First bow to Nanda and give him all my news; then go to the cowherd Vṛṣabhānu and learn how everyone fares. Meet Śrīdāmā and all the other cowherds on my behalf. Carry my message of well-being and dispel the gopīs’ sorrow. A counselor of mine dwells in the forest; meet that one and you will find joy. Be attentive, and bow your head there for me: a supremely beautiful youth, with great restless eyes, flute in hand, peacock plume upon the head, yellow cloth and a forest garland upon the breast. Do not fear the dense woods—the goddess of Vraja keeps watch. That presence dwells forever in Vṛndāvana and is never far away. Śyāma thus told Uddhava all the love within his heart; by his grace, says Sūrdās, he sent him forth into the whole way of Vraja.

Tell them: ‘Nanda has grown hard-hearted. He left us two brothers in another’s house as though entrusting a deposit. From our earliest days he raised us to manhood and showed us every happiness; when we went to graze the cows, he would run for miles behind us. Now Vasudeva and Devakī tell us we are their own sons—as though destiny had not placed us in Mother Yaśodā’s lap! What use is this kingdom? How can the city’s every pleasure bring happiness? We shall soothe Vraja and return today or tomorrow,’ says Sūrdās.

Just then Upāṅga’s son arrived. Between the two friends there was not the slightest distance; again and again Kṛṣṇa drew him into his arms. His beautiful body so resembled Śyāma’s that Hari looked upon him and regretted: ‘If only a form like this possessed the understanding suited to it, then sending him to Vraja would bring him back transformed. Before the women he will set forth the words of yoga where love’s poetry shines.’ Knowledge sat firm in Uddhava’s heart, says Sūrdās, and so he would teach yoga to the young women.

Hari began to speak of his love for Gokula: ‘Listen, son of Upāṅga—the joy-giving people of Vraja never leave my memory. My heart longs to go there this very moment; here my mind cannot settle. The cowherds, the dear cowherd boys, and the cows wander grazing in the forest—I suffer greatly for having left them. Where is the stealing of butter? Where is Yaśodā lovingly calling, “Son, come eat”?’ Uddhava heard Śyāma’s words, says Sūrdās, yet remained enclosed within his own discipline.

The Lord of the Yadus saw him and smiled: ‘The very thought that remained in my mind has now come to pass.’ He began to reveal it in words and unfolded the tale of love. ‘Listen, Uddhava: remembrance of Vraja does not leave me. Sleeping at night, walking, or waking, my mind fastens on nothing else. Nanda, Yaśodā, every woman and man of Vraja—my life is there. Hear me, son of Upāṅga: I speak the very way of rasa. Rādhikā’s love never departs from Śyāma’s heart,’ says Sūrdās.

‘Friend, listen to this one thing. Remembering the gopīs among those vine-covered bowers, I repent. Where is Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter now, she of the supremely beautiful form? When the rasa of the rāsa dance returns to memory, my heart grows still more distraught. No worldly bond remains forever; all the rest passes away as false. Hear this from me,’ says Sūrdās’s Lord, ‘I have a bond with that one alone.’

‘Uddhava, go swiftly to Vraja. Recite my remembered message and quench the burning of my beloveds. Desire is the fire, their cotton-soft bodies its fuel, and the sighs of separation the wind; only the water of their eyes has kept them from turning to ash. Until now that water has somehow kept their bodies barely conscious—but without reassurance, how can those women hold fast to courage? What more can I compose for you, my virtuous and discerning friend? Consider wisely, says Sūrdās: how can fish live without water?’

Desire swelled in Uddhava’s mind. Knowing the Lord of the Yadus to be speaking true yoga, he lifted his eyes toward the sky: ‘You are sending me to women, telling me to write down and explain yoga!’ Within himself he praised the teaching and judged the pleasures of love to be false. He accepted the command upon his head, taking the Lord’s word as final. ‘When the Lord himself sends me to Gokula,’ says Sūrdās, ‘how could I answer otherwise?’

Kubjā said to Uddhava: ‘Listen to one message while you are going to Gokula, and afterward tell those women one thing from me. Knowing his duty to mother and father, Kanhā came to Mathurā. Śyāma is neither your lover nor Yaśodā’s son. Think it through in your own minds: what good did you do? He was a child, while you infatuated cowherd women brought him wholly under your power. Yaśodā tormented him over butter, and all of you joined together to bind him without a trace of pity. And what Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter did—you all know it in your hearts. From shame at this alone Mohana left Vraja; why, then, do you grieve?’ Hearing these words again and again, Śyāma hung his head. Caught between Kubjā here and the loving cowherd women there, says Sūrdās, he could find no answer.

‘Look—a chariot stands at Nanda’s gate! Friend, has the son of Sūraphala come again?’ A deep suspicion entered their hearts: ‘He carried away our very life before; why has he come now? I think, friend, that he has hastened here to show us mercy.’ In that interval Upāṅga’s son came and granted them sight of him. Recognizing him as Hari’s friend, they made themselves wholly composed. With great warmth they bowed, and all joined their palms. He was just as they had heard—supremely clever, yet innocent in understanding. ‘By receiving your sight we count our birth fulfilled.’ Meeting Uddhava, says Sūrdās, they found joy as a fish finds water.
