‘No one in Vraja can read the letter. Why does Nandanandana keep writing and sending this blade of cruel separation? The eyes are wet, the paper exceedingly delicate, and the fingers of the hand feverishly hot. It burns at a touch and becomes soaked when looked upon; in both ways the breast suffers. How can these characters be understood, Sūrdās, when Love’s hard arrows strike? Only by seeing beautiful Śyāma will they live, remaining at his feet day and night.’

‘You have brought liberation and thrown it into a bad bargain. Uddhava, take your embodied doctrine away with understanding; this merchandise is all your capital alone. Carry it elsewhere to sell, or take it where a poisonous vine grows. Who among us would die for this, crushed beneath Vṛndāvana’s feet? Why wander from house to house bearing it upon your head, when all the friends are of one mind? There, says Sūrdās, is the lovely lifter of the mountain, whose arm once joined and gathered us to his shoulder.’

‘Bee, we have worshiped the Lord of Gokula. In mind, speech, and deed we held fast to Hari with a wife’s fidelity and performed the austerity of love-yoga. Abandoning the Vedic path of affection for mother, father, and kin, we cast away the delusion of pleasure and pain. Content in honor and dishonor alike, we kept the wavering mind still. Our posture was modesty; touching family virtue, we bowed to the one worshiped by the world. We restrained the wind of public censure and destroyed desire for the sake of love. Fear of elders was the fire on every side, and we endured the sun’s heat upon our nails. We drank the smoke of ridicule everywhere and heard uncounted infamy. In natural samādhi we forgot the body; gazing, we did not blink for an instant. The supreme light was the sweetness of every limb, held through the night in wakefulness. His bending brow was our meeting of the three channels; our eyes fixed upon his eyes were the unwavering stare. The radiance of his smile, lovely face, and earrings joined moon and sun in love. Hearing at the ear the flute upon his lips, we accepted that melody as the unstruck sound. Rasa rained with the charm of his speech, and we entered the bliss of the highest station. Mind-born Love gave the mantra for worship; our knowledge and meditation were Hari alone. Tell me, bee, asks Sūrdās: who can be our guru now, and who would listen to this tasteless doctrine?’

‘You could not keep anything unspoken in your heart. They have set you loose among us, and you chatter through the whole day. The one whose affairs you describe—tell us, whose burden is he now? What you say has become chaff upon the wind, swept away like a gale. Why exhaust yourself? Who here is listening? It is like someone weeping alone in the forest. Even after all this he does not understand, says Sūrdās—fate has utterly lost its wits.’

‘Now I understand it well. The one upon whom the heart had placed so much hope—that matter too is finished. Akrūra, son of Śvaphalka, and this Uddhava, friend, follow one and the same pattern. The first did what he did to us then; this one makes us abandon a jewel and grasp dust. Soft on the surface but hard as a thunderbolt within, each appears simple to the eye. Whoever comes from that Mathurā is broken from the same branch. Friend, I warned you before: dark-colored men do not become one’s own. Though one bow the head ten million times, says Sūrdās, they still walk only their own road.’

‘Bee, our relationship lasted only until this yoga appeared. Why babble uselessly when no purpose can be served and no profit comes from here? When you met us and drank honey again and again, tell me—where was this doctrine then? You have come teaching the qualityless, and it gives us no delight. It is like threading a raw glass bead upon a lotus fiber, or trying to rein in a maddened elephant by turning it around. Take this yoga and return it to Sūrdās’s Lord, the place from which it came. Whenever he desires it, he can ask some traveler to send it back.’

Bee, he already took my mind and my eyes when he departed in burning haste. Now he has risen and run to collect an exchange from us, as though carrying a winnowing basket in his hand. ‘Better than Hari was Sītā’s husband. He wandered from forest to forest searching for her with his brother and crossed the ocean. He killed Rāvaṇa, burned Laṅkā, and saw the frightened face of his beloved. He did not place in a messenger’s hand a written Gītā of Vedic knowledge and send it to her. What reproach can now be made against Kubjā’s companion? As intoxication rises, he forgets all awareness, like one drunk upon a funeral pyre. Out of grace he wrote and sent yoga—friend, look at that letter! How could the greedy thief of butter, asks Sūrdās, know anything of love?’

‘Uddhava, why should I preserve these eyes? Remembering his qualities again and again, they burn still more as they hear your words. They are reverent night-lotuses and cakora birds devoted to the moon of his enchanting face; desperately thirsty cātakas and peacocks awaiting the water-laden dark cloud. They are bees and swans at his lotus feet, fish in the water of his graceful gait, cakravāka birds before the jeweled sun of his splendor, deer held captive by his flute. ‘Bee, what kind of love is this for Nandanandana Mohana? If one must love him, it follows the pattern of water with the sun and the raincloud. Our time has passed like that of the fish, the lotus, and the cātaka—writhing, burning, and crying out. Listen, fool: this is no proper way. Yet the mind has fallen stubbornly into it; like a headless warrior in battle, even in defeat it wins. The ocean of love cannot be restrained by force, says Sūrdās, nor made afraid by a wall of sand.’
