Uddhava, all your companions are innocent indeed! You will take my words amiss, even after mustering a million ingenious arguments. That Akrūra proved cruel in deed: he filled what was empty, emptied what was full, and drove everything away. That Dark One is dark in body and in his inmost heart, immersed in dark designs. This bee, too, is dark in hue; when sifted through the qualities of the attributeless, we have seen what remains and cast it back. Sūrdās says: why praise anyone as fair when company has dyed him otherwise?

Uddhava, whoever comes to instruct us is our enemy. O bee, night and day we are dying for one glimpse of Prince Kanhā. His enchanting form and the darting glance of his eyes remain lodged like thorns in consciousness. At the call of that flute he stole away our body and mind. We cannot forget the beauty of his lovely body or the sweep of his yellow robe. Words cannot tell the sight of him with his herding-stick upon his shoulder, encircled by the cows in the forest. You are accomplished, while we are separated lovers, yet you prescribe the blundering darkness of closed eyes. How could the snare of liberation catch a heart in which the rain-dark Śyāma dwells? Why have you brought us, Uddhava, these heaps of yogic sorrow? Sūr asks: without the relish of the Beloved, how could we live upon the hard, barren attributeless Absolute?

Uddhava, bring Śyāma here with you. The people of Braj are thirsty cātaka birds dying of thirst—shower upon them the raindrop of Svāti. The lotuses of the cowherd settlement have folded shut; become their sun and make them bloom. Go from here and do not delay; tell him of our condition. If Hari will not come here, Uddhava, then call us to where he is. Sūrdās says: unite us swiftly with the Lord and win renown among the saints.

Dear Uddhava, we first understood yoga on the very day the Lord of Braj departed in the chariot with the son of Śvaphalka. From that day every attachment and delusion fell away, and we forgot affection for sons and husbands. Renouncing the substance of the illusory world, the women of Braj undertook their vow. Their eyes closed, their mouths remained silent, and their bodies were scorched and withered by austerity. They brought into the heart this single form: Nanda's son, the flute-bearer. Yet you describe as yoga some union in which we are to forget even him! Brahmā himself might labor and labor, dying with his life spent, and still never recognize it. Tell us—how far should such yoga be carried when we cannot comprehend your attributeless Absolute? Sūr says: the only true form is Śyāma's own, absorbed within the heart.

Uddhava, where are those joys now? The face our eyes beheld from moment to moment—again and again the mind returns there. Night and day he was beside us—playing, speaking, eating. Sūrdās says: contemplating this divine grace, no words can express what it was.

Tell us, Uddhava: having abandoned us and gone to Mathurā, what greatness has Hari gained? The splendor of all fourteen worlds is his, yet there he lives upon another king's leavings. The scriptures declare that one who performs such duties is merely a servant; serving and serving, he diminishes his life, roaming about and dealing cruelly. You, however, are a supreme saint without guile—do not fabricate anything for us. Sūr asks: what did Śyāma intend in his heart, and what beguiling spell has he brought upon us?

Uddhava, go back, listen once more, and learn what Nandakumāra truly said. This cannot be Śyāma's teaching; it sounds like someone smearing us with ash. Where did he find this light of the attributeless, that he teaches it again and again? Why, only yesterday he adorned our limbs with his own hands. Bewildered by separation from Gopāla, you have lost your store of virtue and wisdom; that is why you babble whatever comes to you, and the fault is not yours. We must have been fashioned solely to endure separation, for our hearts are stone. Sūrdās says: inwardly Mohana alone is the foundation of our life and breath.

Uddhava, what counsel has Gopāla given us? Come, companions—let us all consider together how Nandalāla may be attained. Call every young woman of Braj from indoors and out. Mothers, sit in the lotus posture and close your great eyes! We tried doing everything this six-footed bee prescribed, but nothing came into our hands. Lovely dark Śyāma, lotus-petal-eyed, did not show himself even for an instant. Once again they sank into the ocean of separation, and no one retained awareness of herself. Seeing the gopīs' perfect love, the bee fell silent. Then somewhere they heard the cry of a cātaka bird, and life returned to their ears and bodies. Sūr says: this time the papīhā's call restored the separation-stricken dead to life.

Uddhava, how can those attain the rank of the wise who know nothing of another's pain, though they are called all-knowing? If a fish is separated from water, by what device can anyone keep it alive? Its thirsty life departs for want of water, while someone tells it tales of an ocean of nectar. We are women separated from Śyāmasundara, yet you explain the attributeless to us. These bee-like eyes forsake every other flower and long only for the nectar of his lotus face. Bee, why multiply idle talk by relaying such messages? Uddhava, you have done well to come now. The Potter of destiny had fashioned us as unbaked vessels, and you have brought us here and fired us. Dark Kanhā had already colored us and painted every limb; beneath the shelter of his promised return, even the water of our eyes could not dissolve us. You made Braj the kiln and yoga its fuel, then kindled the fire of remembrance. Our sighs became the bellows, separation the consuming blaze, and hope of his vision kept the wheel turning. Now we are perfectly fired and filled with the water of love; no one can touch or spoil us. Uddhava, even the autumn season has arrived. The cātaka birds that cried for so many days watched the sky and at last received the water of Svāti. Sometimes, holding him in meditation within the heart, we see him raise the flute to his lips and play.
