त्रयोदशो ऽध्यायः श्री-शुक उवाच— स्तोत्रान्तरे च काले च किꣳ रहस्यꣳ बभूव ह । तन् मे कथय भद्रꣳ ते भगवन् भगवद्-वचः ॥१॥ श्री-व्यास उवाच— स्तोत्रान्तरे च काले च गन्धर्वश् चोपवर्हणः । उवाच ब्रह्म-सꣳसदि भगवन्तꣳ सनातनम् ॥२॥ सर्वैर् देवैर् अहꣳ शप्तश् चाधुना देव-हेतुना । देवानाम् अग्नि-पुञ्जश् च प्रदीप्तश् च सुमेरुवत् ॥३॥ अधुना च त्वयि गते भस्मासान् माꣳ करिष्यति । अतो रक्ष जगन्नाथ माꣳ समुद्धर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥४॥ त्वद्-अꣳश-शूकरेणैव धरोद्धारः कृतः पुरा । हिरण्याख्यꣳ महा-दैत्यꣳ निहत्य चावलीलया ॥५॥ पाद्म-पद्मार्चित-पदे पद्मे ते शरणागतम् । माम् अनाथꣳ भयाक्रान्तꣳ रक्ष रक्ष सुरानलात् ॥६॥ गन्धर्वस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य जगद्-ईश्वरः । उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा ब्रह्मेशो ब्रह्म-सꣳसदि ॥७॥ अथ गन्धर्व-मोक्षणम् श्री-भगवान् उवाच— गन्धर्व-राज-प्रवर स्थिरो भव भयꣳ त्यज । शुभाश्रयस्य भक्तस्य भयꣳ किꣳ ते मयि स्थिते ॥८॥ सर्वेभ्यो ऽपि भयꣳ नास्ति मद्-भक्तानाम् अकर्मणाम् । जन्म-मृत्यु-जरा-व्याधि-भयꣳ तेषाꣳ न विद्यते ॥९॥ मन्-मन्त्रोपासकश् चैव स्वतन्त्रो नित्य-विग्रहः । पुनर् न विद्यते जन्म मन्त्र-ग्रहण-मात्रतः ॥१०॥ नास्ति कालाद् भयꣳ तस्य न निषेकाद् विधेर् अपि । मन्त्र-ग्रहण-मात्रेण मुच्यते सर्व-कर्मणः ॥११॥ मन्-मन्त्रो हि देहात् पापꣳ कोटि-जन्म-कृतꣳ च यत् । सुदीप्तो ज्वलद्-अग्निश् च तृण-पुञ्जꣳ देहाद् यथा ॥१२॥ मन्-मन्त्र-ग्रहणाद् योगान् मन्-नाम-ग्रहणस्य वा । तेषाꣳ पापानि वेपन्ते कोटि-जन्म-कृतानि च ॥१३॥ यमस् तन्-नाम-लिखनꣳ दूरी-भूतꣳ करोति च । अन्ते दास्यꣳ च लभते गत्वा गोलोकम् उत्तमम् ॥१४॥ यावद् आयुर् भ्रमेत् तावत् स्वतन्त्रो मत्त-कुञ्जरः । ततः पापाः फलायन्ते वैनतेयाद् इवोरगाः ॥१५॥ तेषाꣳ च पाद-रजसा सद्यः पूता वसुन्धरा । पुनाति सर्व-तीर्थानि दूरतो दर्शनाद् अपि ॥१६॥ पूतश् च पवनो वह्निर् जलꣳ च तुलसी-दलम् । पूतान्य् एव हि तीर्थानि गङ्गादीनि च गायन ॥१७॥ पूता सुशीला धर्मिष्ठा सुव्रता स्त्री पति-व्रता । मन्-मन्त्रोपासकाश् चैव तेभ्यः पूतोत्तमाः सदा ॥१८॥ मन्त्रोपासकानाꣳ च तीर्थ-स्थानꣳ व्रतꣳ सुत । श्राद्धꣳ दानꣳ पूजनꣳ च यथा चर्वित-चर्वणम् ॥१९॥ भक्त्या तीर्थानि पूतानि स्वतः पूतो हि वैष्णवः । तत् तन्त्रꣳ च तथा दान-मलꣳ श्राद्धꣳ च निष्फलम् ॥२०॥ श्राद्धस्य सम्प्रदानꣳ च कर्तुश् च पुरुष-त्रयम् । पुरुषाणाꣳ शतꣳ मुक्तꣳ को भुङ्क्ते श्राद्ध-वस्तु च ॥२१॥ केचिद् एवꣳ वदन्तीति पितृ-लोकार्थम् एव च । तद्-विरुद्धꣳ च ते तुष्टा मन्त्र-ग्रहण-मात्रतः ॥२२॥ तेषाꣳ शुभाशिषꣳ कर्म नैव भोगाय कल्पते । देवान् न प्रभवेद् वत्स सिद्ध-धान्ये यथाङ्कुरः ॥२३॥ साक्षात् करोति तेषाꣳ च कर्म-मूल-निकृन्तनम् । मन्त्रोपासकाद् अन्ये कर्म-भोगꣳ च भुञ्जते ॥२४॥ मया स्वयꣳ प्रदत्तश् च स्व-मन्त्रः पुरुषाय च । पर-द्वाराद् ग्राहयित्वा भक्तꣳ मुक्तꣳ करोम्य् अहम् ॥२५॥ मया प्रदत्त-मन्त्रश् च पुरा मृत्युञ्जयस् तथा । मृत्युञ्जयाय गोलोके शुद्ध-सत्त्व-गुणाय च ॥२६॥ पुनः सनत्-कुमाराय धर्माय ब्रह्मणे तथा । कपिलाय च शेषाय गणेशाय च महा-मते ॥२७॥ नारायणर्षये चैव धर्म-पुत्राय धीमते । पुनर् महा-विष्णवे च विश्वानि यस्य लोमसु ॥२८॥ कालाधिष्ठातृ-देवाय तस्मै सर्वान्तकाय च । उपेन्द्राय च कामाय भृगवे ऽङ्गिरसे तथा ॥२९॥ सरस्वत्यै च पद्मायै राधायै विरजा-तटे । शवित्र्यै विष्णु-मायायै पार्षदेभ्यश् च पुत्रक ॥३०॥ तुभ्यꣳ न दत्तो मन्त्रो ऽत्र श्रूयताꣳ तन् निमित्तकम् । जनिष्यसि शूद्र-योनौ ब्रह्मणो वाक्य-पालनात् ॥३१॥ इत्य् एवꣳ कथितꣳ सर्वꣳ गच्छ वत्स यथा सुखम् । द्वादशाब्दान्तरे शूद्र-योनौ देवाज् जनिष्यसि ॥३२॥ पञ्च-वर्षाभ्यन्तरे च मन्-मन्त्रꣳ प्राप्य विप्रतः । दशाब्दान्ते वपुस् त्यक्त्वा ब्रह्म-पुत्रो भविष्यसि ॥३३॥ मन्-मन्त्रꣳ पुनर् एवेति शम्भु-वक्त्राल् लभिष्यसि । इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा सर्वात्मा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥३४॥ गन्धर्वः प्रययौ तस्माद् योषिद्भिः सह पुत्रक । इत्य् एवꣳ कथितꣳ सर्वꣳ पूर्व-वृत्तान्तम् एव च ॥३५॥ इति श्री-नारद-पञ्च-रात्रे ज्ञानामृत-सारे प्रथमैक-रात्रे गन्धर्व-मोक्षणꣳ नाम त्रयोदशो ऽध्यायः ॥१३॥ …

trayodaśo 'dhyāyaḥ śrī-śuka uvāca— stotrāntare ca kāle ca kiṁ rahasyaṁ babhūva ha | tan me kathaya bhadraṁ te bhagavan bhagavad-vacaḥ ||1|| śrī-vyāsa uvāca— stotrāntare ca kāle ca gandharvaś copavarhaṇaḥ | uvāca brahma-saṁsadi bhagavantaṁ sanātanam ||2|| sarvair devair ahaṁ śaptaś cādhunā deva-hetunā | devānām agni-puñjaś ca pradīptaś ca sumeruvat ||3|| adhunā ca tvayi gate bhasmāsān māṁ kariṣyati | ato rakṣa jagannātha māṁ samuddhartum arhasi ||4|| tvad-aṁśa-śūkareṇaiva dharoddhāraḥ kṛtaḥ purā | hiraṇyākhyaṁ mahā-daityaṁ nihatya cāvalīlayā ||5|| pādma-padmārcita-pade padme te śaraṇāgatam | mām anāthaṁ bhayākrāntaṁ rakṣa rakṣa surānalāt ||6|| gandharvasya vacaḥ śrutvā prahasya jagad-īśvaraḥ | uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā brahmeśo brahma-saṁsadi ||7|| atha gandharva-mokṣaṇam śrī-bhagavān uvāca— gandharva-rāja-pravara sthiro bhava bhayaṁ tyaja | śubhāśrayasya bhaktasya bhayaṁ kiṁ te mayi sthite ||8|| sarvebhyo 'pi bhayaṁ nāsti mad-bhaktānām akarmaṇām | janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-bhayaṁ teṣāṁ na vidyate ||9|| man-mantropāsakaś caiva svatantro nitya-vigrahaḥ | punar na vidyate janma mantra-grahaṇa-mātrataḥ ||10|| nāsti kālād bhayaṁ tasya na niṣekād vidher api | mantra-grahaṇa-mātreṇa mucyate sarva-karmaṇaḥ ||11|| man-mantro hi dehāt pāpaṁ koṭi-janma-kṛtaṁ ca yat | sudīpto jvalad-agniś ca tṛṇa-puñjaṁ dehād yathā ||12|| man-mantra-grahaṇād yogān man-nāma-grahaṇasya vā | teṣāṁ pāpāni vepante koṭi-janma-kṛtāni ca ||13|| yamas tan-nāma-likhanaṁ dūrī-bhūtaṁ karoti ca | ante dāsyaṁ ca labhate gatvā golokam uttamam ||14|| yāvad āyur bhramet tāvat svatantro matta-kuñjaraḥ | tataḥ pāpāḥ phalāyante vainateyād ivoragāḥ ||15|| teṣāṁ ca pāda-rajasā sadyaḥ pūtā vasundharā | punāti sarva-tīrthāni dūrato darśanād api ||16|| pūtaś ca pavano vahnir jalaṁ ca tulasī-dalam | pūtāny eva hi tīrthāni gaṅgādīni ca gāyana ||17|| pūtā suśīlā dharmiṣṭhā suvratā strī pati-vratā | man-mantropāsakāś caiva tebhyaḥ pūtottamāḥ sadā ||18|| mantropāsakānāṁ ca tīrtha-sthānaṁ vrataṁ suta | śrāddhaṁ dānaṁ pūjanaṁ ca yathā carvita-carvaṇam ||19|| bhaktyā tīrthāni pūtāni svataḥ pūto hi vaiṣṇavaḥ | tat tantraṁ ca tathā dāna-malaṁ śrāddhaṁ ca niṣphalam ||20|| śrāddhasya sampradānaṁ ca kartuś ca puruṣa-trayam | puruṣāṇāṁ śataṁ muktaṁ ko bhuṅkte śrāddha-vastu ca ||21|| kecid evaṁ vadantīti pitṛ-lokārtham eva ca | tad-viruddhaṁ ca te tuṣṭā mantra-grahaṇa-mātrataḥ ||22|| teṣāṁ śubhāśiṣaṁ karma naiva bhogāya kalpate | devān na prabhaved vatsa siddha-dhānye yathāṅkuraḥ ||23|| sākṣāt karoti teṣāṁ ca karma-mūla-nikṛntanam | mantropāsakād anye karma-bhogaṁ ca bhuñjate ||24|| mayā svayaṁ pradattaś ca sva-mantraḥ puruṣāya ca | para-dvārād grāhayitvā bhaktaṁ muktaṁ karomy aham ||25|| mayā pradatta-mantraś ca purā mṛtyuñjayas tathā | mṛtyuñjayāya goloke śuddha-sattva-guṇāya ca ||26|| punaḥ sanat-kumārāya dharmāya brahmaṇe tathā | kapilāya ca śeṣāya gaṇeśāya ca mahā-mate ||27|| nārāyaṇarṣaye caiva dharma-putrāya dhīmate | punar mahā-viṣṇave ca viśvāni yasya lomasu ||28|| kālādhiṣṭhātṛ-devāya tasmai sarvāntakāya ca | upendrāya ca kāmāya bhṛgave 'ṅgirase tathā ||29|| sarasvatyai ca padmāyai rādhāyai virajā-taṭe | śavitryai viṣṇu-māyāyai pārṣadebhyaś ca putraka ||30|| tubhyaṁ na datto mantro 'tra śrūyatāṁ tan nimittakam | janiṣyasi śūdra-yonau brahmaṇo vākya-pālanāt ||31|| ity evaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ gaccha vatsa yathā sukham | dvādaśābdāntare śūdra-yonau devāj janiṣyasi ||32|| pañca-varṣābhyantare ca man-mantraṁ prāpya viprataḥ | daśābdānte vapus tyaktvā brahma-putro bhaviṣyasi ||33|| man-mantraṁ punar eveti śambhu-vaktrāl labhiṣyasi | ity evam uktvā sarvātmā tatraivāntaradhīyata ||34|| gandharvaḥ prayayau tasmād yoṣidbhiḥ saha putraka | ity evaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ pūrva-vṛttāntam eva ca ||35|| iti śrī-nārada-pañca-rātre jñānāmṛta-sāre prathamaika-rātre gandharva-mokṣaṇaṁ nāma trayodaśo 'dhyāyaḥ ||13|| …

English translation

CHAPTER XIII

“ an §uka said :—What mysterious thing, then, happened there etime when the hymns were all uttered. Kindly speak this tome. Bhagavan will do good to you. (1)

§ri Vyasa said :—Upavarhana Gandharva, then, in the midst of that Brahma’s assembly, spoke to the Eternal Bhagavan. (2)

O Deva! It is for my intent devotion to Thee, that my voice was choked ; hence all the Devas had cursed on me- See the mass of fire created by the Devas ; blazing in front like the Mount Sumeru. (3)

; Whenever thou wilt go away from this place, will instantly burn me to ashes. So save me from danger. (4)

In days of yore, Thy part incarnation the great demon Hiranyaksa and rescued aloft. (5)

Save me, save me from the fire of th helpless, without any other to protect him, who is overtaken by fear and who has come for refuge to Thy lotus feet which have been

worshipped so devoutly by Brahma and Padma. (6) s in that assembly, y, and in sweet words. 71)

Gandharvas ! Be clam ;

that mass of fire this impending

of the Creator Brahma ; he becomes freed at once form the fruits of karmas, on being initiated in My Mantra. (11)

My Mantra destroys sins of koti births, as a blazing fire burns hugs heaps of straws to ashes, (12)

On being initiated in My Mantra, and on uttering My Name all their sins, accumulated in crores of births, begin to tremble. (13)

In the end that man goes to the excellent region of Go-loka and acquires my service devotion. (14)

Than man roams abroad throughout his life, free and independent, like a mad elephant. Sinsfly away from him, as snakes run away at the sight of Garuda bird. (15)

By the touch of the dust of their feet, the Earth becomes pure:

instantaneously 3 all the tirthas become sanctified by seeing them from a distance. (16)

_ OSinger ! wind, fire, water, Tulsi-leaves, these are by their

nature pure ; the Ganges and the other Tirthas are also very pure. (17)

Also the modest, religious, chaste women, observing vows are

very very holy ; but those who worship My Mantra are always the purest in comparison to them. (18)

O Child ! Bathing in tirthas, observing vows, performing

sraddhas (funeral obsequies), Presenting gifts and worshipping are simply tautologically useless, as vain tedious reiteration. (19)

By Bhakti. Yoga (religion of love) the tirthas all become pure ;

but the Vaisnavas are naturally pure ; so tantras, gifts and Sraddhas | are all fruitless to him. (20)

Sraddhas are necessary for the appeasement and Satisfaction of the Pitris > Some say this. But here that is contrary ; for, on taking the Mantra, they become satisfied. (22).
