Anuccheda 74

The ocassional partial manifestation of spiritual love (kadacid udbhava-tuccha-vimatratvam) is described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (6.1.19):

sakrn manah krsna-padaravindayor nivesitam tad-guna-ragi yair iha na te yamam pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan svapne 'pi pasyanti hi cirna-niskrtah

"Although not having fully realized Krsna, persons who have even once surrendered completely unto His lotus feet and who have become attracted to His name, form, qualities and pastimes are completely freed of all sinful reactions, for they have thus ac cepted the true method of atonement. Even in dreams, such sur rendered souls do not see Yamaraja or his order carriers, who are equipped with ropes to bind the sinful."

The love felt by these devotees is only the beginning of affection (ranjana). They do not yet feel the pure love (priti) that comes from understanding the Supreme Lord's sweetness in truth. Because love for the Supreme Lord is not yet the only goal of their lives, it is said here that they surrender only once (sakrt) to the Lord. Even so, they never see Yamaraja (na te yamam). For this reason they are more fortunate than Ajamila and many others. The srimad-Bhagavatam quoted in the beginning odf this anuccheda was spoken by srila sukadeva Gosvami.

Anuccheda 75

The first manifestation of spiritual love (prathamodaya) is described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (1.18.22):

yatranuraktah hasaiva dhira>3 vyapohya dehadisu sangam udham>3 vrajanti tat parama-hamsyam antyam>3 yasminn ahimsopasamah sva-dharmah>3

"Self-controlled persons who are attached to the Supreme Lord Sri Krsna can all of a sudden give up the world of material attachment, including the gross body and subtle mind, and go away to attain the highest perfection of the renounced order of life, by which nonviolence and renunciation are consequential."

In this verse the words "antyam paramahamsyam" mean "The state of being a swan-like devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead". The words beginning with yasmin" describe the qualities of such devotees. This verse was spoken by srila Suta Gosvmami.

Anuccheda 76

sri Priyavrata's attainment of the full manifestation of spiritual love (prakatodayavastha) is described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (5.1.1-3):

priyavrato bhagavata atmaramah katham mune grhe 'ramata yan-mulah karma-bandhah parabhavah. . .

"King Pariksit inquired from Sukadeva Gosvami: O great sage, why did King Priyavrata, who was a great, self- realized devotee of the Lord, remain in household life, which is the root cause of the bondage of karma [fruitive activities] and which defeats the mission of human life? "Devotees are certainly liberated persons. Therefore, O greatest of the brahmanas, they cannot possibly be absorbed in family affairs. "Elevated mahatmas who have taken shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are fully satiated by the shade of those lotus feet. Their consciousness cannot possibly become attached to family members."

The description continues in this verse of srimad-Bhagavatam (5.1.4):

samsayo'yam han brahman daragara-sutadisu saktasya yat siddhir abhut krsne ca matir acyuta

"The King continued: O great brahmana, this is my great doubt. Mow was it possible for a person like King Priyavrata, who was so attached to wife, children and home, to achieve the topmost infallible perfection in Krsna consciousness?"

The answer to the king's question is given in this prose passage of srimad-Bhagavatam (5.1.5):

badham uktam bhagavata uttamaslokasya srimac-carana- ravinda-makaranda-rasa avesita-cetaso bhagavata-paramahamsa- dayita-katham kincid antaraya-vihatam svam sivatamam padavim na prayena hinvanti.

"What you have said is correct. The glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is praised in eloquent, transcendental verses by such exalted personalities as Brahma, are very pleasing to great devotees and liberated persons. One who is attached to the nectarean honey of the Lord's lotus feet, and whose mind is always absorbed in His glories, may sometimes be checked by some impediment, but he still never gives up the exalted position he has acquired."

srila sridhara Svami comments:

"With the word `badham' here the statements of Maharaja Pariksit are accepted and his doubts are dispelled. With the word `badham' the truth that Maharaja Priyavrata was not attached to material things is confirmed. Even if material things may sometimes have been an impediment, because of his pervious activities in devotional service he was able to turn from material things and again become rapt in devotional service."

This truth is also confirmed by these words spoken by Lord Visnu to Maharaja Prthu (srimad-Bhagavatam 4.20.12):

drstasu sampatsu vipatsu surayo na vikriyante mayi baddha-sauhrdah

"My devotee who is connected with Me in intense friendship and affection, being completely in knowledge, is never agitated by material happiness and distress."

For example, Agastya Muni was not angry when he was not offered respect by Maharaja Indradyumna. The sage acted as he did only to teach the king how to properly honor the Vaisnavas. For the same reason Narada Muni cursed the two sons of Kuvera. This is described in srimad-Bhagavatam (10.10.7):

tayor anugraharthaya sapam dasyann idam jagau

"Devarsi Narada, in order to show them special mercy, desired to give them a special curse. Thus he spoke as follows."

Desiring to bring him to His side, Lord Krsna arranged that Maharaja Pariksit would insult a brahmana. This is described in the following words of Maharaja Pariksit in srimad- Bhagavatam (1.19.14):

tasyaiva me 'ghasya paravareso vyasakta-cittasya grhesv abhiksnam nirveda-mulo dvija-sapa-rupo yatra prasakto bhayam asu dhatte

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, the controller of both the transcendental and mundane worlds, has graciously overtaken me in the form of a brahmana's curse. Due to my being too much attached to family like, the Lord, in order to save me, has appeared before me in such a way that only out of fear I will detach myself from the world."

Many other scripture passages may be quoted to show these truths. Althoughhe manifested only a reflection of material attachment (tad-abhasa), he still was placed in an uncomfortable situation, and he did indeed renounce his material situation. He said (srimad-Bhagavatam 5.1.37):

aho asadhv anusthitam. . .

"Alas, how condemned I have become because of my sense gratification! I have now fallen into material enjoyment, which is exactly like a covered well. I have had enough! I am not going to enjoy any more. Just see how I have become like a dancing monkey in the hands of my wife. Because of this, I am condemned."

The srimad-Bhagavatam verse quoted in the beginning of this anuccheda was spoken by srila sukadeva Gosvami.

The outward signs that one has attained the full manifestation of spiritual love (prakatodayavastha) are described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (7.4.42):

sa uttama-sloka-padaravindayor nisevayakincana-sanga-labdhaya tanvan param nirvrtim atmano muhur duhsanga-dinasya manah samam vyadhat

"Because of hsi association with perrfect, unalloyed devotees who had nothing to do with anything material, Prahlada Maharaja constantly engaged in the service of the Lord's lotus feet. By seeing his bodily features when he was in perfect ecstasy, persons very poor in spiritual understanding became purified. In other words, Prahlada Maharaja bestowed upon them transcendental bliss."

srila sridhara Svami comments:

"In this verse it is said: `By seeing his bodily features when he was in perfect ecstasy, persons very poor in spiritual understanding became purified. In other words, Prahlada Maharaja bestowed upon them transcendental bliss.' "

Here the word "samam" may also be interprweted to mean, "He made their hearts like hsi heart". This verse was spoken by sri Narada to Maharaja Yudhisthira.

Anuccheda 78

The stage when there is no longer any contact with material desire, and the Suprmee Lord's glory is revealed (tad-darsita- prabhava) may be seen in srila sukadeva Gosvami and other great devotees. It is described in these words of sri Narayana- pancaratra:

bhavonmatto hareh kincin na veda sukham atmanah duhkham ceti mahesani paramananda aplutah

"Overcome with ecstatic love, he is no longer aware of material pleasures or pains. He is flooded with spiritual bliss."

In this way the different varieties of loving devotion (priti-bhakti) are described. The nature and qualities of loving devotion are also described by Lord Krsna Himself in thsee verses of Bhagavaed-gita (10.8-10):

aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate iti matva bhajante mam budha bhava-samanvitah

"I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.

mac-citta mad-gata-prana bodhayantah parasparam kathayantas ca mam nityam tusyanti ca ramanti ca

"The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam dadami buddhi-yogam tam yena mam upayanti te

"To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me."

What follows is the gist of description of the characteristics of pure spiritual love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The devotees' love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, love that enters the heart and makes one ignore a host of petty rules and rituals, love full of bliss, love that cannot be limited by anything else, love that cannot tolerate any material apiration, love that is manifested from the Lord's hladini sakti, love that has the form of knowledge of the Lord, the desire to attain the Lord, following the Lord's commands, and favorable service to the Lord, love that fills the devotees' thoughts, love that has a form sweeter than nectar, love that decorates the devotees' eyes with pearls that are tears, the devotees' tongues with confidential descriptions of the Lord, and the devotees' other limbs with other like ornaments, love that is a treasure-house of all glories and virtues, love that grants the great goal of life, the goal of becoming the Supreme Lord's servant, love that is like the Supreme Lord's faithful wife, love that charms the Supreme Lord's heart, love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Lord who is like a moon effulgent with the moonlight of spieritual bliss, the Lord whose sweetness is without equal or superior, the Lord who is eternally situated in the mode of pure transcendental goodness above maya's realm, the Lord whose limitless pastimes are the life of the realm of transcendental goodness and the great treasure that brings auspiciousness to all the worlds, shines with great splendor. Lord Krsna, who, as revealed in the Krsna-sandarbha, is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the highest object of the devotees' love. Therefore one should study the ways to love Him. Love may be directed to any form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How much more, then, should one love Lord Krsna, the original form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead?

Complete love for Lord Krsna, the complete and original Supreme Personality of Godhead, is revealed in these words addressed to Lord Krsna (srimad-Bhagavatam 10.84.21):

adya no janma-saphalyam vidyayas tapaso drsah tvaya sangamya sad-gatya yad antah sreyasam parah

"Today our birth, education, austerity, and vision have all become perfect because we have been able to associate with You, the goal of all saintly persons. Indeed, You Yourself are the ultimate, supreme blessing."

This verse means: "Today, on the occasion of Your appearance in this world, our birth, education, austerity, and vision have all become perfect because we, Vasistha, the four Kumaras, Vamadeva, Markandeya, Narada, Krsna Dvaipayana Vyasa, and a host opf other sages, who have all directly experienced the Supreme Brahman, and who are expert in tasting the nectar of various kinds of devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and who have seen many different incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, have been able to associate with You, O Lord Krsna, who are the goal of all saintly persons, saintly persons who have faith in You alone. Indeed, You Yourself are the ultimate, supreme, limitless blessing, a blessing far greater than the blessings, the spiritual goals of life, the perfections of life we had previously attained when Your various incarnations were present here."

This verse was spoken by the great sages to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The glories of Lord Krsna are also described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (11.6.1-5):

atha brahmatmajaih devaih prajesair avrto 'bhyagat bhavas ca bhuta-bhavyeso yayau bhuta-ganair vrtah. . .

. . . vyacaksatavitrptaksah krsnam adbhuta-darsanam

"Lord Brahma then set off for Dvaraka, accompanied by his own sons as well as by the demigods and the great Prajapatis. Lord siva, the bestower of auspiciousness to all living beings, also went, surrounded by amny ghostly creatures. "The powerful Lord Indra, along with the Maruts, Adityas, Vasus, Asvinis, Rbhus, Angiras, Rudras, Visvadevas, Sadhyas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Nagas, Siddhas, Caranas, Guhyakas, rthe great sages and forefathers, and the Vidyadharas and Kinnaras, arrived at the city of Dvaraka hoping to see Lord Krsna. By His transcendental form, Krsna, the Supreme Lord, enchanted all human biengs and spread His own fame throughout the worlds. The Lord's glories destroy all contamination within the universe. "In that resplendent city of Dvaraka, rich with all superior opulences, the demigods beheld with unsatiated eyes the wonderful form of sri Krsna."

In this last verse the word "adbhuta" means more wonderful than any of the other forms of the Lord". These verses were spoken by srila sukadeva Gosvami.

Lord Krsna's glories are also described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (3.2.12):

yan martya-lilaupayikam sva-yoga- maya-balam darsayata grhitam vismapanam svasya ca sau bhagarddheh param padam bhusana-bhu-sanangam

"The Lord appeared in the mortal world by His internal potency, yogamaya. He came in His eternal form, which is just suitable for His pastimes. These pastimes were wonderful for everyone, even for those proud of their own opulence, including the Lord Himself in His form as the Lond of Vaikuntha. Thus His [Sri Krsna's] transcendental body is the ornament of all ornaments."

In this the word "yoga-maya-balam" means the power of His spiritual potency (cit-sakti)", darsayata" means "manifesting His glories and opulences", and "vsimapanam" means "His glories and opulences fill with wonder the sages and philosophers". That is not all. The sages and philosophers have never seen any form like His. Therefore because his form is now manifest before them, they are at every moment filled with wonder (svasya vsimapanam). This is som because His form is the supreme abode of glory and opulence (saubhagarddheh). Here someone may ask: "He may be very glorious and opulent, but does He not indeed wear ornaments to decorate His body?" This question is answered here in the words "His (sri Krsna's) body is the ornament of all ornaments". Next someone may ask: "What is sri Krsna's form like?" To this the answer is given: "His spiritual form is superficially like that of a human being (martya- lilaupayikam). Lord Krsna's form is so glorious even Lord Visnu yearns to see it. This is confirmed by the following words spoken by Lord Visnu in His form as the Maha-kalapuradhipa (srimad- Bhagavatam (10.89.58):

"O Krsna and Arjuna, I brought the brahmana's sons here because I yearn to see You."

This is also described in the Hari-vamsa, Visnu-parva (114.8) where Lord Krsna says:

"Lord Visnu took those children because He yearned to see Me."

The srimad-Bhagavatam verse quoted in the beginning of this anuccheda was spoken by sriman Uddhava to Vidura.

Srila Jiva Gosvami's

Sri Priti-sandarbha

is so glorious even Lord Visnu yearns to see it. This is confirmed by the following words spoken by Lord Visnu in His form as the Maha-kalapuradhipa (srimad- Bhagavatam (10.89.58):

"O Krsna and Arjuna, I brought the brahmana's sons here because I yearn to see You."

In describing Maharaja Pariksit's many virtues, some brahmanas who yearned to see Lord Krsna compared Maharaja Pariksit's virtues to Lord Krsna's supreme virtues. They said (srimad-Bhagavatam 1.12.24):

esa krsnam anuvratah

"This child will be almost as good as Lord sri Krsna by following in His footsteps."

Of course, this does not mean that Maharaja Pariksit is equal to Lord Krsna. Lord Krsna is so glorious that He naturally arouses love for HIm in His devotees. This is seen in the following prayers from srimad-Bhagavatam (1.9.39-40):

vijaya-ratha-kutumbha. . . . . .yam iha niriksya hata gatah sva-rupam

"At the moment of death, let my ultimate attraction be to Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead. I concentrate my mind upon the chariot driver of Arjuna who stood with a whip in His right hand and a bridle rope in His left, who was very careful to give protection to Arjuna's chariot by all means. Those who saw Him on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra attained their original forms after death.

lalita-gati-vilasa-valguhasa- pranaya-niriksana-kalpitoru manah krta-manu-krta-vatya unmadandhah prakrtim agan kila yasya gopa-vadhvah

"Let my mind be fixed upon Lord Sri Krsna, whose motions and smiles of love attracted the damsels of Vrajadhama (the gopis). The damsels imitated the characteristic movements of the Lord (after His disappearance from the rasa dance)."

How exalted is the kind of liberation described in these verses, sarupya liberation, where the devotee attains a spiritual form like that of the Lord? The gopis' activity of imitating Lord Krsna's pastimes is described in these owrds of Ujjvala-nilamani (Anubhava-prakarana 28):

priyanukaranam lila. . .

"The gopis imitated Lord Krsna's pastimes."

The word "prakrtim" in srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.40 means "own nature". The gopis were so overwhelmed with love they thought their nature and Lord Krsna's nature had become one. This kind of great ecstasy (maha-bhava) is described in these words of Ujjvala-nilamani (Sthayi-bhava-prakarana 143):

radhayah bhavatas ca citta-jatuni svedair vilapya kramad yunjann adri-nikunja-kunjara-pate nirdhuta-bheda-bhramam citraya svayam anvaranjayad iha brahmanda-harmyodare bhuyobhir nava-raga-hingula-bharaih srngara-karuh krti

"O my Lord, You live in the forest of Govardhana Hill, and, like the king of elephants, You are expert in the art of conjugal love. O master of the universe, Your heart and srimati Radharani's heart are just like shallac and are now melted in Your spiritual perspiration. Therefore You can no longer distinguish between You and srimati Radharani. Now You have mixed Your newly invoked affection, which is like vermilion, with Your melted hearts, and for the benefit of the whole world You have painted both Your hearts red within this great palace of the universe."

Two verses from srimad-Bhagavatam (1.9.39-40) quoted here were spoken by Bhisma to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

How Lord Krsna makes the devotees fall in love with Him is also described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (9.24.65):

yasyananam makara-kundala-caru-karna- bhrajat-kapola-subhagam savilasa-hasam nityotsavam na tatrpur drsibhih pibantyo naryo naras ca muditah kupita nimes ca

"Krsna's face is decorated with ornaments, such as earrings resembling sharks. His ears are beautiful, His cheeks brilliant, and His smiling attractive to everyone. Whoever sees Lord Krsna sees a festival. His face and body are fully satisfying for everyone to see, but the devotees are angry at the creator for the disturbance caused by the momentary blinking of their eyes."

srila sridhara Svami comments:

"To teach the reader, the auther here describes the glory of Lord Krsna's face."

Here devotees become angry (kupitah) if their eyes blink (nimeh) as they gaze at Lord Krsna. This anger is the way of maha-bhava ecstatic love. In this way the perfection of that love is described. This verse was spoken by srila sukadeva Gosvami.

How Lord Krsna makes the devotees fall in love with Him is also described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (10.29.40):

ka stry anga te kala-padayata. . .

"Dear Krsna, what woman in all the three worlds wouldn't deviate from religious behavior when bewildered by the sweet, drawn-out melody of Your flute? Your beauty makes all three worlds auspicious. Indeed, even the cows, birds, trees and deer manifest the ecstatic symptom of bodily hair standing on end when they see Your beautiful form."

This is also described in these words of srimad-Bhagavatam (10.21.19):

aspandanam gati-matam pulakas tarunam. . .

"When Lord Krsna plays on His flute, the sweet music causes the moving living entities to become stunned and the nonmoving trees to tremble with ecstasy. These things are certainly very wonderful."

That Lord Krsna makes even the trees and vines tremble in ecstasy is confirmed by these words of Bilvamangala Thakura:

santv avatara bahavah puskara-nabhasya sarvato-bhadrah krsnad anyah ko va latasv api pramodo bhavati

"The lotus-naveled Supreme Personality of Godhead has many glorious and auspicious incarnations. Still, who but Lord Krsna Himself would bring ecstatic joy to the flowering vines?"

The srimad-Bhagavatam verse (10.29.40) quoted in the beginning of this anuccheda was spoken by the goddesseslike gopis of Vraja.
