Uddhava, shall we free ourselves from you by quarreling, or remain here holding silence? We already burn alone, and your words set the scorched still more aflame—tell us, who is truly ill-spoken? When two black ones share a single nature, whose heart can trust them? Let someone like you converse with you—you have come carrying yoga. Whoever wants yoga may take it and smear herself with ash. Why would the attributeless please those whose hearts meditate upon Nandanandana? Carry this message to Sūr's Lord: your attributeless doctrine is darkness. You must reap what you yourself have sown; now find your own deliverance.

Mother, such is the consequence of a single mistake. Cloth dipped in safflower dye flashes brightly for only a moment, then turns pale again. A poor farmer labors over his field, plowing it nine times over. Even after so much work, pitiless water surges in and carries everything away. All the gopīs say to Uddhava: listen carefully to the truth of our words. Sūrdās says: separated from the Lord, his people are like mustard seed scattered into sand.

Bee, merely hearing of yoga frightens the mind. You too are called exceedingly clever, yet you cannot understand even this much. There are countless other flowers, fragrant, cool, and lovely—why do you exhaust yourself in a forest of red lotuses and reject all the rest? The sun is a supreme mass of majestic radiance and steals the brilliance of everyone; why does the cakora not abandon the deer-marked moon and meditate upon the sun? You reverse all wisdom while teaching, and hearing it again and again burns our lives. Libertine, tell us: why does excellent mango fruit not grow upon a rose-apple tree? The swan's life endures only so long as it grazes upon pearls at the appointed shore. Without its chosen sustenance, Sūr says, it declines utterly, like a fish dying in anguish without water.

The heart was fashioned, then came and fastened itself again. What is broken may be joined through many efforts, but the flaw never disappears. Love founded upon deceit is like tethering a spotless cow for a dishonest purpose. When milk has curdled into sourness, who can eat it for delight? A jujube growing forever beside a banana tree shakes in the wind and wounds it again and again. A drop of Svāti falling into a serpent's mouth becomes poison. However many praises you invent and tell of him, the nature remains the same. Sūrdās asks: what business can a washerman conduct in a city of naked ascetics?

Uddhava, the heart accepts only what it loves. The worm of poison abandons grapes, dates, and nectar-fruit to consume poison. If someone offers camphor to the cakora, will it abandon the glowing ember of the moon and be satisfied? Those branches we see blooming with flower after crimson flower—without Hari, the blossoms strike like showers of sparks, falling as burning coals upon my limbs. How can I go to the landing place, companion, and wander along the riverbank? The Yamunā has risen and overflowed, filled by the water of these eyes. Companion, the water of these eyes has made the courtyard itself into a river. I wish to climb upon that flood and travel toward union with Śyāma. Dear Uddhava, I fall at your feet—make just one circuit of this Braj. At night no sleep comes, by day no food appeals, and watching the road has dimmed my sight. Dark, dense forests spread through Vṛndāvana, and the lovely river flows dark as well. Yet without the one Śyāma, no other darkness pleases me; I have lost awareness and babble like a madwoman. Abandoning shame, I would walk to him myself, but the fever of separation rises and I cannot move. Sūrdās pleads: Lord, grant your vision swiftly, and your fame will spread through the world.

I believed Mādhava had given me his love. He met the lotus with great tenderness like a bee, then took the nectar from its mouth. Better even was Pūtanā, whose life he drank together with her milk. He drank every drop of the mind's honey, but left the body utterly empty; that has given a greater pain. Seeing me unconscious, he once watered the heart with the nectar of his glance, then went away. Yaśodā's message to Devakī: ‘Carry this message to Devakī. I remained only the nurse of your son, always tending him with affection. At the mere sight of cleansing paste, oil, and warm water, he used to run away. Whatever he asked for, I gave him; only through one little task after another could I bathe him. You must already know all his habits, yet I cannot help telling you. When my darling boy rises in the morning, he loves fresh butter and bread. Night and day, Sūr says, one great worry remains in my heart: perhaps my curly-haired darling is now too shy to ask for what he wants.’
