‘Uddhava, if Kanhā does not come now, know within your own heart that we shall not endure this much suffering. Go ask whose son he is—what answer will he give then? He ate and played in our company; what has become of that bond? How long can the jewel of Gokula, now a resident of Mathurā, keep telling lies? We wish to send a written letter now, but no message reaches there. Since our darling no longer grazes them, these cows have abandoned grazing. If after all this Sūrdās’s Lord will not meet us, he will repent afterward.’

‘Uddhava, two hard choices have fallen upon us. If we live, wise fool, the body is robbed of beauty; if we die, whose virtues will we sing? Śuka, Sanaka, and the others sing those virtues, while those who run beside him share his play. Holding hope for the promised time, the righteous beauties of Vraja preserve contentment. Every well-born friend is dark with love, yet all are full of separation. The boat for crossing this ocean of grief is the face that bears the flute. Day and night Love’s great maddened elephant roams without a goad; unless that lion appears, says Sūrdās, it will burn down every dwelling.’

‘Uddhava, many days have passed with us turned away from the lotus feet. Deprived of sight, miserable and poor, we endure disaster every moment. At night love’s pain is extreme; neither house nor forest lets the mind hold courage. By day we watch the road, while a river of tears flows from the heart. Counting only the hoped-for appointed time of his return, each breath diminishes. How can a woman in separation endure so much separation, asks Sūrdās?’
