‘Uddhava, everyone is selfish. He himself plays with Kubjā while teaching yoga to us. Wandering bewildered into the forest, we see that dark embodied form everywhere. Now that he has become king, he feels ashamed of the rasa and rāsa upon the Yamunā’s sandy bank. Day after day our eyes do not blink; separation has become a grave disease. Unite us with Kanhā as with the twin Aśvin physicians, says Sūrdās, and every illness will disappear.’

Fresh editorial translation from the भ्रमरगीत-सार authority

‘Uddhava, he gave love as a dose of poison. A well-wisher in speech but deceitful in deed, he moved like a thief lying in wait. He planted the seed of separation and made us drink the poisonous water of the tiger’s whisker as though it were the sweetness of his lips. It sank and lodged within; medicine has no power over it. He gave the gift of poison well—there is no remedy. Let him kill us and finish the task, for this suffering cannot be watched. One is called a hero for killing an enemy, but treachery toward a friend is no virtue. Such men, bee, says Sūrdās, have no good destiny in this world.’

‘Uddhava, if Hari comes, our life will remain. We rise, go, return, and sit again, holding fast to the appointed span of life. I still see him when he was bound with rope to the mortar, standing with face lowered. The image of the butter-thief remains pierced within—how can knowledge make us forget it? Why bring such words to women who have borne fear of the lord of their families? Who would abandon the treasury of Śyāma’s qualities and rasa to drink ordinary water from a pot, asks Sūrdās?’

‘Uddhava, this is our firm conclusion: the jewel of affection has been lost to him, and love’s chamber has grown old. First he watered it with the nectar of his lips, nourished it, and raised it with countless caresses. Then Keśava played with it like a child who builds a little house only to knock it down. He showed trust like a serpent clinging to its cast-off skin, then never remembered us again, like a bee abandoning a withered vine. The many-colored one finds happiness wherever he goes; a single color burns our bodies with pain. Like an animal whose owner is a thief yet still seeks grain and water from him—such are we, says Sūrdās.’

‘Uddhava, we are your maidservants. Why speak bitter words and make yourself ridiculous? Why have you tied our virtues into a knot, and what judgment have you formed against us? The whole world knows what you have done. Whatever good or bad you say, we shall endure it all. We shall undergo the fruit of our own action and blame no one else. You are a great man, sent by the Great One, commander of all. Hearing the sorrow of Sūrdās’s Lord, you tell us to smear on ashes.’

‘Uddhava, you say Hari dwells within the heart. How can belief arise while we endure these cruel words? Day and night the hard fire of separation burns the life within. Smoldering and wasting, its smoke now streams as water from the eyes. Neglect grows still greater; bodily pain observes no boundary. Tell us—how can the mind accept these things spoken of Sūrdās’s Lord?’

‘Uddhava, you alone know everything. Give us a teaching suited to us, by the honor of Nanda’s son. How can one who delights in meat accept greens as the standard? How would bean leaves please a mouth accustomed to betel? How can the sound of a one-stringed lute seem true after hearing the flute’s song? How can the qualityless one enter a breast where wise Śyāma dwells? Without Śyāma we shall remain women in separation as long as life stays in this vessel. Happiness will begin only when Sūrdās’s Lord, radiant one of Vraja, returns to Vraja.’

‘Uddhava, grasp this one conclusion: either let the body go—that we shall accept as good—or let Hari come and remain in Vraja. Separation’s wildfire has seized the forest of the body; let the living senses burn. It can be quenched only when the dark-cloud Śyāma drops flute-nectar upon love’s lotus face. The fish of the mind lives in one rasa within the lake of his feet. You cast it onto the sand of the qualityless, asks Sūrdās—what justice is this?’

‘Uddhava, if Hari is your well-wisher, go and graciously tell him every one of our sorrows. A woman in separation burns like a tree, while you scorch us like forest fire. We neither cool nor burn to ash, but smolder and become black. Though clouds of stars rain down and drench us with surging love-water, even such careful watering only sustains this much life.
