Night and day our eyes pour rain. Since Śyāma departed, the monsoon has remained forever upon us. Collyrium will never stay upon the eyes; breast and cheeks have turned black with its streams. Listen, companion: the bodice never dries, for channels of water flow between the breasts. Sūrdās cries: Lord, the flood has risen—come rescue Gokula. How long can I describe it, beautiful rain-dark Śyāma? Our distress has become unbearably great.

Two fine bees, greedy for the nectar in the lotus chamber, remain anxious. Dwelling beside the golden vine and its fresh leaves, they start and leap forth. Sometimes their wings contract; they fall silent while a stream of water pours. Sometimes they tremble in utter astonishment and forget even their hunger. In the center of the moon's orb he sits enthroned, every limb filled with nectar. Despite so many efforts, these bees cannot survive; they writhe without the lovely voice from his mouth. Seeing parrot, tortoise, cuckoo, and the serpent clan, they grow still in meditation upon his features. Sūr asks: Lord, why do you not come yourself? What harm could befall you merely from letting us see you?

Kāma, you have an appointed end for everyone—do not kill this beautiful woman. This is a necklace of pearls, not the Gaṅgā; these fresh ornaments serve her rain-cloud-dark beloved. The mark upon her forehead is not the moon. The knot of her hair is not the thousand-hooded lord of serpents. Fool, this is not ash or the moon-child upon her brow; her body is anointed with musk and sandal. This black bodice is not an elephant hide—look carefully; where do you see Nandin and Śiva's hosts? Sūrdās says: Lord, without your vision, Kāma attacks us stubbornly and by force.

Cuckoo, let us hear Hari's voice through yours. Uproot Śyāma from Mathurā and bring him back to this Braj. The wise give body, mind, wealth, and every possession to one who seeks their shelter. Good fame is purchased in exchange for a word—why will you not buy it today? Perform some kindness for another; that alone is the work of the discerning. Sūrdās says: tell the Lord that at this very season spring reigns from forest to forest.

Mother, where has Nanda's Mohana remained? That form, enchanter of the whole world, will not leave my heart. Without Kanhā, who tends the calves and who returns carrying the full milking pails? Who eats butter among the cowherd women, surrounded by all his other companions and herds? The more I remember him, companion, the more deeply he enchants the mind. Sūrdās asks: parted from our Lord, how can these loving hearts remain alive?

The supremely clever, beautiful ocean of joy was the body's beloved gatekeeper. Holding the staff of his beauty, companion, Nandakumāra kept watch every day. Without him, the heart's house now lies open to the roaming enemy of Śiva, Kāma. Sorrow enters; the mind commands it to stop, but it will not obey when it sees the dwelling empty. Tears and sighs emerge from within, reflecting and acting without the slightest shame. At night, before the eyelid-doors can close for even an instant, the moon shoots hundreds upon hundreds of arrows. Without Hari, such has become my state and there is no remedy. Sūrdās pleads: come meet me swiftly, charming Nandakumāra.

We hear that two whole monsoons have passed. One thing wounds us again and again: Śyāma said he would come. Then we gave our love; now we have begun to reap the fruit of our own deed. Companion, grief makes us wish to leave for a place where no one ever hears his name. He abandoned us in a single moment and devoted himself to increasing his love for Mathurā. Sūr asks: why would he remember us now, when those lovely palaces please him?

What use is regret now? While we played, ate, laughed, and remained limb against limb, we did not recognize Śyāma's worth. Who is Vasudeva, whose treasure was the child, and who stood witness when they carried him here? Uddhava, explain that agreement to us—you are exceedingly wise. This is no mere tale of crow and cuckoo; the color of deceit had entered his heart. Sūr says: when the sovereign season of spring arrived, he went and joined the lineage he recognized as his own.

Without Mādhava, companion, everything in Rādhā's body has turned into its opposite. The beauty that put the moon to shame has hidden away, leaving her face blemished. Even her eyes have wrung every last drop of loveliness from the autumn lotus. As refined gold changes when touched by flame, so the substance of her body has become. Her enchanting back, once like the smooth leaf of a plantain, now seems to have folded inward. Sūr says: Hari has stolen every treasure and given calamity upon calamity in return.

Companion, for what reason would Hari come? He is a king and you are cowherds—calling him only exposes the difference. A golden, jeweled parasol now shines above his head; the moonlike peacock plume no longer pleases him. Hearing the title ‘Lord of Braj,’ he turns his back and seats himself beneath the celebrated name of the Yadu clan. Gatekeepers occupy every portal and countless thousands of maidservants attend him. Sūr asks: how long could such a delicate prince endure the hardship of milking Gokula's cows?

Though there was no earth-shadow, an eclipse seized that moonlike face. I do not know how this Rāhu discovered the Lord of Umā. Between the cheeks it remained in the lowly eyes as the dark form of collyrium. Gaining strength from the ocean of separation, it emerged visibly, though its nature cannot be told. Crushed by the unbearable pain of biting teeth, the water of the eyes could not touch or soothe it. It seems nectar streams from within and flows down across the breast. Now the moon-face appears like churned curd from which all butter has been taken. Sūr says: unless Hari gives the gift of his vision, the radiance of joy cannot endure.

Gopāla has been accustomed to theft since childhood. I do not know from whom he learned all its tricks and deceptions. When he used to eat the butter and milk we had stored, we endured it out of affection. But tell me, companion, how can we bear the loss of the jewel of the mind? Bee, carry a message to Śyāma and explain the duties of kingship. Even now he will not relinquish that greed; such conduct does not befit the king of the Yadus. He took every possession of Braj—intelligence and discrimination—and remained smiling. Sūrdās asks: to whom can we go and tell the Lord's virtues and faults?

Although I made many attempts, bee, no one has taken her life, knowing her to be Hari's beloved. With her own hands she continually gathers fragrant flowers and spreads them upon the bed. The autumn moon stands directly before her, companion, yet none of her limbs burns. The calls of cātaka, peacock, cuckoo, and bee fill her ears. She gazes intently upon the Lord of Love and does not lower an eyelid even slightly. Night and day she repeats Nandanandana; he does not leave her heart for an instant. Though extremely desperate, Kāma arrays his fourfold army but releases no arrow. No one knows what virtue resides in this body that makes all of them afraid. Sūrdās says: ashamed before Śrīpati, even Kāma's warriors forget their strength.
