अष्टमो’ध्यायः व्यास उवाच— हरि-हव्य-वाट्-तरणिज-क्षपाचराप्य् अतिवायुसोम-शिव-शेष-पद्मजान् । प्रयजेत् स्वदिक्ष्व् अमल-धीः स्वजात्य् अधी- श्वरहेति-पत्र-परिवार-सꣳयुतान् ॥१॥ कपिश-कपिल-नील-श्यामल-श्वेत-धूम्रा- मल-सित-शुचि-रक्ता वर्णतो वासवाद्याः । कर-कमल-विराजत्-स्वायुधा दिव्य-वेशा विविध-मणि-गणो’स्र-प्रस्फुरद्-भूषणाढ्याः ॥२॥ दम्भोलि-शक्त्य्-अभिध-दण्ड-कृपाण-पाश- चण्डाङ्कुशाह्वय-गदा-त्रिशिखारि-पद्माः । अर्च्या बहिर् निज-सुलक्षित-मौलि-युक्ताः स्व-स्वायुध-भय-समुद्यत-पाणि-पद्मः ॥३॥ कनक-रजत-तोयदाभ्र-चम्पा- रुणहिम-नील-जवा-प्रवाल-भासः क्रमतः । क्रमत इति रुचा तु वज्र-पूर्वा- रुचिर-विलेपन-वस्त्र-माल्य-भूषाः ॥४॥ कथितम् आवृति-सप्तकम् अच्युता- र्चन-विधाव् इति सर्व-सुखावहम् । प्रयताद् अथवाङ्ग-पुरन्दरा- शनि-मुखैस् त्रितयावरणꣳ त्व् इदम् ॥५॥ इत्य् अर्चयित्वा जल-गन्ध-पुष्पैः कृष्णाष्टकेनाप्य् अथ कृष्ण-पूजाम् । कुर्याद् बुधस् तानि समाह्वयानि वक्ष्यामि तादादि-नमो’न्तिकानि ॥६॥ श्री-कृष्णो वासुदेवश् च नारायण-समाह्वयः । देवकी-नन्दनो यदु-श्रेष्ठो वार्ष्णेय इत्य् अपि ॥७॥ असुरान्तक-शब्दान्ते भारहारीति सप्तमः । धर्म-सꣳस्थापकश् चाष्टौ चतुर्थ्य्-अन्ताः क्रमाद् इमे ॥८॥ एभिर् एवाथवा पूजा कर्तव्या कꣳस-वैरिणः । सꣳसार-सागरोत्तीर्त्यै सर्व-कामाप्तये बुधैः ॥९॥ साराङ्गारे घृत-विलुलितैर् जर्जरै सꣳविकीर्णैर् गुग्गुल्वाद्यैर् घन-परिमलैर् धूपम् आपाद्य मन्त्री । दद्यान् नीचैर् दनुज-मथनायापरेणाथ दोष्णा घण्टाꣳ गन्धाक्षत-कुसुमकैर् अर्चिताꣳ वादयानः ॥१०॥ तद्वद् दीपꣳ सुरभि-घृत-सꣳसिक्त-कर्पूर-वर्त्या दीप्तꣳ दृष्ट्याद्य्-अतिविशदधीः पद्म-पर्यन्तम् उच्चैः । दत्त्वा पुष्पाञ्जलिम् अप् च इ विधायार्पयित्वा च पाद्यꣳ साचामꣳ कल्पयतु विपुल-स्वर्ण-पात्रे निवेद्य ॥११॥ सुरभितरेण दुग्ध-हविषा सुशृतेन सिता- समुपदेशकै रुचिर-हृद्य्-अविचित्र-रसैः । दधि-नव-नीत-नूतन-सितोपल-पूप-पुलि- घृत-गुड-नारिकेल-कदली-फल-पुष्प-रसैः ॥१२॥ अस्त्रोक्षितꣳ तद्-अरि-मुद्रिकयाभिरक्ष्य वायव्यतीयपरिशोषितमग्निदोष्णा । सन्दह्य वाम-कर-सौधरसाभिपूर्णꣳ मन्त्रामृतीकृतम् अथाभिमृषन् प्रजप्यात् ॥१३॥ मनुम् अष्टशः सुरभि-मुद्रिकया परिपूर्णम् अर्चयतु गन्ध-मुखैः । हरिम् अर्चयेद् अथ कृत-प्रसवाञ्जलिर् आस्यतो’स्य प्रसरेच् च महः ॥१४॥ वीतिहोत्रदयितान्तम् उच्चरन् मूल-मन्त्रम् अथ निक्षिपेज् जलम् । अर्पयेत् तद् अमृतात्मकꣳ हविर् दोर्-युजा सुकुसुमꣳ समुद्धरन् ॥१५॥ निवेदयामि भगवते जुषाणेदꣳ हविर् हरे । निवेद्यार्पणमन्त्रो’यꣳ सर्वार्चासु निजाख्यया ॥१६॥ ग्रास-मुद्राꣳ वाम-दोष्णा विकचोत्पल-सन्निभाम् । प्रदर्शयेद् दक्षिणेन प्राणादीनाꣳ च दर्शयेत् ॥१७॥ स्पृशेत् कनिष्ठोपकनिष्ठे द्वे अङ्गुष्ठ-मूर्ध्ना प्रथमेह मुद्रा । तथापरा तर्जनि-मध्यमे स्याद् अनामिक-मध्यमिके च मध्या ॥१८॥ अनामिक-तर्जनि-मध्यमाः स्यात् तद्वच् चतुर्थी-स-कनिष्ठिकास् तः । स्यात् पञ्चमी तद्वद् इति प्रदिष्टा प्राणादि-मुद्रा निज-मन्त्र-युक्ताः ॥१९॥ प्राणापान-व्यानोदान- समानाः क्रमाच् चतुर्थ्य्-अन्ताः । ताराधारा वध्वा चेद्धाः कृष्णाध्वनस् त्व् इमे मनवः ॥२०॥ ततो निवेद्य मुद्रिकाꣳ प्रधानया कर-द्वये । स्पृशन्न् अनामिकाꣳ निजꣳ मनुꣳ जपन प्रदर्शयेत् ॥२१॥ नन्दजो’म्बु-मनु-बिन्दु-युङ् नतिः पार्श्व-रा-मरुद्-अवात्मने नि च । रुद्ध-ङे-युत-निवेद्यम् आत्म-भूर् मास-पार्श्वम् अनिलस् तथा’मि-युक् ॥२२॥ मण्डलम् अभितो मन्त्री बीजाङ्कुर-भाजनानि विन्यस्य । पिष्टमयान् अपि दीपान् घृत-पूर्णान् विन्यसेत् सुदीप्त-शिखान् ॥२३॥ इति श्री-नारद-पञ्चरात्रे ज्ञानामृत-सारे तृतीय-रात्रे अष्टमो’ध्यायः ॥८॥ …

aṣṭamo’dhyāyaḥ vyāsa uvāca— hari-havya-vāṭ-taraṇija-kṣapācarāpy ativāyusoma-śiva-śeṣa-padmajān | prayajet svadikṣv amala-dhīḥ svajāty adhī- śvaraheti-patra-parivāra-saṁyutān ||1|| kapiśa-kapila-nīla-śyāmala-śveta-dhūmrā- mala-sita-śuci-raktā varṇato vāsavādyāḥ | kara-kamala-virājat-svāyudhā divya-veśā vividha-maṇi-gaṇo’sra-prasphurad-bhūṣaṇāḍhyāḥ ||2|| dambholi-śakty-abhidha-daṇḍa-kṛpāṇa-pāśa- caṇḍāṅkuśāhvaya-gadā-triśikhāri-padmāḥ | arcyā bahir nija-sulakṣita-mauli-yuktāḥ sva-svāyudha-bhaya-samudyata-pāṇi-padmaḥ ||3|| kanaka-rajata-toyadābhra-campā- ruṇahima-nīla-javā-pravāla-bhāsaḥ kramataḥ | kramata iti rucā tu vajra-pūrvā- rucira-vilepana-vastra-mālya-bhūṣāḥ ||4|| kathitam āvṛti-saptakam acyutā- rcana-vidhāv iti sarva-sukhāvaham | prayatād athavāṅga-purandarā- śani-mukhais tritayāvaraṇaṁ tv idam ||5|| ity arcayitvā jala-gandha-puṣpaiḥ kṛṣṇāṣṭakenāpy atha kṛṣṇa-pūjām | kuryād budhas tāni samāhvayāni vakṣyāmi tādādi-namo’ntikāni ||6|| śrī-kṛṣṇo vāsudevaś ca nārāyaṇa-samāhvayaḥ | devakī-nandano yadu-śreṣṭho vārṣṇeya ity api ||7|| asurāntaka-śabdānte bhārahārīti saptamaḥ | dharma-saṁsthāpakaś cāṣṭau caturthy-antāḥ kramād ime ||8|| ebhir evāthavā pūjā kartavyā kaṁsa-vairiṇaḥ | saṁsāra-sāgarottīrtyai sarva-kāmāptaye budhaiḥ ||9|| sārāṅgāre ghṛta-vilulitair jarjarai saṁvikīrṇair guggulvādyair ghana-parimalair dhūpam āpādya mantrī | dadyān nīcair danuja-mathanāyāpareṇātha doṣṇā ghaṇṭāṁ gandhākṣata-kusumakair arcitāṁ vādayānaḥ ||10|| tadvad dīpaṁ surabhi-ghṛta-saṁsikta-karpūra-vartyā dīptaṁ dṛṣṭyādy-ativiśadadhīḥ padma-paryantam uccaiḥ | dattvā puṣpāñjalim ap ca i vidhāyārpayitvā ca pādyaṁ sācāmaṁ kalpayatu vipula-svarṇa-pātre nivedya ||11|| surabhitareṇa dugdha-haviṣā suśṛtena sitā- samupadeśakai rucira-hṛdy-avicitra-rasaiḥ | dadhi-nava-nīta-nūtana-sitopala-pūpa-puli- ghṛta-guḍa-nārikela-kadalī-phala-puṣpa-rasaiḥ ||12|| astrokṣitaṁ tad-ari-mudrikayābhirakṣya vāyavyatīyapariśoṣitamagnidoṣṇā | sandahya vāma-kara-saudharasābhipūrṇaṁ mantrāmṛtīkṛtam athābhimṛṣan prajapyāt ||13|| manum aṣṭaśaḥ surabhi-mudrikayā paripūrṇam arcayatu gandha-mukhaiḥ | harim arcayed atha kṛta-prasavāñjalir āsyato’sya prasarec ca mahaḥ ||14|| vītihotradayitāntam uccaran mūla-mantram atha nikṣipej jalam | arpayet tad amṛtātmakaṁ havir dor-yujā sukusumaṁ samuddharan ||15|| nivedayāmi bhagavate juṣāṇedaṁ havir hare | nivedyārpaṇamantro’yaṁ sarvārcāsu nijākhyayā ||16|| grāsa-mudrāṁ vāma-doṣṇā vikacotpala-sannibhām | pradarśayed dakṣiṇena prāṇādīnāṁ ca darśayet ||17|| spṛśet kaniṣṭhopakaniṣṭhe dve aṅguṣṭha-mūrdhnā prathameha mudrā | tathāparā tarjani-madhyame syād anāmika-madhyamike ca madhyā ||18|| anāmika-tarjani-madhyamāḥ syāt tadvac caturthī-sa-kaniṣṭhikās taḥ | syāt pañcamī tadvad iti pradiṣṭā prāṇādi-mudrā nija-mantra-yuktāḥ ||19|| prāṇāpāna-vyānodāna- samānāḥ kramāc caturthy-antāḥ | tārādhārā vadhvā ceddhāḥ kṛṣṇādhvanas tv ime manavaḥ ||20|| tato nivedya mudrikāṁ pradhānayā kara-dvaye | spṛśann anāmikāṁ nijaṁ manuṁ japana pradarśayet ||21|| nandajo’mbu-manu-bindu-yuṅ natiḥ pārśva-rā-marud-avātmane ni ca | ruddha-ṅe-yuta-nivedyam ātma-bhūr māsa-pārśvam anilas tathā’mi-yuk ||22|| maṇḍalam abhito mantrī bījāṅkura-bhājanāni vinyasya | piṣṭamayān api dīpān ghṛta-pūrṇān vinyaset sudīpta-śikhān ||23|| iti śrī-nārada-pañcarātre jñānāmṛta-sāre tṛtīya-rātre aṣṭamo’dhyāyaḥ ||8|| …

English translation

CHAPTER VIII ON WORSHIP OR PUJA

Vyasa said :—The pure-minded devotee is to worship on his four sides Sti Hari, Fire (Agni), Taranjija (one born of the Sun; the Sun), Ksapata (night wanderer ? stars, goblins), ocean, Mi (air), the Moon, Siva, Sesa, (the thousand headed serpent) an Padmaja (Laksmi) as the lords of their respective circles and attendants, with their whole host of respective weapons (Hetipatra arrows and their feathers, or Knives) and vehicles. (1)

Note :—To wo

‘ship any Deva is to become that Deva. So worshipper is to use

justly the arms and weapons.

The above Devatas are of tawny, reddish, blue, dark blue (green), white, Smoky, whitish, pure and resplendent with red colours (2) holding weapons in their hands, dressed with divine cloths and deckeq with various luminous gems and ornaments and thus they are worshipped. (2)

The Devis are to be

meditated as holding in their hands weapons as

Vajra (thuncerbolt), Sakti, danda (spears), scimitar, noose, furious goad, semi-club, trisikharipatha; their heads as marked outside with various good omens and their hands raised as if to impart the idea ‘“‘do not fear” to the devotees. Thus they are two be Worshipped. Hence a devotee has got no fear. (3)

The several] gods and goddesses are of wonderful colours like gold, silver, clouds, champa flower, Tising sun, dew, blue, of java flower, and like Prabala (coral, fed lotus) 3 with sandalpastes ‘anointed oyer their bodies, wearing nice clothings and garlands of flowers, thus defying Cupid or the god of Love, (4)

i The devotee learned in the mantras is to burn the fragrant incense dhiz and googgool etc., and, with full devotion tO chant the bell and offer scents, rice., etc to Sri Krsna and with bis eyes directed to bottom and up is to offer the nforesaid dbup- (10)

Then he is to see similarly the deepa (light) mixed with ghee or Karpara (camphor) ; the pure minded devotee is to shew lights from upward to downward up to feet and then offer palmfu flowers, padya. Acamaniya, and food ina ance in golden plates. (11)

Pure milk, ghee, sugar etc., variegated ornaments and fresh butter, cakes and gur, coconut, plantains and honey. &t> are to be offered to Him. (12)

Shew then Astra mudra and Samraksana mudra (a certain posture of hands and fingers) over it. Have all adverse influences dried up by the warmth of the hand and the air- Fill it with the nectar juice and placing hands and fingers over the articles offered, repeat amrtikarana mantra and make japam. (13)

Repeating the mila mantra, throw water and offer after taking up the ghee that has been converted into amrta by means of the flowers in the hand. (15)

Offer all the articles of worship to Sri Krsna, taking His own

natue—that the devotee is to offer all these article with ghee to Sr{ Bhagavan. (16)

Shewing grasa mudra (like a full blewn Jotus) by means of the left hand, shew by means of the right hand Prana mudra etc., (ie. Pranaya Svaha etc.} (17)

First shew this mudra to head by means of the little and ring

fingers with thumb united. Then ‘shew madhya mudra by fore, middle, ring with middle finger united. (18)

Joining thumb with ting, fare, middle and little fingers, one

ought to perform Prana mudra etc., todether with one’s own mantra, (19)

Utter Svaha (as if fastening Sri Radha) and the words | Prana, Apana, Vyana, Samana, Udana etc., in their dative cases and so form the mantras following; as it were, the path cf Sri Krsna. (20)

"Next shew the principal mudra. with one’s hand and repcat ™mantram (i.e. make japam) touching the ring finger (nameless finger), (21)

The devotee knowing all the details of Pooja (worship), mandalam (mantra figure to be-drown) and situated therein should arrange and draw the figure with leaves coming out of seed and then arrange for lamps (lights) burniog with full flame, having

sufficient ghee and with all ingredients for the wick and provided with cakes,

Offer water and bow and meditate that offerin

on one’s left side, belly,
