‘No one will take offense at you. Bee, you are tasteless; only a true connoisseur understands talk of rasa. A frog may live beside lotuses all its life and never recognize their nectar. A bee, its flying mind bound by love, does not heed what anyone says. A river rushing to meet the ocean tears at banks, roots, and trees. A coward boasts but flees the weapon; the one who stands and fights, says Sūrdās, is the hero.’

‘All your brave talk has grown only inside your own house. You have not fallen helpless beneath separation, mad bee, and so you have not endured it. A lion may starve, but it will not graze upon a blade of grass—that is its nature. Our ears have been nourished on the nectar of the flute; do not feed them yoga’s poison. Uddhava, what teaching can you give us? Apart from Hari, we have no refuge elsewhere. What use, asks Sūrdās, is a boat upon a river too shallow to float it?’

‘Only seeing Śyāma’s face will make us believe, though you make ten million efforts to teach the ways of yoga and meditation. There is nothing clever in this knowledge—how can we accept it? What can be said of this empty sky, and how can it be brought into the heart? We have one mind, and there is one form; absorbed in it, we become like the larva transformed by the bee. Giving you an oath, Sūrdās asks, Uddhava: are the people of Vraja not wise?’

‘Tell me, bee—how can the love of childhood ever be severed? How can I recount the Lord of Vraja’s deeds, which plunder the hidden chambers of my heart even now? That lively gait, enchanting glance, gentle smile, and softly sung melody; Nandanandana’s dancer’s dress, and his playful return from house and forest. I swear by his lotus feet: this message tastes like poison to me. Sleeping or waking, says Sūrdās, Mohana’s form does not leave me for an instant.’

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

‘Uddhava, who could listen to such absurd words of yours? We are simple cowherd women, helpless and foolish—how could yoga suit us? It is like putting collyrium on blind eyes, a nose-ring on one without a nose, asking a shaven head to part its hair, or smearing saffron on a leper’s limbs. What answer can someone receive who seeks a husband’s counsel from the deaf? Such is the justice of the man who teaches yoga to us. Yet if you have brought it to us out of kindness, we accept it upon our heads—people even bow to a coconut, says Sūrdās, though poison lies within.’

‘Still, that Kubjā did well. Hearing news of her again and again, Uddhava, has cooled my heart a little. Hari stole her virtue, ways, name, and form and never gave them back; she did not even know he had stolen her mind, while people lived laughing at her. With only a little sandal paste applied to his body, says Sūrdās, she brought the Lord of Vraja under her sway; this maidservant won the wager from every accomplished woman of the city.’

‘In what sense is Hari the indwelling knower? If he will not meet us at this very hour but keeps extending the appointed time, absorbed in his own pleasures and sitting there idle and without rasa, how can he know another’s pain merely because he rides Garuḍa? The bright coating of his love has peeled away like the skin of a sour mango. Even after all this we are dying from wounded pride, says Sūrdās, while Uddhava goes on drinking his own draught.’

‘Dear Uddhava, do not take it as estrangement. Mathurā is a chamber of lampblack—everyone who enters comes out dark. You are dark, Akrūra the son of Śvaphalka is dark, and the honey-bee is dark. Beside them the jewel-like beauty of the lotus-eyed dark one only grows greater. It is as though he had been drawn from a vat of indigo and then washed in the Yamunā. Through his qualities even Kālindī became dark, says Sūrdās; Śyāma’s qualities are beyond compare.’

‘Everyone seeks his own advantage. Be silent, honey-greedy bee—we have seen you and those others too. Did he send some other message for you to deliver, or only this? You two great sages carry yoga around for young women! Why, then, did Mohana once perform the rāsa with us, if knowledge was already his purpose? Now this saying has settled in our hearts: “Let what must happen, happen.” Pride and grievance have dissolved; what was held in the heart is done. Lord and master of Gokula, says Sūrdās, release the mind’s anxiety now.’

‘As for the message you have brought—what can I do with it? It does no good to Nandanandana’s bond with us. What use are yoga’s techniques to us, even if they are a treasury of great happiness? Our minds have mingled and become one, steeped in affection for beautiful Śyāma. Iron touched by the philosopher’s stone becomes twelve-carat gold; yet where would that former longing go, clinging and drawing together like iron to a magnet? The formless, hopeless, qualityless one is unknown even to the Vedas. By what means, asks Sūrdās, can we now establish acquaintance with it?’

‘We hunger for Kanhā’s play. Wounded by separation, how can we listen to your qualityless Absolute? We cannot even say what it is or for whom this yoga is meant. I fall at your feet—perhaps the people living in that city are mad. Better adorn your own body with collyrium, ornaments, and lovely cloth than give staffs, water-pots, ash, and begging bowls to young women.’ Seeing the gopīs’ firmness, says Sūrdās, Uddhava attained this vow: ‘O treasury of grace, be gracious! You sent me here to study love itself.’

Counting the appointed days, they stared unblinking down the road, yet even then they were not so exhausted. Now your messages of yoga, Uddhava, have made them deeply restless and miserable. ‘How long can one go on praising it as infinitely deep, boundless, and beyond perception, where even the mind cannot go? A wave without water, a painting without a wall—cleverness without a mind: this is the strange new custom Uddhava has introduced into Vraja.
