‘Stay back, honey-intoxicated bee! What shall I do with the qualityless one? May our Kanhā live! You roll low in the mud of pollen, wasting away and unable to master yourself. Reeling again and again from intoxicating sap, why uncover what should remain untouched? You think we are like your flowers: every dark visitor who arrives delays with each for a watch or an hour. We have offered everything to beautiful dark Śyāma, the lotus-petaled-eyed darling of Yaśodā and Nanda. From whom else, Uddhava, asks Sūrdās, could we now borrow anything?’

‘Why block the straight royal road? Listen, bee—why obstruct it with the thorns of the qualityless doctrine? Did Kubjā train and send you, or did dark-cloud Śyāma himself say this? Search the Vedas, Purāṇas, and every sacred tradition: is yoga prescribed anywhere for young women? Why complain about one who cannot tell buttermilk from milk? Akrūra carried away the principal, says Sūrdās, and now Uddhava has come to settle the interest.’

‘Everyone offers explanations in words, but no one tells us the way by which we may meet Mādhava. Though we devise countless efforts and exhaust ourselves, trying to turn elsewhere, our stubborn eyes still delight in seeing no other. Day and night the tongue abandons every song except the name of the beloved of our life. Bound by love for the Lord, says Sūrdās, we can only say whatever rises to our lips.’

‘From what country does the qualityless one come? Bee, explain with a smile. I swear I ask sincerely, not in mockery. Who is his father? Whom do they call his mother? Who is his wife and who his maid? What is his color, what clothing does he wear, and for what rasa does he long? Whoever answers shall receive the proper reward for what he has done.’ Hearing this, the cheated man fell silent, says Sūrdās, all his cleverness destroyed.

‘No room remains within the mind. While Nandanandana abides there, how can another be brought into the heart? Walking, looking, awake by day, dreaming in sleep at night—that dark form never moves from the heart for even an instant. Uddhava tells many stories and displays worldly advantages, but what can I do? The vessel of the body is full of love; an ocean cannot enter it. Dark body, lotus face, exquisitely gentle smile—for such a form, says Sūrdās, the thirsty eyes are dying.’

‘Every person of Vraja observes the vow of Śyāma. We know no one besides Gopāla; to name another would be infidelity. Why have you brought yoga’s bundle and unloaded this burden upon the cowherd settlement? Carry it far away to Kāśī, where the precious merchandise can be sold. Our circle is single-hearted and will not hear this message of yours. How can we forget the path of rasa Hari practiced with us? No one here even asks for great liberation, though it contains all four aims of life. I give myself, says Sūrdās, to the enchanting embodied form of my Lord.’

He has come to teach us yoga—does that seem to you the act of Hari’s friend? A person is known by what he does. This one is a mine of crooked deceit. Mother, know with certainty: he is not Hari’s friend. Where is the rasa of the rāsa, and where the muttering of yoga? The distance between them speaks for itself. Why have you all gone mad, asks Sūrdās, preserving this man’s honor?’

‘Such a man is called a messenger! One wonder comes to me: how can he utter these things? Speaking harsh words, burning us with each repetition, he throws away his own dignity. He praises himself, says Sūrdās, and claims victory even in defeat.’

‘Whatever nature has entered a creature’s limbs remains. Though a dog’s tail be treated ten million times, no one can make it straight. A crow never abandons the food it chose from the hour of birth. ‘If these eyes may behold that form again, Uddhava, then count this youth and this birth truly fulfilled. His lovely darting eyes are like restless khañjana birds, delighting our hearts—beautiful lotus, deer, and fish together, white and red and dark. Gem-set earrings shine at his ears and cast their luster across his rounded cheeks, as though the sun, reflected in his crown, had searched and found its own image there. Flute at his lips, formidable brows arched, he stands in the triple-bending pose; crown and garland descend over his breast like the Gaṅgā plunging from a blue mountain peak to earth. Who can describe his other dress, each limb streaked with saffron? It can only be seen; the tongue cannot tell it, says Sūrdās, for looking is another thing entirely.’

‘Our eyes meditate upon Nandanandana; take your instruction where knowledge of the qualityless is wanted. Brahmā counted the lines of his tender hands and fixed the limit of every virtue. Yet after all this, your bitter words strike as though killing the very life. His face shines like ten million moons, his earrings like ten million suns; ten million Loves are sacrificed to his beauty when one offers the gift of sight. His brows have the grace of ten million bent bows, his glances their fitted arrows; his curved lotus eyes release ten million shafts. His neck is a conch, a jeweled necklace rests on his broad jewel-like breast; long-armed and generous, his lotus hands are treasuries of nectar. Who can describe the beauty of yellow cloth upon his dark body? It is lightning of overwhelming brilliance dancing within a blue cloud. Meeting Gopāla, connoisseur of the rāsa, we drank honey from his lips. Apart from such a form, asks Sūrdās, who else can protect us?’

‘Uddhava has come to give us excellent doctrine! Come, wise women, hear it all—do not let him alone win the badge of fame. He tells us to abandon clothing, ornaments, home, and every affection; to wear matted hair upon the head and ashes over every limb while he teaches the tasteless qualityless one. To my mind, he wanders about giving young women the suffering of their beloved to drink. Śyāma’s arrows have reduced us to cages of bone; now the heart no longer grasps fear of life. When a nature has entered the very breath, what thought of good or bad can alter it? What comfort comes to the exhausted victim, asks Sūrdās, when someone massages a body already struck by a snake?’

‘He made love, then placed a knife at our throats, like a hunter who deceitfully scatters grain and afterward does harm. The flute’s sweetness coaxed us near; the peacock crown became his dazzling snare. His sidelong glance flashed like flame, and once caught we could no longer master our bodies. Leaving us writhing, he departed for Mathurā and never again inquired after us. A bird that has left that wish-fulfilling tree, says Sūrdās, will not sit upon its branch again.’
