Joined with the understanding of evenness, the wise, having become knowers, casting off the fruit born of action, the gaining of a desired or undesired body, are freed from the bondage of birth, freed while still living from the bondage that is birth itself, and go to the abode, the supreme step of Viṣṇu, named liberation, free of all ill. Or else, from 'seek refuge in the understanding' (Gītā 2.49) onward, the understanding shown is the one marked by the vision of the supreme reality, standing like the flood of water spreading on every side, born of the purity of being produced by the yoga of action, since it is heard to be directly the cause of the casting-off of merit and demerit.
