Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

Uddhava, keep that matter to yourself. When you discourse upon the unstruck sound and your fine doctrine, we shrink and are crushed. The pumpkin that is the fruit of yoga cannot fit into a goat's little mouth. Do not repeat yourself again and again—who would abandon nectar to eat poison? Our eyes thirst for his form; even the water of their tears gives them no satisfaction. Sūr says: the Lord Hari carried away our minds and left behind bodies bereft of well-being.

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

Uddhava, we have understood your purpose. You have come to Braj for no good reason, burning our hearts with bitter speech. If Śyāma truly dwelt inside every vessel, why would the anguish of separation not depart? Why should the mind accept false assertions, O fickle-witted man of little understanding? What could we women of Braj know of the inaccessible discipline and methods of yoga? Go teach them wherever the clever Dancer lives, entangled in love. Hari remains surrounded by maidservants, while you sit here inventing one elaborate tale after another. Utterly shameless, you still do not rise and leave, though Sūr has explained everything plainly.

Uddhava, I still preserve your dignity. Go away from here; even seeing you from a distance makes my eyes burn. You say that Gopāla's message is true—then look and see why he does not come, encircled by Kubjā. Those two are perfectly matched: he an Ahīr, she Kaṁsa's maid. When he sends an envoy like you, what more can I say? His judgment has turned completely astray. Sūrdās says: longing for reunion with your Lord, the cowherd women keep watching the road together.

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

Uddhava, the words of the Veda are our authority. Having once seen the khanjana-bird eyes upon that lotus face, how could these eyes look upon another? He is the abode of Śrī, possessed of every virtue, the treasury of every beauty. After making us drink the nectar of his lips, he departed and sent us this doctrine of knowledge. You say the merciful Lord is not distant but equally present in every heart—then why does Gopāla not come forth, knowing the sorrow of the sorrowful? No form or outline can be seen; without any savor, mere words bewilder us. Casting aside the sweet cane of Hari's virtues, you reach for water in a horn. How could Sūrdās erase the voice of revelation, which calls him the wise, detached Lord and the dwelling-place of his devotees?

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

Uddhava, now my heart has grown hard. Giridhara has forgotten his former love and become newly enamored elsewhere. Since the day he departed for Mathurā, none of my composure has remained. Charming Nandakishora, I have been your servant through birth after birth. Mohana shot the arrows of his glance, then departed by the very path they opened through my breast. Sūrdās cries: Lord, when will you meet me? Where are you staying, O Raṇachora?

Uddhava, Śyāma is no longer ours. Living in Mathurā, he has changed; that Mādhava is now your Mathurā bee. Though he has gone only this far away, he has become someone altogether different, while our eyes wear themselves out watching the road. Deceitful and crooked—like the crow reared by the cuckoo—at the end he spread his wings and flew away. A bee takes the flower's nectar and departs for its own advantage, forgetting the beloved in its heart. Sūrdās says: what can one say to those whose bodies and minds alike are black?

Uddhava, I bow at your feet; you have done well to come. Seeing you is almost like seeing Mādhava, and you have dispelled the threefold afflictions. Yet the bond with Nanda and Yaśodā has been broken, though Vedas and Purāṇas sing of it. We are Ahīr women, but you have erased even Hari's name and made us recognize only the name ‘attributeless.’ Once he played so many games in this cowherd settlement and let his arms be bound to the mortar. Sūrdās says: this alone is the thorn in my heart—the Lord has never again shown us his feet.

Uddhava, since you keep speaking of the attributeless, take it for yourself. Bring us instead the manifest form of Nandanandana. That path is inaccessible and supremely hard; there is no passage there. Even Sanaka and the other sages lost their way—where could helpless women go? You speak of the five elements and Prakṛti; how could we understand anything beyond them? Sūr says: in thought, word, and deed, you speak the language of an enemy.

Uddhava, is there still anything else to say? Speak it all out at once—I bow at your feet—and we will hear and endure it. Companion, until today my ears had never heard or encountered such instruction. Dry, bitter, and scorching, it seeks to inscribe a lifeless discipline upon the heart. Enchanting Śyāma dwells there and will not come out even for a moment; there is no room here for this doctrine, so carry it somewhere it can rest in comfort. All of us companions worship Gopāla—stop discussing it with us. Bee, Sūr says: take your doctrine back to Mathurā and bury it in Kubjā's house.

Uddhava, say whatever is fitting. Is there anyone at all in Braj suited to the knowledge you came to teach? In the end, listen to our counsel as well and reflect upon what we say. No words now rise for speaking; defeated by love, speech has fallen still. We have seen him as the very form of compassion and heard that he feels another's pain. Do whatever will extinguish the burning of this heart and lay something cool upon the breast. You turn us from the royal road and point toward a tangled, crooked, evil lane. Sūrdās asks: how could this great pumpkin ever be forced into the mouth of a goat?

Uddhava, listen to one thing from us as well. The lesson you are giving does not please us in the least. As a night-lotus grows wan without the moon, and a water-lotus withers without the sun, so without seeing the lotus-eyed Lord we writhe and wither away. Bodies rubbed with sandal paste and adorned with camphor—why smear those bodies with ash? Our ears are absorbed in the Bearer of the Flute; they tremble to hear the yogi's horn. Do you feel no shame at all, bringing instruction in yoga to helpless women? Having tasted the nectar of Hari's touch, how could they consume anything bitter? Counting and recounting the days until his promised return, they live; now their breaths can bear no more strain. Sūr says: Śyāma has utterly forgotten us, like a tree casting off a withered leaf.

Uddhava, what we feel cannot be spoken. Since separation from our darling Madanagopāla, our life-breaths have remained withered. When he mounted the chariot and began his journey, Gopāla turned and looked this way once more; at that moment every grateful girl of Braj arose and started after him. Now separation has made of us another kind of creation, babbling like wind-driven madwomen. What answer can you keep giving to such women, you who are perfectly wise? If even that former self-respect now diminishes, what can be done? Whatever conviction arises, we follow it. Sūrdās says: nothing can adequately describe the harsh ways of separation.

Uddhava, this heart is exceedingly hard. When Nandakishora left, it did not burst and flow out like water from an unbaked jar. We did not know anything of the ways and customs of love when the Lord of Braj abandoned us. He had no love for us, Uddhava; every convention of rasa has been put to shame. The poor fish are better than we are, for they remain faithful to their rule: parted from water, they immediately surrender the body, desiring water alone.
