‘Is your love a sword? Dark one, you fashioned its edge from your glance and struck; every woman of Vraja lies wounded. She remains upon the good field of Vṛndāvana and does not admit defeat even in battle, lamenting yet preserving herself each moment with the water of your moon-face. I shall remain gazing upon beautiful Śyāma’s enchanting form. Only a trace of life is left, Lord of Sūrdās—do not strike and cast it away now.’

‘Bee, who can persuade the unpersuadable? What can the imperishable, inaccessible, imperceptible one know of love’s rasa? Teach samādhi to that one; let learned people follow it. We shall live just as we are in Vraja, maddened by separation’s wind. Sleeping, waking, and dreaming, we shall remain devoted to the husband we accepted: the youthful boy, an ocean of playful līlā, in whose waters we are immersed. Once a tiny drop has fallen into the ocean of milk, who can distinguish it again? Body, wealth, and life have all been sold, says Sūrdās, for the smile upon Hari’s face.’

‘Bee, these minds have become spoiled. Pierced by Hari’s smile, they do not understand the Gītā of knowledge. Steeped in the rasa of child Mukunda’s form, they have become truly crooked. A dog’s tail will not grow straight though one make ten million efforts. They never forget the cool lotus of Hari’s feet, which moves within the heart. Yoga is a deep blind well; they are frightened merely to see it from afar. Filled with the good fortune of loving Hari, they take poison as nectar. Better to remain like this, says Sūrdās, filled with separation from Kanhā.’

‘Bee, if you are our well-wisher, do not pour yoga’s salt water into this nectar-ocean of worship. Hear the rule, fool: why not yoke the milk-giving cow to tear the earth with a plow? Why, before someone frightened merely by a rope, make a black snake grow larger? A bee strong enough to bore wood still cannot open the petal-doors when trapped at night within a lotus. Restless, fragrance-greedy bee, why babble without purpose? How could Śyāma’s beauty be forgotten, asks Sūrdās, when every limb from nail to crown shines before us?’

‘Bee, what village follows this custom? Everything in the yoga-story you tell the young women of Vraja is reversed. Hari’s hands dressed their heads with flowers and perfume and braided their hair; you would place ashes from the cremation ground upon those heads and make them aghorīs with matted locks. Gem-set earrings and lotus-radiance adorn their ears; you would make them wear yogic seals without a thought of pity. Nose-rings, jeweled necklaces, and lovely breath adorn them; you tell those mouths to blow a horn and eat milkweed and palāśa leaves. Their bodies were rubbed with musk and sandalwood and dressed in delicate cloth; for those same bodies the Lord of Vraja has composed old rags and sent them. Will the imperishable knowledge diminish unless yoga is taught this way? There they enjoy every pleasure to the full, says Sūrdās, while sending yoga here to Vraja.’

‘Bee, these eyes have accepted defeat. Gazing and gazing down the road for the lotus-eyed one, they have grown heavy and submerged in love. From that day sleep itself disappeared; startled, they fall open wide. When dreams end and waking returns, the same one remains who lives within our hearts. Take this qualityless doctrine to someone who understands its whole meaning. Whoever abandons Gopāla, says Sūrdās, sucks the bitter salt of a wild fruit.’

‘Bee, what can one say of the dark-colored race? Their love is not like a fish’s for water or a bee’s for the lotus. The crooked cuckoo deceives the crow and never returns to that forest. Just so, Kanhā sat with us in one row and drank the rasa of play. People perform yoga, sacrifice, and vows in many excellent ways for the good of a child. Look—even a serpent abandons delusion before its own young; a mother does not devour her child. Why disturb the mind over one whose nature offers peace only up to the limit of its flaws? Hear Sūrdās: Nandanandana’s string sounds one note alone.’

‘Bee, you have brought a message of yoga. You first told us the welcome news that Śyāma is well, yet hearing the rest produced dread. A hope of meeting him someday remained within the heart; your arrival destroyed even that. You tell young women to bind matted locks upon their heads so they may meet the imperishable.
