Bee, yoga cannot be conveyed through messages. No one in Braj will listen to it, though you make ten million attempts at instruction. At sunrise the cakravākī trusts that she will meet her mate; evening is the time of her dread. Why do the poor cātakas dwell in the forest, vulnerable to the hunters' designs? A city without its one lord stands empty; all its other business is useless. Sūr asks: how can a black nature be erased when the custom of its lineage is to bite?

This is the fear that keeps him from returning to Gokula. Listen, companion: he remains in Mathurā remembering what we used to make him do. ‘The children will come wake me after midnight. Once again they will send me barefoot into the forest to graze the cows. They will stop me in an empty house as I steal curds and fresh butter. They will seize me and take me before Yaśodā, dancing and singing all the way. The cowherd women will bind me again, pelting me with endless words.’ Remembering so many hardships, Sūr says, whose heart would go back to endure them?

Since then no one else has returned. Uddhava alone came once and obtained some little inquiry into our condition. This is what we ponder, companion: why has Mādhava imposed so long a delay? The Lord of Gokula has never once shown mercy by writing and sending a letter. Building such hope upon the appointed time, this mind will now go mad. Sūrdās says: the cātaka has called and clouds have covered the sky.

My mind remained in Mathurā. When it left the body it never returned; Gopāla seized and held it. These eyes did not know its secret—what informer told him? I had stolen his form and hidden it within consciousness, yet Hari somehow discovered it. Uddhava comes and, without him, says, ‘Give up the jewel and take clay in exchange.’ He asks for Govinda in barter for the attributeless—how could such pain be endured? The very support by which this body has somehow lasted until today he now wishes to tear away. Hear Sūr: he means to set the heart ablaze.

People all offer words that sound pleasing. A thing is easy while it is being spoken, but when the time comes to do it, speech itself fails. Before entering the fire, a devoted wife hears that it is cool as sandalwood and rises eagerly; once she learns what it truly is, who remains afterward to tell the news? Everyone calls battle exceedingly easy and its sword a flowering vine. Sūrdās says: after a warrior has given his head, who remains to reconsider?

Companion, when the Lord of Braj departed today, all confidence in these eyes was lost. They did not fly forth like birds to meet Hari, nor did they go and become one with rain-dark Śyāma. Cruel, crooked, and black, they stole the fish's beauty in vain. Though called connoisseurs of form and greedy for it, they did not perform even that much. Why grieve and release water now? The moment has passed, and every day brings a new thorn. Sūrdās says: they became inert from the very moment the eyelids betrayed them.

Who will tell Hari our story? We understood everything in our hearts the moment the bee was appointed his representative. The two share one nature and one deceitful course, and therefore those very qualities delight the heart of each. When lovely new lotuses are opening, why should he come to Braj for the sake of flame-red kiṁśuka flowers? Fickle for the nectar of lotus and campaka along the water's edge, the bee's way differs from everyone else's. Living in Mathurā under that bee's influence, Sūr's Lord has forgotten all memory of us.

Our Śyāma intends to journey farther away. While he lived in Mathurā there was still hope, companion; now we shall die grieving. Who said this? Where did you hear it? In which direction did you see the chariot's dust? Let us all go together with Mādhava, or else perish wasting away. In the western direction lies a city called Dvārakā, with the ocean full of water around it. Sūr asks: how can the young women live when Śyāma, the very life-restoring herb, departs?

Who will come from so far away? If I place a message in someone's hand, where will she find Kanhā to deliver it? They speak of a country upon the ocean shore; the mind cannot run toward a place it has neither seen nor heard. There Nanda's son has fashioned a new city, calling the capital Dvārakā. All its enchanting palaces are made of gold; neither king nor beggar shelters beneath thatch. The people living there have no desire at all to dwell in Braj. The separated woman laments in many ways and turns countless remedies over in her heart. What shall I do, where shall I go? Sūr asks: who will carry me to the Lord—who will bring me to Hari?

Our reliance is upon Nandanandana. When Indra's wrath was sweeping Braj away, he raised the mountain and rescued everyone. None dared question the strength of Rāma and Kṛṣṇa as they fearlessly grazed the herds. Over the heads of all who fell into danger stood the mighty hero as protector. From the time he slew Keśī and Tṛṇāvarta, our trust has never wavered. Sūrdās says: in the wrestling arena Hari won and the king was defeated.

Mother, when the first monsoon arrives in such beauty, let Mādhava remember us and come. Clouds of many colors assume exceedingly lovely forms, and at this season the sky's splendor surpasses everything. Flying cranes and flocks of parrots shine, while cātakas and peacocks call. In countless ways the dreadful clouds and lightning increase the heart's longing and delight. The earth's body thrills with grass like hair raised in joy, knowing her beloved has come; vines separated from their lord embrace the trees again, recognizing their husbands. Swans, cuckoos, parrots, mynas, and swarms of bees sound their many notes; auspicious clouds rain joyfully, and the sorrow of birds has passed. Kuṭaja, jasmine, kadamba, kovidāra, karṇikāra, beautiful lotuses, ketakī, oleander, and shining trees stand lovely as spring. Dense trees are ornamented with buds, virtuous flowers, and fragrance. Beholding them, the eyes awaken hope in the mind of meeting Mādhava. Humans, deer, beasts, and birds—all whose names are numbered and numberless—remember in happiness their native lands, foreign homes, beloveds, and every dwelling. The heart finds no remedy, and no thought or reflection avails; Nandakumāra, though nearby, does not remember the people of Braj. We recall the compassionate Beautiful One—his graceful gait and tender smile, his lovely restless cheeks, and the curved brilliance of his swinging earrings. Flute in hand, singing artful songs, surrounded by many cowherd boys—on what blessed day will these eyes behold his childhood play again? Again and again memory returns, and separation makes us utterly distraught; it strikes like a gust of wind upon a poor lamp's flame. Sūrdās says: hearing this lament, the compassionate Lord is the very faith sustaining our lives. He will grant his vision and remove our sorrow, unable to resist such love.

Every limb is described through the justice of a likeness—so, having gone to Mathurā, why would he return, whose beauty equals ten million gods of love? The peacock crown upon his head displays from afar the splendor of a rainbow; though someone strive ten million ways, no one can touch it even slightly. His curling locks are wandering bees, forever tasting the nectar of vines throughout the forest. Though called dwellers in the chamber of the lotus, each bee keeps its heart fixed upon its own lineage. Poets sing of his makara earrings, lotus eyes, and parrot-like nose. The parrot cannot remain still and knows no night-shame; within its cage it listens while the flute speaks. His bow-like brows steal life, his row of teeth are diamonds, and his lips are lovely bimba fruit. Diamond is hard by nature and its company steals reason; upon such beauty the mind has taken refuge. His immense arms destroy mighty enemies—how can the shoulder remain still when upon it the seven-holed flute recites its heart-enchanting spell?
