English translation
Yajnasitasvarupa asks the gopis to narrate the Ekadashi-vrata ritual for the happiness of Sri Radha and describe its method, rules, and significance.
Shrinaradji says - Mithileshwar! Now listen to the description of the Gopis in the form of Yajna-Sita, the taker of all sins, the bestower of virtue, the purifier of desires, and the abode of good. 1.
To the south is a country known as Ushinara, where Indra did not rain for ten years at a time. The cowherd gopas in that country came with their families and herdsmen to Vrajmandal in fear of drought. O Lord! With the help of Nandaraja, they settled on the beautiful and picturesque banks of the Yamuna in the holy Vrindavan. Gopanganas in the form of Yajnasita were born in their homes to Lord Rama. They all had divine bodies and were adorned with divine youth. Nripesvara. One day she was fascinated by seeing the beautiful Lord Krishna and warmed up near Sriradha with the intention of asking for a fast to please Lord Krishna. 2 - 6.
The gopis said - Divine, lotus-like, Vrishabhanunandini Sriradhe! You tell us something auspicious for the happiness of Lord Krishna. Those who are extremely rare even to the gods, Sreenandanandan, remain under your control. Radhe! You are world-fascinated and well-versed in the meaning of all scriptures. 7 - 8. (Madhurikand chapters 6 to 11)
Sriradhana said, "Dear sisters! May all of you observe Ekadashi fast for the happiness of Lord Krishna. There is no doubt that you will be directly subjugated by him. 9.
The gopis asked - Radhika! Explain the names of the Ekadashis throughout the year. In what spirit should the Ekadashi fast be observed in each month? . 10.
Sri Radha said, "Gopakumariyo! Ekadashi originated in the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month to slay an Asura from the body of Lord Vishnu - mainly his mouth, hence that date is superior to all other dates. Each month has a different Ekadashi. He is the best of all the vows. I am naming the twenty-sixth of that date in the best interest of all of you. (There are twenty-four Ekadashi dates starting from Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. Their names are as follows respectively -) Ijati, Moksha, Safala, Putrada, Shattila, Jaya, Vijaya, Amalaki, Papamochani, Kamada, Varuthini, Mohini, Apra, Nirjala, Yogini, Devshayani, Kamini, Pavitra, Aja, Padma, Indira, Papankusha, Rama and Prabodhini. The two Ekadashi dates are Malmasaki. They both have the same name as Sarvaprada. Thus one who recites the twenty-six names of Ekadashi also reaps the fruits of the year-long fast of Dwadashi (Ekadashi) dates. 11-17 |
Vrajangnao! Now listen to the rules of Ekadashi fasting! A person should eat food at the same time on Dashami and sleep on the ground at night by staying awake. Drink water at the same time as well. Wear dusty clothes and keep your body and mind clean. Then rise in the Brahma-muhurta and bow at the feet of Srihari on Ekadashi. Then take a bath after taking a break from the toilet. The Kuenka stream is the lowest, the stepwell bath is the middle one, the pond and pond bath are considered the best, and the river stream is even better. Thus the best of men who take a bath and fast should renounce anger and greed and not speak to lowly and hypocritical men on that day. Even those who are untruthful, Brahmanic blasphemers, perverts, adulterers, adulterers, adulterers, perverts, and transgressors should not be spoken of by a fasting man. Worship Lord Keshav in the temple and make offerings there and offer lamps with a devotional heart. Listen to stories from Brahmins, give them dakshina, keep them awake at night, and sing and chant verses related to Krishna. To observe Vaishnavavrat (Ekadashi), on Dashami, give up ten things - bronze vessels, meat, lentils, coconuts, chickpeas, greens, honey, parched grains, re-eating, and sex. These eleven things should be discarded on Ekadashi - gambling, sleep, drinking, toothache, blasphemy, gossip, theft, violence, lust, anger, and untruthful speech. Do not consume bronchi, meat, honey, oil, fad, piddi, sattika rice and lentils, etc., on Dwadashi. Perform the Uttama Ekadashivrata ritual with this method. 18-30 |
Shri Radha said - If Dashami is observed till fifty-five hours (Danda) then that Ekadashi is wasted. Then one should fast only on Dwadashi. The entire Ekadashi tithi is liable to be discarded if the darshan is received from Dashami for even a moment, just as a drop of wine washes away the urn filled with Ganga water. If Ekadashi extends for some time even on the day of Dwadashi, then Ekadashi on the second day is worth fasting. On the first Ekadashi, one should not fast during that fast. 32-34 |
The Vrajanganao. Now I am telling you the fruits of this Ekadashi fast, from the mere listening of which the Vajpayya Yajna bears fruit. The one who feeds eighty-eight thousand Brahmins receives the same lotus as the one who observes the Ekadashi fast. One who donates all the Vasundhara, including the sea and the forests, gets a thousand times as much merit as he gets from performing the great fast ritual of Ekadashi. The Ekadashi fast is the best means for the salvation of those who are immersed in the ocean of sinful world. A person who observes the Ekadashi fast before awakening at night does not see the radiant form of Yamaraja, even if it involves hundreds of sins. One who worships Sriharika with devotion on Dwadashi with Tulasi leaves does not indulge in sin like a lotus leaf with water. Even thousands of Ashvamedha and hundreds of Rajasuya Yajnas cannot equal the sixteenth art of fasting on Ekadashi. A person who observes the Ekadashi fast saves ten generations of the matrilineal lineage, ten generations of the paternal lineage, and ten generations of the wife's lineage. Just as Shukupaksha is Ekadashi, so is Krishna's; both bear the same fruit. Black, like a milch cow, is white - both have the same milk. The Gopis If the sins of a hundred births, as great as those of Meru and Mandrachala, are on one side and the fast of the same Ekadashi on the other, she incinerates those sins of Parvatopam in the same manner as a spark of fire burns a heap of cotton. 35-44 | (Madhurikand Chapter 6 to 11)
Goopanganau Ritually or unceremoniously, if even a little bit is donated to Dwadashi, it becomes as great as Mount Meru. One who hears the story of Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi gets the fruits of the donation of the earth consisting of seven islands. Even if a person accumulates the great virtue of darshan of God Gadadhara by bathing in Shankhodhar Tirtha, he cannot match the sixteenth art of fasting on Punya Ekadashi. In Prabhas, Kurukshetra, Kedar, Badarikasrama, Kashi, and Sukara Kshetra, donations made by humans on the occasion of lunar eclipses, solar eclipses, and four lakh Sankrantis are also not equal to the sixteenth art of fasting on Ekadashi. The Gopis The Ekadashi Tithi is the best among the fasts, just as Shesh among the Nagas, Garuda among the birds, Vishnu among the gods, Brahmana among the years, Pipal among the trees, and Tulasidal among the leaves. A person who performs intense penance for ten thousand years reaps the same fruits as a person who observes the Ekadashi fast. Vrajangnao! Thus I have described to you the Tablets of the Eleven. Now you must begin this fast at once. Tell me, what else do you want to hear? . 45-53 |
Thus, the eighth chapter titled 'Upakhyan and Ekadashi-Mahatmya of Yajnasitas' was completed in the Shrinarada Bahulashva-Samvad under Madhuryakanda in the Srigarghasamhita. 8.
