Uddhava, yoga does not please us. The beautiful rain-dark Śyāma dwells in consciousness—how could anyone make us forget him? Everything you have said may be true, but in our reckoning it is dust. Within this vessel the manifest Lord abides without cease; Śyāma fills it through and through. I fall at your feet: tell Mohana to give the yoga to Kubjā. Bring the Lord's form before us, so that Sūrdās may behold him face to face.

Uddhava, we do not practice the state of yoga. We worship lovely, dark, charming Giridhara, Nandanandana. This body was lovingly adorned with jewels and dressed in ornaments of every kind; do you feel no shame telling us to cover that body with ash? Within the heart the Dark One dwells forever, a peacock crown upon his head. Sūrdās says: consciousness is fastened to him—who then could attend to yoga?

Uddhava, carry this message. People say he is drunk with the nectar of Kubjā, but do not let that make you hesitate even slightly. Sometime let him set foot here again, beautifully dressed and anointed with yellow sandal. By delighting our hearts once more, he will truly become sovereign of all the worlds. If he stays here awhile, he will behold every realm, for in the whole cosmos there is no Vaikuṇṭha apart from Braj, O Hṛṣīkeśa. Who gave Nandanandana the spell that made him abandon Braj and wander in foreign lands? Has he seen another country containing mother Yaśodā and his beloved Rādhikā? As she spoke these words, nothing remained of the dark-complexioned girl; every trace of outward awareness disappeared. In that very instant the coral-lipped, tender-hearted Mohanalāla appeared beautifully before her. Who was Uddhava now, what was the unbearable fever of separation, and who the lord of the royal city? What knowledge had been spoken, by whom and to whom, and who had sent instruction? She saw only his gentle face, the air filled with the flute's music, his hair mottled with cow-dust; she saw his graceful actor's gait and enchanting gestures as he entered from the forest. Overwhelmed, she ran to her beloved in trembling haste, while he wiped her eyes with lotus hands. Touching her wilted lotus face, he gazed upon its singular beauty. Sūr says: Soma and Sanaka, Indra and the Unborn, Sarasvatī, the Vedas and Maheśa—and even Śeṣa with all his mouths—sing this eternal play, the circling movement of every rasa.

Uddhava, Hari displayed affection and stole away the heart; he cast those restless eyes and dyed every limb with love. We honor you as a supremely holy friend and noble man of the Yadu clan. At morning tell us one true thing, speaking what you know in your heart. His eyes are autumn lotuses and his brows the bow of Kāma—how can those live whose breasts have been struck by his cruel arrows? Mohana stays in Mathurā and sends Braj a message of yoga; why did the earth not tremble when such instruction was spoken to young women? You are one of Śyāma's wise men—look within and consider: our beloved and husband has become a king and taken a chosen woman. His tender hands placed the sweet flute at his lips and sounded its melody; nectar spread everywhere and filled the air—what other thing could the ears hear? The deer and the doe-eyed women became alike: enthralled by sound and poisoned glance, neither recognized the hunter who would kill them. He abandoned the cattle and departed, yet retained the celebrated name Gopāla. Tell us plainly—is this the noble way proclaimed by scripture?

Bee, everyone knows perfectly well how you and your friend are fashioned: both of you are expert in these virtues. Seasoned thieves, deceivers at heart—you are black, and he is black as well. You seize a person's entire treasure and pursue your own pleasure, no matter what becomes of anyone else. A supreme miser may preserve a little wealth, but not even a little life survives your taking. Sūr says: whoever gives you his love brings ruin upon himself.

Bee, they call you exceedingly wise, but how could your judgment ever serve us when you know nothing of our need? As you are, so is your master—the two of you share one color and one disposition. First he made us drink the nectar of love; afterward you expound yoga. A bee once lodged in the nectar of a lotus and paid no heed when the sun set and its petals closed. Sūr says: without Hari, that same fate is ours here—we wring our hands and repent, enclosed by love.

Bee, the message you speak is a thorn. Since you left Hari's feet and wandered away, you have become confused and forgotten loving devotion. This cannot be an utterance from his gentle, beautiful mouth, though you drive it like a spike into our hearts. Would your face not redden to pronounce it, had you not entirely lost your aim? There lies the great city of Mathurā; here lies the bank of the Yamunā. There remember the majestic four-armed Lord; here the youthful darling of Nanda. The lofty matters you have spoken are not suited to the people of Braj. Sūr says: Śyāma sported with the gopīs here, placing the roots of his arms around their necks.

Bee, is it we whom you presume to instruct? Again and again you sing the saga of knowledge before the helpless women of Braj. Without Nandanandana, why tell this deceitful tale and breed distaste in us? Tell us: how can one who beautifies his body with garlands and sandal paste attain the truth you preach? Look and consider within yourself—you are called a clever connoisseur. After roaming among all the flowers and draining them of nectar, why let yourself be imprisoned in the lotus? Lotus eyes, lotus hands, lotus feet, and lotus face delight us. Sūrdās asks: when the Lord himself is a bee in love with that lotus beauty, why urge us to feed upon anything else?

Who is this Gopāla, where does he live, and what acquaintance have we with him? Who sent a message by you, and to whom have you come speaking? A bee flew in and perched here by its own whim, knowing well how to savor nectar. Whether this vine grows or withers, what gain or loss is that to him? First, in the forest, he played modes and melodies upon his flute and stole the deer's mind—like a hunter who wins its trust, makes it helpless, then draws a deadly arrow and kills. He slew Pūtanā while drinking the milk she gave; he struck Bāli while concealed and dispossessed the generous Bali. He brought down Śūrpaṇakhā and Tāḍakā. Sūr says: such has always been dark Śyāma's way.

By sending this bee, your all-pervading fullness has proved deficient. Gazing upon the faces and bodies of city women, you forgot two things: Braj's love and your own perfection—neither remained. Then a third path plainly appeared when you embraced the hunchbacked woman. This man is indeed a supreme saint, yet you deceived him; he never harbored such a thought. Whatever you said, he heard and obeyed, setting out with the bundle of yogic methods upon his head. What can Sūrdās say of your lordship? Your love has spread beautifully indeed! May you enjoy millions of royal pleasures, since you cannot remain even one moment in the cowherd settlement.

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

Bee, where did you study this policy? Every tale you tell runs contrary to society, Veda, revelation, and sacred books. Braj is his birthplace and Yaśodā his mother—what offense made him abandon them? He left women of the highest family, limitless virtue, and beauty, and went chasing after a maidservant. How will rustic women understand the profound yogic absorption that is the path of revelation and sages? If he is truly all-pervading and beyond attributes, what injury could our reproach do him? Stay, bee—give up deceit, self-interest, and your multitude of elaborate words. Sūr says: having once beheld Śyāma's embodied form, we guard this bond in thought, deed, and speech.
