Sourceमहेश उवाच। ततःपरं देवनदी वार्त्रघ्नी संगमात्किल । प्रविष्टा भद्रया सार्द्धं सागरं वरुणालयम् १। समुद्रोऽपि तया तावदागम्य प्रियकाम्यया । साभ्रमत्यानुरागेण कृतवान्प्रियमेलनम् २। भद्रा वापि सुभद्रा या वयस्या सा नदी पुरा । सहायमकरोन्मार्गे साक्षात्श्रीरूपधारिणी ३। तयोस्तुसंगमः पुण्यः सागरस्योत्तरे तटे । तत्र तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा मृष्टं वारि ददाति यः ४। नमस्कृत्य वराहाय वारुणं स्थानमाप्नुयात् । प्रविश्य भगवान्विष्णुस्तेन मार्गेण सागरम् ५। जित्वा वै दानवान्सर्वान्देवानां परिपंथिनः । देवो यज्ञवराहश्च संक्षोभ्य मकरालयम् । क्रीडित्वा सुचिरं कालं कर्दमालेन निर्ययौ ६। पार्वत्युवाच। देव यज्ञवराहस्य साभ्रमत्यां प्रवेशनम् । निर्गमं कर्दमालेन ब्रूहि त्वं मम विस्तरात् ७। महादेव उवाच। अंतर्भू क्रीडितमिदं वराहस्य हरेः पुरा । तत्सर्वं कथयिष्यामि शृणु त्वं नगनंदिनि ८। योऽयं वै भगवान्साक्षाद्धृतवान्सूकरं वपुः । देवानां कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं रूपं धृत्वा सुरेश्वरः ९। धृत्वा वै पृथिवीं देवीं निर्गतः कर्दमालयम् । तत्र तीर्थं महज्जातं वराहाख्यं तु सुंदरि १०। तत्र स्नाति नरो यस्तु मुक्तिभाक्स न संशयः । अत्र श्राद्धं प्रकुर्वीत पितॄणां मुक्तिहेतवे । विमुक्तस्तैः समं लोकं प्रयाति सुखदं महत् ११। इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां संहितायामुत्तर। खंडे वाराहतीर्थंनामैकोनसप्तत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः १६९।
maheśa uvāca| tataḥparaṃ devanadī vārtraghnī saṃgamātkila | praviṣṭā bhadrayā sārddhaṃ sāgaraṃ varuṇālayam 1| samudro'pi tayā tāvadāgamya priyakāmyayā | sābhramatyānurāgeṇa kṛtavānpriyamelanam 2| bhadrā vāpi subhadrā yā vayasyā sā nadī purā | sahāyamakaronmārge sākṣātśrīrūpadhāriṇī 3| tayostusaṃgamaḥ puṇyaḥ sāgarasyottare taṭe | tatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā mṛṣṭaṃ vāri dadāti yaḥ 4| namaskṛtya varāhāya vāruṇaṃ sthānamāpnuyāt | praviśya bhagavānviṣṇustena mārgeṇa sāgaram 5| jitvā vai dānavānsarvāndevānāṃ paripaṃthinaḥ | devo yajñavarāhaśca saṃkṣobhya makarālayam | krīḍitvā suciraṃ kālaṃ kardamālena niryayau 6| pārvatyuvāca| deva yajñavarāhasya sābhramatyāṃ praveśanam | nirgamaṃ kardamālena brūhi tvaṃ mama vistarāt 7| mahādeva uvāca| aṃtarbhū krīḍitamidaṃ varāhasya hareḥ purā | tatsarvaṃ kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu tvaṃ naganaṃdini 8| yo'yaṃ vai bhagavānsākṣāddhṛtavānsūkaraṃ vapuḥ | devānāṃ kāryasiddhyarthaṃ rūpaṃ dhṛtvā sureśvaraḥ 9| dhṛtvā vai pṛthivīṃ devīṃ nirgataḥ kardamālayam | tatra tīrthaṃ mahajjātaṃ varāhākhyaṃ tu suṃdari 10| tatra snāti naro yastu muktibhāksa na saṃśayaḥ | atra śrāddhaṃ prakurvīta pitṝṇāṃ muktihetave | vimuktastaiḥ samaṃ lokaṃ prayāti sukhadaṃ mahat 11| iti śrīpādme mahāpurāṇe paṃcapaṃcāśatsāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāmuttara| khaṃḍe vārāhatīrthaṃnāmaikonasaptatyadhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ 169|
English translation
Maheśa said :
1-6. Then the divine river after her confluence with Vārtraghnī, has entered with Bhadrā into the ocean, the abode of Varuṇa . The ocean also, having come there with a desire to do what is dear to her, and due to his affection for Sābhramatī, brought about the pleasing union. Bhadrā who was the friend of Subhadrā formerly, actually taking the form of Śrī, helped her on the way. Their confluence on the northern shore of the ocean is meritorious. A man who, after bathing (there) offers pure water, after saluting Varāha , would obtain Varuṇa’s place. Lord Viṣṇu entered the ocean along that path, vanquished all the demons, the enemies of gods, then the god, Yajñavarāha , agitated the ocean, sported there, for a very long time, and came out through Kardamāla .
Pārvatī said :
7. O god, tell me in detail the entry of Yajñavarāha into the Sābhramatī and his exit through Kardamāla.
Mahādeva said :
8-11. I shall tell you about this sport of Viṣṇu (in the incarnation of) Varāha, in the interior of the earth, done formerly. O daughter of the Himālaya Mountain, listen. He who is actually the lord, took up the form of a boar. Having taken up the form for the success of the mission of the gods, the lord of gods, holding the divine earth (on his tusks), came out of the place (called) Kardama . O beautiful lady, a great holy place has come about there. A man who bathes there, enjoys salvation. There is no doubt about this. A man should perform a śrāddha here for the release of his dead ancestors. Freed with them, he goes to the great world giving happiness.
