Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

‘Uddhava, you did well to come. By repeating these things amid our grief, you have at least made the people of Vraja laugh. What need has he now for Vṛndāvana’s joy or a meal of curd and rice? Kanhā is enamored of the hunchback; the two have become a single aim. Send him our peacock crown, flute, and yellow cloth, and take in return his matted locks, yogic seals, ashes, and begging bowl. He is great and you are his friend, so injustice comes easily to you. All of Śyāma’s wisdom is excellent, says Sūrdās—like his faithful love for Yamunā’s water.’

‘Uddhava, I understand your hidden secret. Claiming to know every heart, you wander carrying a tied bundle of deception. His yellow banner is the yellow garment; the red banner is adulterous Kubjā. The white banner of truth flies over Vraja, yet for the sake of disgrace, Uddhava, that other one is dear. There his mind delights in love and affection, while here everyone observes vows of virtue. False speech and shameless babbling—these two, says Sūrdās, are Uddhava’s peculiar distinction.’

‘Uddhava, the heart follows what it loves. A moth burns in the lamp and circles back again and again. The cakora remains upon the earth, bee, while the moon wanders in the sky; fix your meditation upon Hari so that it does not move here or there for an instant. The frog lives forever within water yet never goes near the lotus. A bee can bore its home through wood, yet becomes bound within lotus petals. Rain falls day and night, filling the earth beyond measure, yet the cātaka cries every moment for a single drop of Svāti rain. The porcupine rejects nectar-fruit and longs for bitter cucumber. So too Kṛṣṇa is enamored of the hunchback, says Sūrdās, and feels ashamed before the gopīs.’

‘Uddhava, I am truly burned by Hari’s thorns. He sports in bower after bower through the forest, forgetting the foolishness of what he left behind. Seeing the shade beneath fresh roots, he once ran to us in Vraja and gathered us into his arms. How long can I describe the love we shared upon the Yamunā’s banks? Both eyes remain intoxicated by the sight of him taking our arms and swinging with us in the forest. That memory pricks within the heart, says Sūrdās—the garland of flowers he gave me.’

‘Bee, we are not those vines whom you abandon without love after playing in their flower-rasa. From childhood we raised Balavīra’s brother, nourished him, and gave him water to drink. Rising in the morning without the beloved’s touch, these blossoms suffer constant harm. These creepers wandering in Vṛndāvana have become entwined around the dark tamāla. Gopāla the bee revels in the fragrance and rasa of our flowers of love. The wind of yoga cannot make them waver; they cling beside the branch of his form. The lotus-eyed lover, says Sūrdās, does not abandon their pollen within his heart.’

Who broke stars from the sky, brought them home, and set them down, Mother? Who strung a garland of madmen and made it with her own hands? ‘Bee, understand before you speak. Drunk on honey, you are senseless—why swagger so? A mediator must speak the truth that lies between both sides, the very form of truth. Justice should not be decided by looking at faces and asking who is pauper and who king. You intend one thing and another leaves your mouth, a slanderer and libertine. Teaching yoga to the young women of Vraja, you have brought your fame and spread it wide. We knew the bee as a connoisseur of pleasure—where did he learn yoga’s method? Some supreme guru shaved the poor creature’s head and smeared ash over head, hands, and face. Fate made this injustice, yet even now you do not understand: whoever digs a well for another’s harm falls into that well himself. Hari is said to be the indwelling knower—to whom shall I cry out?
