Now the love of that foreigner stands revealed. Then you bloomed with delight, calling ‘Kanhā, Kanhā!’—now accept the fruit. Why did you place your entire treasure into another's hands? That great deceiver abandoned Mathurā and made his home upon the ocean shore. Now a terrible burning has arisen through the body, and doubt has swollen in the mind. Sūrdās says: the gopīs grew overwhelmed, and rain poured from their eyes.

Hari has not come, Mother; it seems this whole birth will pass like this. Watching the road, day after day goes by, each equal to an age. Companion, the voices of cātaka and cuckoo no longer enter my ears. Sandal paste and millions of moonbeams feel like the blazing sun. Young women adorned with ornaments seem like warriors advancing upon the heart, while Kāma's terrible arrows pierce like those of Arjuna. Sūr lies upon a bed of shafts, yet these restless breaths will not depart. Know only this: they remain caught until the promised limit, like the sun held upon its southern course.

O Lord of Braj, through separation from you the river of our eyes has risen in flood. Its proud waters carry away both banks of the blinking eyelids. The round eyeballs are new boats unable to move; the swelling current sinks them. The wind of upward-rising sighs drives fierce waves that break the tilaka-trees. Mud of collyrium soils the banks between lips and cheeks. Whatever travelers were there—hands, feet, mouth, and speech—remain exhausted and stranded where they stood. Lord of Ramā, there is no other remedy; without your vision we cannot live even an instant. All Gokula is drowning in the water of tears—Sūr implores you to seize and lift it like the Boar who raised the earth.

My eyes proved ignorant. They gazed upon a single limb of Hari, and meanwhile every other sight was lost. They blundered like a thief who enters a house filled with treasure but steals none of the hoard. When dawn transformed the scene, they repented: the wealth had been released from their own hands. Why did they not remain from the first where his face stood full before them? Sūr says: as their power of seeing and their greed increase, a new pain arises.

Go, cuckoo-companion, and listen to my counsel. Fly once around the place where the Lord of the Yadus, jewel of the world, resides. You are noble-born and discerning and know the anguish of a separated woman. Sit in his garden and call in your gentle voice; purchase my words and make me your servant. In exchange for restoring these lives you will gain renown—preserve for yourself that vast treasure of glory. I have searched the whole earth in every way and found no other benefactor. At his gate cry openly that helpless women have come, surrounded by the enemy Kāma. Bring Sūr's Lord back to Braj, O cuckoo, and everyone will sing your praise.

Mother, will no one restrain this moon? He is fiercely angry with us, though he brings joy to the night-lotus. Where is the vanished new-moon night, where the sun, where the thief of darkness, and where the black clouds? He refuses to move; his chariot stands exhausted and still while he burns the bodies of separated women. I condemn the mountain, the ocean, and the serpent, and curse the hard tortoise that supports them. I bless the goddess of old age—why do Rāhu and Ketu not seize him with force? As a fish without water writhes and burns, so the girls of Braj are scorched. Sūrdās pleads: Lord, unite us swiftly with enchanting Madanagopāla.

The separated woman is utterly restless and distressed, yet the enemy of earth-biting serpents will not devour the moon. Look, Mother—my eyes have defeated the clouds. Out of season, night and day, both pupils rain forever full of water. The wind of rising sighs blows fiercely and casts down countless trees of sorrow. Struck by this rainy season, the bird-words have taken shelter in the house of my mouth. Drop after drop falls upon the bodice, turning black where it mingles with collyrium—as though a dark stream ran apart through Śiva's little leaf-hut.
