Bee, move away from here. The sight of you makes our bodies burn still more, even to the pupils of our eyes. Keep your yoga safely stored away—who here will accept it, and who would cast away what she has? For your sake we have kept the words of our own mouths sweet rather than bitter. The name and virtues of our Girivaradhara, darling Kanhā, dwell in the heart. Sūrdās says: all of us are of one mind—you black ones are crooked through and through.

Bee, strangers are travelers on the road. They stay ten days for their own purpose, then abandon us and go; none ever turns back. First Hari sent us yogic accomplishment, and abstract knowledge arrived in front of it. Yoga is for us and enjoyment for Kubjā—such is his disposition. What can be done with Nandanandana, whose affection follows its own truth? Sūrdās says: body and mind have been offered to the Lord; whether the life-breaths remain or depart, where else can they go?

Bee, you are exceedingly accomplished and wise—knowledgeable about the three worlds, yet ignorant where women are concerned. Our hair is filled from golden bowls with perfumed and fragrant oils; you prescribe ash for those tresses—what a flame-colored game! The Beautiful One once took those locks and arranged their coiffure with his own hands; how did you bring yourself to tell them, Uddhava, to bear matted hair? Our ears hold disk earrings, studs, flowers, and curling ornaments; from those ears you would hang the yogi's great split-ear rings, with strips of cloth dangling. The forehead's tilaka, the eyes' collyrium, the nose-chain, nose-jewel, ring, and flower—all these must be abandoned so that we may meet your bright, uncovered ash. Around the throat lie lovely garlands and necklaces, pearls, diamonds, and countless gems; to that same throat you would fasten the yogic horn as an ornament. The mouth that spoke sweetly with its beloved, sang, and shared laughter—how could it survive holding silence and choking the upward breath? Fine bodices, bodies rubbed with fragrant paste and sandal, and beautiful saris—all replaced by one thick garment of tattered patches? What foolish counsel! Rise, Uddhava; all of us bow at your feet. We have seen your knowledge. Sūrdās says: may our Kanhā live, so that we may behold his face again.

Bee, from what country have you come? Since cruel Akrūra carried Mohana away, we have received no certain news. We thought a holy friend of Hari had come at the appointed time to sustain our fading lives. By this fortune, have we gained Nandanandana himself, or only one bearing his authority? Postures, meditation, restraint of breath—bee, these deeply delight body and mind! A wondrous doctrine indeed, which the learned sing as virtuous and auspicious. Yet the seals, horn, ash, and deerskin only scorch the bodies of the young women of Braj. Why did you not bring Sūr's Śyāma instead: flax-flower dark, with flute at his lips?

Bee, these cannot be words spoken by Kanhā. A new companion has taught him this lesson in the swelling of her own passion. She had stored these startling doctrines upon Kubjā's crooked back. Friend, having found Śyāma as a willing customer, she showed me only ash. That jewel among connoisseurs, that ocean of beauty who laughingly captivated the women of the world—knowledge must be the beguiling spell that stole his form; the deceiver himself has been well deceived. Kubjā has now become equal to the attributeless Absolute, while making us the ones found wanting. Sūr says: whichever city woman gave that clever Lord his yoga, today every one of its marks belongs to her.

What enmity is there between us and you, bee, that you behave as though Śyāma knew nothing? Bee, this is the outcome one always sees. While children are small, their elders place great hopes in them; once they have grown great, behold what they become. Father and mother performed yoga, sacrifice, austerity, charity, disciplines, and vows; somehow the son grew safely to manhood—so difficult is the delusion of attachment. Deeds reveal the truth: the cuckoo's affection and sweet fame last only until its purpose is served. Once that task is done and its trouble gone, where does the crow's foster-child fly? Wherever you remain, may you rule; may millions of heads bear your burden there. Hear this blessing we give, says Sūr: may not even one hair fall from you when you bathe.

From the bee's company one can tell that he has remembered his own lineage. Without understanding what she wished to say, he seized the beautiful woman's lotus face. What does a doe know of a hunter's call, or an innocent woman of a warrior's deadly design? Sing your melody, chant, or dance—once the quarry is exposed, he strikes and carries it away. Hari made the whole circle of Braj his gambling stake and won by playing against the rules. He seized the fickle woman who fell into his hands and carelessly kept her in his palace. He performed a further shameful deed by killing his maternal uncle amid intoxicated recklessness. Sūr says: even with so many faults, dark Śyāma possesses far more relish than your attributeless Absolute.

Bee, listen to the story of our eyes. Though all the limbs restrain them fiercely, the eyes keep flying away. Like a pigeon crazed by separation that abandons its home and circles in distress, so our sight departs and does not return without beholding Śyāma. We close the two doors of the eyelids and place them behind the curtain of a veil, yet when a breath escapes, they rush out the same way as soon as Love's anguish bursts. The ears remain by hearing Hari's glory, the mind by holding him in meditation, and the tongue by repeating his name—but these eyes suffer the loss of vision. The body's other portions enjoy and take whatever their objects provide. Sūr says: without that sight alone, these eyelids will not grant a moment's peace.

Bee, mighty one, you have done well to come. Having easily gained a vision otherwise rare, learn now what another's pain is. Reflect upon our words and humbly inquire of him: does the Lord of our lives still hold love for us, Uddhava, or not? Bee, what can anyone tell you? This is not a matter fit for ordinary speech. The ways of love are strangely their own; you must understand them within the heart. Sleep never enters our eyes; night and day separation grows through the body. Nanda's hard, pitiless son joined the bond of love and then tore it apart. Six-footed bee, what can we tell you of the heart's secret pain? Bee, this is the dark one's way: he gives his heart, steals another's entire treasure, and loves deceitfully. A bee spends the night within the lotus petals, delighting in love; when the sun rises, it flies elsewhere and never recognizes the flower again. A household raises a serpent in a basket as tenderly as mother and father raise a son, yet its family nature and species never change—it naturally bites and flees. Cuckoo, crow, and dark-colored deer make me remember Śyāma at every moment. Sūrdās says: I have seen the Lord's face, and night and day it alone delights me.
