‘Uddhava, today we have become greatly fortunate. As the wind carries a flower’s fragrance to a loving bee, so you have brought him near. Great joy has increased through every limb; this happiness cannot be cast away. Seeing you, all sorrow was forgotten, for we took you to be beautiful Śyāma. Yet as eyes behold an image within a mirror where the hand cannot reach, just so we met the dark one through you, says Sūrdās, and forgot separation’s pain.’

‘Friend, a letter has come from Mathurā! Śyāma wrote it and sent it in Uddhava’s hand—come and listen, Mother!’ Each ran from her own home and pressed the letter to her breast. Tears filled their eyes; the writing could not be seen, while neither love nor pain was extinguished. ‘What can I do? Gokula is empty; without Hari nothing gives delight. Through what fault did dark Śyāma forget to remember us, Lord of Sūrdās?’

‘Hear Hari’s message, gopīs. Enter samādhi and contemplate the Lord within—this is his instruction. He is imperceptible, imperishable, complete, and present in every vessel. Certain of this, meditate upon him with a purified lotus-mind. By this means you will abandon separation, and Brahman will come to meet you. Without knowledge of reality there is no liberation—the Vedas sing and proclaim it.’ Hearing Mādhava’s unbearable message, the gopīs lamented. Who can redirect separation, asks Sūrdās, while the eyes pour so much water?

‘Bee, having gained excellent wisdom, you have lost your mind. Yoga will make us the laughingstock of Vraja—keep it hidden. You wander displaying the Self-delighting one who pervades every vessel, carrying the qualityless bundle beneath your arm, but there is no customer here. Only one who has endured love’s pain knows it. You are without rasa—how could you know so much? Ask the one who has suffered and see. You are a great messenger from a great place, so your intellect too is called great. Six-legged bee, says Sūrdās, you roam about calling filth itself fragrant pollen.’

‘Bee, we hear this tale of knowledge from the very mouth that once poured flute-nectar toward Hari every instant, where days passed in telling the circle of friends about the rasa of his play. Fate has reversed everything before our eyes, and now a six-legged creature instructs us there. When the darling treasury of rasa is present, why should the mind become entangled elsewhere? Some cheat mutters of a formless thing from his mouth and confuses understanding. We honor the essence of scripture, yet it is not right for the mind to forget the touch of Nandanandana’s lotus hands upon face and breast. Every beauty of Vraja is wise in her own way and cannot be shaken. Traveling toward the ocean of Śyāma’s rasa, says Sūrdās, she does not abandon that condition.’

Uddhava came to teach yoga. The Lord of Vraja sent him bearing horn, ashes, begging bowl, and yogic seals. ‘If yoga was written for the gopīs, why did he once perform the treasury of rāsa with us? Why did he not teach knowledge then, while giving us the corrected nectar of his lips to drink? Hearing the flute, we went into the forest, forgetting children, husbands, and homes. Having abandoned Śyāma’s company, says Sūrdās, he should be the one left regretting within his mind.’

‘Uddhava, separation prepares love. Cloth takes no dye without first receiving the mordant; once treated, it absorbs the rasa. When the pot’s body burns in the kiln, it can afterward be filled with nectar. When a seed splits the body and sends out a shoot, it yields a hundred fruits. When a warrior endures arrows face-to-face in battle, he reaches the sun’s chariot. On the watery path of love for Gopāla, says Sūrdās, no one fears suffering.’

‘Uddhava, go tell him this much. All the beloved women say to Hari: “Remain in Mathurā during these days.” You yourself see that now the moon burns like the blazing sun. How could supremely tender, beautiful Śyāma, Nanda’s son, endure it? Sweet peacocks and cuckoos have grown terribly harsh, calling through forest and grove. Cows and calves wander from street to street like lions and wolves. Seats, food, and clothing are like serpent-poison, and houses with their stores are the same. Wherever one turns, unbearable Love roams from tree to tree with a hundred bows. You are a supremely gentle-hearted holy man and know every circumstance. How can we call Śyāma to Vraja, asks Sūrdās, before this calamity passes?’
