Of the twelve Ādityas, I am the Āditya named Viṣṇu. Of the lights I am the sun, the radiant one among those that give light. Of the Maruts, the kinds of Marut-deity, I am the one named Marīci. Of the constellations I am the moon, Candramas.

Of the Adityas, who number twelve, that eminent twelfth Aditya named Vishnu, I am he. Of the lights that give light in the world, the radiant troop of Adityas, the sun, I am that. Of the Maruts, the eminent one who is Marichi, I am he. Of the constellations I am the moon. This genitive is not one of selection, but is like 'of beings I am consciousness': the lord of the constellations, the moon, I am he.

He is 'Vishnu' from His all-pervadingness, His entering all, and the rest; for the roots 'vishl', meaning to pervade, and 'vish', meaning to enter, are read. So the Moksha-dharma says, 'I am the goal of all beings, and also their begetter, O Bharata; by My pervading, heaven and earth are Mine, O Partha, and surpassing is My splendour. I have entered into the elements, and I am that whole, O Bharata; and because I stride (kramana), O Partha, I am named Vishnu' (Mahabharata 12.341.42-43).
