‘How can one trust the people of Mathurā? One thing is upon their lips and another within; they compose and send letters saying something else again. A crow raises the cuckoo’s child, feeding it with loving devotion; when spring comes and it calls “kuhū, kuhū,” in the end it flies away and joins its own kind. A bee takes the flower’s fragrance and returns for no further concern. As long as men possess Śyāma’s dark body and ways, asks Sūrdās, why attach oneself to them?’

‘Hari has returned after studying statecraft. Bee, do you speak from understanding—have you received any news? He was exceedingly clever even before, and then displayed affection. Knowing his intellect had grown still greater, he sent a message of yoga to young women. Friend, people of earlier days were good; they ran about for others’ welfare. But those who walk away stealing the mind can never be brought back. How can those who make others abandon proper conduct practice policy themselves? All royal duty exists, says Sūrdās, so that subjects may not be tormented.’

‘On hearing the course of yoga, fire entered my limbs. We were already smoldering within the body; you came and blew upon the flame. Yoga for us and pleasure for Kubjā—who taught him such a lesson? I have heard a strange new tale: the lion abandons the elephant and tears at grass. The line of karma cannot be erased once destiny has drawn it. Yet upon the one who receives Hari’s grace, says Sūrdās, every perfection descends.’

‘Uddhava, we have understood your knowledge. In the end, what does a cowherd know of the play of royal policy? All of us are ignorant; only Kubjā is wise, for his heart has accepted her. He does not return for shame, as though Kanhā himself felt embarrassed. Uddhava, go, take beautiful beloved Śyāma by the arm and bring him. Let him marry a hundred thousand and keep ten hunchbacks—in the end Kanhā is ours. Friend, say nothing more; allow Mādhava to come. Whenever Sūrdās’s Lord meets us, we shall laugh and laugh with him.’

‘Not one comparison can contain these eyes. Poets have repeated their similes through the ages, yet no one has spoken after truly remembering. They call them cakora birds that cannot live without the moon-face—but no, for those birds fly away. Separated from the closed lotus of Hari’s face, why would bees remain sitting empty? If they are pleasure-giving khañjana birds, why do they not grow restless, spread their wings, and fly toward the battle of love? If they are deer, why do they not flee when Uddhava comes as a hunter to bind them, running into the dense forest where no pursuer follows? Without the eyes of Vraja, what are eyes, when pain increases every instant? Only the fish comparison holds a little, says Sūrdās: filled with water, they never abandon it.’

‘Gazing upon Hari’s face, these eyes forgot to blink. From that day the stars of my eyes have gone naked like sky-clad ascetics. Casting aside the veil, they wander uncovered through the streets day and night. Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter is deeply soiled. Her inner body and garment were once dampened by Hari’s sweat, and from longing for that touch she will not wash her sari. She stays with face lowered and does not look up, like a gambler exhausted after losing his stake. Her hair hangs loose and her face has withered like a lotus struck by frost. Hearing Hari’s message, one already half-dead by separation was naturally slain again, then scorched once more by the bee. Without dark Śyāma, says Sūrdās, all the women of Vraja live like this—each one a darling of the dark Lord.
