Two seasons have never departed from Braj. Monsoon and fierce summer, companion, have both grown stronger without Hari. Rising sighs are the wind and our eyes the clouds; every instrument of water has joined together. Raining, they make the frogs of sorrow reveal themselves, though they had hidden far away. Harsh separation, unbearable as the sun, rises every day. Sūr asks: when the moon Hari has turned his face away, who can remove the body's fever?

Bee, I place you under oath by Gopāla. Does Śyāma ever turn his mind toward this place, or has he utterly forgotten us in his heart? We are poor, witless Ahīr women; even when checked, we stubbornly persist in friendship. He is a sophisticated man of Mathurā, detached and filled in every limb with deceitful cleverness. Tell the truth and give our ears some joy; abandon the crooked fraud within your heart. Sūrdās pleads: Lord, uphold the honor of your celebrated name and remove at least a little of the ridicule we suffer here.

How long can one separated in love preserve herself? Since the Gaṅgā fell from Hari's foot, nothing has ever stopped her flowing. Separated from the sun of his eyes, light wanders lost; the moon still scorches the body. Parted from the lotus of his navel, every lotus has turned to thorns, while the ocean itself has burned into ash. Speech, separated from his words, has become lawless—who can restrain what Fate has done? Sūrdās asks: when she is separated from every one of his limbs, what science can provide a cure?

Uddhava, look straight before you for once. You came to instruct helpless women—we have heard how wise you are. You speak of the attributeless; what is there even to say? You yourself are weighed down by that attributeless burden. By serving manifest Śyāmasundara, we attain all four liberations. We share his world, assume his form, unite with him, and remain forever near. Abandoning this, you speak one thing for another—bee, you are a great enemy. We are fools and you are very clever; what more can be said? You have always wandered for that same business—now find the road. Everyone in Mathurā is grateful and righteous—exceedingly generous, roaming for the welfare of others and speaking gracious words. First the son of Śvaphalka came to Gokula and departed straight for Mathurā. There he dealt with Kaṁsa and here with us poor women, accomplishing both tasks twice over. Now Uddhava has set foot here to teach us the lesson he learned from Hari: there he celebrates love for a maidservant, and here he spreads yoga. We are already on the point of drowning in this ocean of separation. Hear, bee: only the boat of the Lord's manifest play remains our support. Tell us, what young woman has ever seized the attributeless and crossed to the farther shore? Sūr says: neither Akrūra nor the six-footed bee carries any fear in his heart of hurting another.

You bring a message of yoga into Braj. Uddhava, your feet must be exhausted from running back and forth. Who will hear your tale of the attributeless, no matter how carefully you fabricate and refine it? The manifest Mount Sumeru of the Lord stands plainly before us, while you hide it behind a blade of grass. We understand Śyāma's contrivance—you try to divert us with words alone. Never until now have we seen or heard of butter emerging from churning water. Yogis search through the boundless ocean of yoga and do not find him; here Hari becomes manifest through Yaśodā's love and lets himself be bound to the mortar. Be silent and keep your knowledge covered; why increase our separation? Who could hear of lotus-petal-eyed Nandakumāra and not love him? Why speak perversely and make everyone surrender her life? Sūr asks: how can what the Vedas praise only as ‘not this, not this’ befit helpless women?
