‘Uddhava, Kubjā bears fortune upon her brow: he has made the hunchback his chief queen and gives renunciation to us. All the women of Vraja wander writhing while that maidservant enjoys quick-won married bliss. Friend, what a well-matched pair they make—she the swan and he the crow! Drums proclaim through a servant-girl’s house that Śyāma is dyed in love. Laughing, she plays a year-round Holī with the lotus-eyed one. You have come to plant the vine of yoga after cutting down love’s garden. Clever Sūrdās’s Lord has abandoned sugarcane, friend, and begun chewing fire.’

‘Uddhava, now I understand: every simile assigned to Nandanandana’s limbs has proved exactly just. His curling locks are bees, circling and filling the jasmine with their swarms; when they find it drained of rasa, the deceivers delay no longer and abandon it. The moon of his face leaves the water-lily standing before it and will not bend toward her from his harsh chariot; without attachment or love, the water-lily is finally slain by frost. Day and night the cātaka serves his dark-cloud body until its tongue wears away from calling, yet the witless bird’s mouth, says Sūrdās, does not receive even one drop.’

‘Uddhava, we are utterly orphaned, like a fly cut off from honey when the Lord of Vraja is gone. From childhood we were joined to the pain and nectar of his lips. Then Akrūra the hunter came and effortlessly broke that bond and carried him away. In the instant it took to rub water from our blinking eyes, Hari had gone far into the distance. What restraint could have stopped him at that moment, even if we had thrown ourselves beneath the chariot’s wheels? We spent all our days in the company of a miser and never enjoyed our treasure. Fate fashioned and preserved him, says Sūrdās, only for union with Kubjā’s face.’

‘Uddhava, consider the condition of Vraja; only afterward unfold your accomplishment and tale of yoga. Reflect in your mind upon the purpose for which Nandanandana sent you. Do you know how far the highest good lies from separation, or do you not? You are his own servant and Śyāma’s friend, forever remaining near him. Why repeatedly grasp foam for support when someone is drowning? How can I make the mind forget that exquisitely lovely face? I sacrifice every technique of yoga and every kind of liberation to that flute. When beautiful dark-cloud Śyāma lives within the heart, how can the qualityless one enter at your word? Scripture celebrates the two eyes as bearing the same nature, yet the cakora distinguishes between them: the moon is beloved and the sun an enemy.
