नवमो’ध्यायः श्री-व्यास उवाच— अथ सꣳस्कृते हुतवहे’मल-धीर् अभिवाह्य सम्यग् अभिपूज्य हरिम् । जुहुयात् सिताघृत-युतेन पयः परिसाधितेन सित-दीधितिना ॥१॥ अष्टोत्तरꣳ सहस्रꣳ समाप्य होमꣳ पुनर् बलिꣳ दद्यात् । राशिष्व् अधिनाथेभ्यो नक्षत्रेभ्यस् ततश् च करणेभ्यः ॥२॥ सम्पाद्य पानीय-सुधाꣳ समर्प्य दत्त्वाम्भ उदास्य मुखार्चिर् आस्ये नैवेद्यम् उद्धृत्य निवेद्य विष्वक् सेनाय पृथ्वीम् उपलिप्य भूयः ॥३॥ गण्डूष-दन्त-धवनाचमनास्य-हस्त- मृज्यानुलेपमुखवासकमाल्य-भूषाः । ताम्बूलम् अप्य् अभिसमर्प्य सुवाद्य-नृत्य- गीतैः सुतृप्तम् अभिपूजयतात् पुनर् एव ॥४॥ गन्धादिभिः सपरिवारम् अथार्घम् अस्मै दत्त्वा विधाय कुसुमाञ्जलिम् आदरेण । स्तुत्वा प्रणम्य शिरसा चुलुकोदकेन स्वात्मानम् अर्पयतु तच् चरणाब्ज-मूले ॥५॥ इति पूर्वꣳ प्राण-बुद्धि-देह-धर्माधिकारतः । जाग्रत्-स्वप्न-सुषुप्त्य्-आख्यावस्थासु मनसा वाचा ॥६॥ कर्मणा हस्ताभ्याꣳ पद्भ्याम् उदरेण शिश्ना यत् स्मृतम् । यद् उक्तꣳ यत् कृतꣳ तत् सर्वꣳ ब्रह्मार्पणꣳ भवतु स्वाहा ॥७॥ माꣳ मदीयꣳ च सकलꣳ हरये’हꣳ समर्पये । ओꣳ तत् सदिति सम्प्रोक्तो मन्त्रः स्वात्मार्पणे शुभः ॥८॥ अनुस्मरन् कलशगम् अच्युतꣳ जपेत् सहस्रकꣳ मनुम् अथ साष्टकꣳ बुधः । वपुष्य् अथो दितिजाजितः समावृतीर् विलाप्य तास् तद् अपि नयेत् सुधात्मताम् ॥९॥ ध्वज-तोरण-दिक्-कलशादि-गताम् अपि मण्डप-मण्डल-कुण्ड-गताम् । अभियोज्य चितिꣳ कलशे कुसुमैः परिपूज्य जपेत् पुनर् अष्टशतम् ॥१०॥ अथ शिष्य उपोषितः प्रभाते कृत-नैत्यः सुसिताम्बरः सुवेशः । धरणी-धन-धान्य-गोकुलैर् धिनुयाद् विप्र-वरान् हरेः प्रसत्त्यैः ॥११॥ भूयः प्रतर्प्य प्रणिपत्य देशिकꣳ तस्मै परस्मै पुरुषाय देहिने । ताꣳ वित्त-शाठ्यꣳ परिहृत्य दक्षिणाꣳ दत्त्वा तनुꣳ स्वाꣳ च समर्पयेत् सुधीः ॥१२॥ अथाभिषेक-मण्डपे सुखोपविष्टम् आसने । गुरुर् विशोधयेद् अमुꣳ पुरेव शोषणादिभिः ॥१३॥ पीठ-न्यासावसानꣳ वपुषि विमल-धीर् न्यस्य तस्यासिकाया मन्त्रेणाभ्यर्च्य दूर्वाक्षत-कुसुम-युताꣳ रोचनाꣳ के निधाय । आशीर्वादैर् द्विजानाꣳ विशद-पटु-रवैर् गीत-वादित्र-घोषैर् माङ्गल्यैर् आनयत्तꣳ कलशम् अभिवृतस् तत्-समीपꣳ प्रतीतः ॥१४॥ तेनाभिलीन-मणि-मन्त्र-महौषधेन धाम्ना पेरण परमामृत-रूप-भाजा । सम्पूरयन् वपुर् अमुष्य ततो वितन्वन् तत्-सामरस्यमभिषेचयताद् यथावत् ॥१५॥ क्षाद्यैर् आन्तैर् वर्णैर् अभिपूर्ण-तनुस् त्रिर् उक्त-मन्त्रान्तैः । परिहित-सिततर-वमन-द्वितीयो वाचꣳयमः समाचान्तः ॥१६॥ बहुशः प्रणम्य देशक-नामानꣳ हरिम् अथोपसङ्गम्य । तद्-दक्षिणत उपास्ताम् अभिमुखम् एकाग्र-मानसः शिष्यः ॥१७॥ न्यासैर् यथाविधि तम् अच्युत-साद्विधाय गद्न्हाक्षतादिभिर् अलङ्कृत-वर्ष्मणो’स्य । ऋष्य्-आदि-युक्तम् अथ मन्त्र-वरꣳ यथावद् ब्रूयात् त्रिशो गुरुर् अनर्घ्यम् अवाम-करेण ॥१८॥ गुरुणा विधिवत् प्रसादितꣳ मनुम् अष्टोर्ध्व-शतꣳ प्रजप्य भूयः । अभिवाद्य ततः शृणोतु सम्यक् समयान् भक्ति-भरेण नम्र-मूर्तिः ॥१९॥ दत्त्वा शिष्याय मनुꣳ न्यस्याथ गुरुः कृतात्म-यजन-विधिः । अष्टोत्तरꣳ सहस्रꣳ स्व-शक्तिहान्य-नवाप्तये जप्यात् ॥२०॥ कुम्भादिकꣳ च सकलꣳ गुरवे समर्प्य सम्भोजयेद् द्विज-वरान् अपि भोज्य-जातैः । कुर्वन्त्य्ह् अनेन विधिना य इहाभिषेकꣳ ते सम्पदाꣳ निलयनꣳ हि त एव धन्याः ॥२१॥ सङ्क्षिप्य किꣳचिद् उदिता दीक्षा सꣳस्मरणाय हि विशद-धियाम् । एताꣳ प्रविश्य मन्त्री सर्वान् जपेज् जुहोतु यजेच् च मनून् ॥२२॥ इति श्री-नारद-पञ्चरात्रे ज्ञानामृत-सारे तृतीय-रात्रे नवमो’ध्यायः ॥९॥ …

navamo’dhyāyaḥ śrī-vyāsa uvāca— atha saṁskṛte hutavahe’mala-dhīr abhivāhya samyag abhipūjya harim | juhuyāt sitāghṛta-yutena payaḥ parisādhitena sita-dīdhitinā ||1|| aṣṭottaraṁ sahasraṁ samāpya homaṁ punar baliṁ dadyāt | rāśiṣv adhināthebhyo nakṣatrebhyas tataś ca karaṇebhyaḥ ||2|| sampādya pānīya-sudhāṁ samarpya dattvāmbha udāsya mukhārcir āsye naivedyam uddhṛtya nivedya viṣvak senāya pṛthvīm upalipya bhūyaḥ ||3|| gaṇḍūṣa-danta-dhavanācamanāsya-hasta- mṛjyānulepamukhavāsakamālya-bhūṣāḥ | tāmbūlam apy abhisamarpya suvādya-nṛtya- gītaiḥ sutṛptam abhipūjayatāt punar eva ||4|| gandhādibhiḥ saparivāram athārgham asmai dattvā vidhāya kusumāñjalim ādareṇa | stutvā praṇamya śirasā culukodakena svātmānam arpayatu tac caraṇābja-mūle ||5|| iti pūrvaṁ prāṇa-buddhi-deha-dharmādhikārataḥ | jāgrat-svapna-suṣupty-ākhyāvasthāsu manasā vācā ||6|| karmaṇā hastābhyāṁ padbhyām udareṇa śiśnā yat smṛtam | yad uktaṁ yat kṛtaṁ tat sarvaṁ brahmārpaṇaṁ bhavatu svāhā ||7|| māṁ madīyaṁ ca sakalaṁ haraye’haṁ samarpaye | oṁ tat saditi samprokto mantraḥ svātmārpaṇe śubhaḥ ||8|| anusmaran kalaśagam acyutaṁ japet sahasrakaṁ manum atha sāṣṭakaṁ budhaḥ | vapuṣy atho ditijājitaḥ samāvṛtīr vilāpya tās tad api nayet sudhātmatām ||9|| dhvaja-toraṇa-dik-kalaśādi-gatām api maṇḍapa-maṇḍala-kuṇḍa-gatām | abhiyojya citiṁ kalaśe kusumaiḥ paripūjya japet punar aṣṭaśatam ||10|| atha śiṣya upoṣitaḥ prabhāte kṛta-naityaḥ susitāmbaraḥ suveśaḥ | dharaṇī-dhana-dhānya-gokulair dhinuyād vipra-varān hareḥ prasattyaiḥ ||11|| bhūyaḥ pratarpya praṇipatya deśikaṁ tasmai parasmai puruṣāya dehine | tāṁ vitta-śāṭhyaṁ parihṛtya dakṣiṇāṁ dattvā tanuṁ svāṁ ca samarpayet sudhīḥ ||12|| athābhiṣeka-maṇḍape sukhopaviṣṭam āsane | gurur viśodhayed amuṁ pureva śoṣaṇādibhiḥ ||13|| pīṭha-nyāsāvasānaṁ vapuṣi vimala-dhīr nyasya tasyāsikāyā mantreṇābhyarcya dūrvākṣata-kusuma-yutāṁ rocanāṁ ke nidhāya | āśīrvādair dvijānāṁ viśada-paṭu-ravair gīta-vāditra-ghoṣair māṅgalyair ānayattaṁ kalaśam abhivṛtas tat-samīpaṁ pratītaḥ ||14|| tenābhilīna-maṇi-mantra-mahauṣadhena dhāmnā peraṇa paramāmṛta-rūpa-bhājā | sampūrayan vapur amuṣya tato vitanvan tat-sāmarasyamabhiṣecayatād yathāvat ||15|| kṣādyair āntair varṇair abhipūrṇa-tanus trir ukta-mantrāntaiḥ | parihita-sitatara-vamana-dvitīyo vācaṁyamaḥ samācāntaḥ ||16|| bahuśaḥ praṇamya deśaka-nāmānaṁ harim athopasaṅgamya | tad-dakṣiṇata upāstām abhimukham ekāgra-mānasaḥ śiṣyaḥ ||17|| nyāsair yathāvidhi tam acyuta-sādvidhāya gadnhākṣatādibhir alaṅkṛta-varṣmaṇo’sya | ṛṣy-ādi-yuktam atha mantra-varaṁ yathāvad brūyāt triśo gurur anarghyam avāma-kareṇa ||18|| guruṇā vidhivat prasāditaṁ manum aṣṭordhva-śataṁ prajapya bhūyaḥ | abhivādya tataḥ śṛṇotu samyak samayān bhakti-bhareṇa namra-mūrtiḥ ||19|| dattvā śiṣyāya manuṁ nyasyātha guruḥ kṛtātma-yajana-vidhiḥ | aṣṭottaraṁ sahasraṁ sva-śaktihānya-navāptaye japyāt ||20|| kumbhādikaṁ ca sakalaṁ gurave samarpya sambhojayed dvija-varān api bhojya-jātaiḥ | kurvantyh anena vidhinā ya ihābhiṣekaṁ te sampadāṁ nilayanaṁ hi ta eva dhanyāḥ ||21|| saṅkṣipya kiṁcid uditā dīkṣā saṁsmaraṇāya hi viśada-dhiyām | etāṁ praviśya mantrī sarvān japej juhotu yajec ca manūn ||22|| iti śrī-nārada-pañcarātre jñānāmṛta-sāre tṛtīya-rātre navamo’dhyāyaḥ ||9|| …

English translation

CHAPTER IX ON THE METHOD OF OFFERING HOMAS

(The cating of clarified butter etc., into the sacred fire as an offering to the Gods).

Vyasa Deva said :—Then, on the consecrated Fire the clear minded devotee should perform with great eclat amindst the sounding of musical instruments and drums, the Homa ceremony (cast clarified butter etc., into the secred fire as a0 offering to the Gods) with milk, sugar, and other materials. (1)

Thus he should finish one thousand and eight homas; next he should again offer articles of worship (at this point sacrifice (Bali) isto be offered (according to the text in the origin well offer articles to the asterism ruled by vasigtha and to ‘‘Karanas” (religious actions), or to eleventh as combinations, Babakarana, etc. (2)

Plaster the plot of ground, whitewash proper places, and pour water towards the sou offer articles (naivedyam) to Sri Krsna and again dung. (3)

Note :— Or Stretch the hands straigh _and then power water etc. as before.

The water in the palm of the hand, wash teeth and make jeaman and wash mouth, hands and utter the vedic mantras for the above purposed. Then offer sandalpaste, napkin, garlands, ornaments, betels etc., and perform singing dancing etc, and -again worship as before. (4)

Next offer arghyas (Doob grass with ataP rice) with scents and flowers to Him and His family, give with great regards and love handrals of flowers to. Him, chant stotras and hymns and bow down with one’s head on the ground. Next offer one’s soul to His lotus feet in the shape of water in-one’s palm of hand. (5)

The Devotee is to think thus ;—I am offering my soul and all other things that are mine, all to Sri Hari, uttering the auspicious mantra “‘Om tat sat”, the famous one in surrendering one’s own self to the Lord. (8)

Remembering in the water jar the presence of Sri Krsna and muttering one’s mantra one thousand times, consider one’s soul in one’s body and thus make ones self as worthy of enjoying nectar (i.e. immortality). (9)

Fixing the flag, placing the waterpitcher outside and kundala and collecting other articles of the mandala in the worship hall, Tepeat again the seed mantra one hundred and eight times. (10)

Next the devotee disciple at the end of his fasting should do all the daily duties in the morning, put up nice white clothes and Ornaments, and then give land, wealth and paddy and cows in sufficient quantities and numbers to the Brahmanas devoted to Hari with humble words and please them. (11)

Circumambulating and bowing down to the spiritual teacher and thinking the divine Presence there in his body, of the Highest Deity, the intelligent devotee should avoid all shorts of hypocriey and niggardliness and offer dakginas (gifts) and then offer his own Persons to the Guru. (12)

Sitting in the posture of sukhasana in a holy place in the Sacrificial hall where the holy water is kept for initiation, the guru. Or spiritual teacher should purify him (the disciple) by the process of Sosana (i.e. drying him or withering him up #e. by physical, meatal fastings from improper food). (13).

After assigning the respective places of the Deity in the body

blessings of the Brahmanas and amidst music and singing and auspicious shewing of lights (arati) make Him come close to the already located ghata (i.e. water-jar). (14)

Chanting manimantras (incantations invoking the Deity in gems) and placing the chief plants (mahausadhis) and thus invoking the presence of the Highest Person from the Highest abode in that waterpitcher, the devotee should duly install Him there. (15)

When the water jar has been filled with water duly, reciting the letter ksa cf the mantra down to the last word, the devotee wearing white garments should make acamana (sip water) seeond time, keeping silent. (16)

Bowing down to the spiritual priest, as if to Sri Hari and worshipping Him the disciple now aware of the mantra should be

present and sit on his right side before the Guru. (17) y the

The disciple is to dedicate all the things ¢-8-» the water jar etc., to the Guru and then he should feed the best Bramanas with nice entertainments, food and drink. For whoever in this world performs the abhiseka Kriya duly according to proper rites and ceremonies, becomes blessed and the repository of all

wealth. (21)

For the caution and remembering of the devotees of odd intellect, these rules are expressed in brief. From this the devotees, knowing the mantras, will be entitled to surrender one’s self (4tmasamarpana) be initiated in mantras and make japam, homa, puja of all the mantras. (22)
