Those whose vow, observance and devotion are to the gods go to the gods. The followers of the ancestors, given to rites such as the śrāddha, devoted to the ancestors, go to the ancestors, the Agniṣvāttas and the rest. The worshippers of the spirits, those who honour the spirits, go to the spirits, the Vināyaka, the troop of Mothers, the Four Sisters and the like. My worshippers, those given to worshipping Me, the Vaiṣṇavas, go to Me alone. Though the effort is the same, they do not worship Me alone, out of ignorance, and so they come to share a small fruit. Not only is the fruit of My devotees endless, marked by non-return; I am also easily worshipped. How?

The word 'vow' (vrata) denotes resolve. The votaries of the gods are those whose resolve is to sacrifice to the gods, 'we sacrifice to Indra and the rest by the new-moon and full-moon rites and the like'; they go to the gods, Indra and the rest. And those whose resolve is to sacrifice to the fathers, 'we sacrifice to the fathers by the rites to the fathers and the like', they go to the fathers. And those whose resolve is to sacrifice to beings, 'we sacrifice to the beings, yakshas, rakshasas, pishachas, and the like', they go to the beings. But those who, by those very sacrifices, with the resolve 'we sacrifice to the supreme Self, the Blessed Vasudeva, who has the gods, the fathers, and the beings for His body', sacrifice to Me, they, My sacrificers, go to Me alone. The votaries of the gods and the rest, having attained the gods and the rest, having with them enjoyed a bounded enjoyment, become, at the time of their destruction, destroyed together with them; but My sacrificers, having attained Me, who am without beginning or end, all-knowing, of true resolve, the great ocean of the unsurpassed, limitless, countless host of auspicious qualities, of unsurpassed and limitless bliss, do not return again. This is the meaning. For My sacrificers there is this difference too. The Lord says it.
