“What is day without the sun, and what is night without the moon? What remains in Vraja without the dark beauty? Could we ever return to Gokula without taking Him with us? Who approaches a lake without water or beauty?”
“What is day without the sun, what is night without the moon, and what is Vraja without Krsna? Deprived of Krsna, we shall not return to Gokula, just as a waterless and unattractive lake is not fit to be visited.” (Sri Visnu Purana 5.7.27-28)
“Come, let all of us enter this great lake with Queen Yasoda.” (Sri Visnu Purana 5.7.26)
These feelings, moving within the lives of the affectionate women of Vraja submerged in unconsciousness, drew them back toward external awareness.
Among them were recently married cowherd girls who had witnessed a wondrous event during their weddings. Although no one else saw anything unusual, throughout the rites and while circling the sacred fire, most brides clearly experienced the dark beauty filling every atom of the bridegroom. It was Krsna who circled with them and took their hands. Not for an instant did they see the man to whom they had heard they were betrothed. Bewildered by this experience, their lives became wholly different. Sometimes they remembered it and sometimes forgot it completely, yet a strange pain remained in them. They became exhausted merely by seeing the dark beauty and had now run with the distraught community to Kaliya Lake.
Beside them were cowherd maidens of Krsna's age, whose lives seemed forever absorbed in Him and whose eyes inexplicably filled with tears whenever they saw Him. Both the newly married women and the young maidens suddenly awakened from unconsciousness and cried piteously:
“Cowherd girls, see! Though the serpent king's body encircles Him, Krsna's face shines with a smile upon seeing us.” (Sri Visnu Purana 5.7.32)
“Friends, even while wrapped in this enormous serpent, the dark beauty smiles upon seeing us. Look at His face adorned by that gentle smile.” Until then these brides and maidens had been unable to utter a word. The moment they reached the bank and saw Him enclosed in Kaliya's coils, the three worlds without their beloved Krsna had truly become empty.

“When their dearest beloved was seized by the serpent, they were scorched by intense sorrow and saw the three worlds, deprived of Him, as empty.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.20)
They fell like severed tender vines. Before even one “alas” of lament could emerge, their friend Unconsciousness, fearing that their hearts would split completely, lifted them into her lap as if to console them: “Fallen upon the earth and comforted by their friend Unconsciousness, they could not then lament.” (Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
Their cry, “Look at His smiling face,” entered the unconscious life of Vraja's queen. She opened her eyes wide and stared at her dark jewel. “No, though motionless, my Nilamani is alive. Otherwise, how could that smile remain upon His lips?”
Beating her chest violently and wailing, Mother ran toward the lake and placed her left foot in its water. Balarama raced from behind and enclosed her in His arms, preventing her from advancing.
Seeing this condition, Yasoda grew pale. Weeping, she struck her heart. The cowherds stood terrified, unable to run and release their darling. Distraught, she rushed into the water, but the steadfast, heroic Bala ran and seized her.
Her anguished call then sounded like a life-restoring mantra within unconscious Vrajendra. His eyes opened and he leaped toward the water. Lord Ananta, Balarama, seemed to accept a second manifestation and caught Father in His arms too. Even the immeasurable strength of Rohini's son, the form of Sesa, seemed nearly checked; with great difficulty He pulled Vrajesvara backward. Nanda again moved to enter Yamuna, but Baladeva stopped him by every means.
No cowherd woman or man could enter the lake. Balarama stood before them all, moving one away with a gesture, touching another's shoulder, and gathering another into His arms. A wondrous supernatural halo covered His face, and in a cloud-deep voice He called:
“Father, do not afflict your body with this grief that burns the mind and grows stronger at every moment. Your body is dear to Krsna.” (Sri Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
“Mother, lament no longer. Hear my words and hold fast to patience.” (Sri Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
“Residents of town and country, do not create a new calamity through unconsidered action and become subject to another great sorrow.” (Sri Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
The strength in Rohini's son's voice steadily increased. Pointing toward Krsna bound in Kaliya's coils, He continued.

English translation
“People of Vraja, you certainly do not know the glory of My younger brother's valor. When a mighty pride awakens in Him to crush another's arrogance, you know nothing of the bliss-increasing majesty of the courage then manifested. I alone know it. What foremost god could attain even a fragment of knowledge of My brother's greatness?” (Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
“Know for certain that the defeat of Kaliya, lord of serpents, by My brother Krsna, this elephant among men, is about to occur.”
“Do not worry about Kaliya's enormous strength. Before Krsna it is useless. Though wind is very powerful, it can never defeat Giriraja.”
“Darkness cannot stain the sun, bearer of a garland of rays. Darkness is destroyed merely by the sun's presence. Before supremely radiant Krsna, the destruction of this opposing darkness in the form of Kaliya is inevitable.”
“Why imagine fear from so insignificant a serpent for My brother Krsna, who wears shark-shaped earrings? Cast away sorrow now. Look! After rendering this vile serpent nearly lifeless, My brother of unbroken prowess is already rising.” (Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
After saying this, Balarama's grave, lovely eyes in His fair lotus face turned again toward Yasoda, Nanda, and the others. His beautiful white body bent toward the royal couple's feet. Though His words retained their supernatural splendor, His eyes became slightly tear-filled and His throat choked as He added:
“By the truth of your taste for shelter at the lotus feet, I swear that not even the slightest injury will touch a single hair of His head. Gargacarya's words will prove true.” (Sri Gopala-campu)
“Vrajesvara, Father, Vraja's queen, Mother, and Mother Rohini, I swear by all your radiant feet that not even the slightest harm will come to one hair of Krsna. Gargacarya too has said this.”
Balarama's assurance had this effect: Vrajesvara, Vraja's queen, and the residents whose lives were Krsna did not enter Kaliya Lake. He stopped them all. Yet He could do so only while established in His divinity and drawing upon majestic power. The pure current of Vraja rasa could not cross the mountain of majesty formed by Anantadeva's transcendent, radiant assurance. For once it was checked.
“Seeing Nanda and the others, whose lives were Krsna, about to enter the lake, Lord Rama, who knew Krsna's power, restrained them.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.22)

English translation
Many cowherds headed by Nanda rushed into the water, but Baladeva caught and turned them back. Knowing the Lord's playful purpose perfectly, He spoke beautiful words with affection.
Yet how could the current of their love truly grow weak? Mother Yasoda's eyes remained fixed only upon her dark jewel. Seeing her desperately agitated gaze, who could say she would not again try to leap into the lake? Therefore the women of Vraja surrounded and held her. Their lives bore the same burden of suffering and their eyes poured ceaseless tears, but to offer Mother a little comfort they recounted how Nilamani survived Putana, escaped Trnavarta unharmed, and emerged safely from Baka's terrible throat. By narrating these events, they awakened hope in her.
Their own eyes remained absorbed in the lotus face of the dark beauty enclosed in the serpent's coils. Yet under the inconceivable pastime potency's inspiration, their speech recounted those earlier events while Mother swung between hope and despair. They lived in name only. Moment by moment their bodies became motionless like corpses, and it cannot be said that they retained bodily awareness.
“Sharing her pain and shedding tears, the women supported Krsna's mother, who was about to follow her child. With their eyes fixed upon Krsna's face and appearing like corpses, they told her many beloved stories of Vraja.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.21)
Their helpless eyes and faded faces remained upon Krsna's lotus face as they wept in agitation. Their lotus eyes released streams of water for Murari, who forever dwelt in their hearts. Recounting Gopala's lovely qualities and the wonders He performed in Vraja, all the women forgot their bodies as if they had died.
Balabhadra prevented the cowherd men from entering the lake and saved them from death through contact with its poisonous water. But the flame within them was fiercer than the lake's deadly poison. Its terrible tongues scorched body, mind, and life. Men and women alike seemed about to have their lamps of life extinguished within moments. Under the pain of bewilderment they suffered like fish removed from water.
And what of Sri Krsnacandra, Bhagavan Himself, abode of infinite majesty? Did He not see the pitiful condition of His own people or hear their anguished cries? He saw and heard everything. This was the churning of Vraja's ocean of feeling. Some drops of this ocean, some particles of nectar born from its churning, would scatter upon the shore of the material world as supreme medicine for countless beings burned by the three miseries. Whoever touched them through endless time would have those flames forever calmed.
With this intention, and to nourish and increase His people's rasa, Vrajendra's son had rested within Kaliya's coils. That purpose was now fulfilled. Even another moment of delay would sever the residents' life threads. The supremely compassionate Lord saw that they would either offer their bodies into the poisonous lake and join Him, or separation's fire would burn their bodies and, freed of covering, they would reach Him.

However it happened, they would unite with their life's support. They had no destination except His company, and this was not hidden from the all-knowing Lord. His eternally affection-softened heart cannot bear even the slightest distress of His own people. He does not ask what that distress seeks; the knowledge that His beloved suffers overwhelms Him, and the infinite ocean of compassion forgets everything else and runs to remove all pain.
How long could the supreme friend watch His people grieve solely for Him, wishing only to see Him pleased? Even Krsna's patience reaches a limit on such occasions. The cows lowed beneath the burden of pain, His childhood companions sobbed, the cowherds wailed, and the lives of the motherly women were restless to fly and meet Him. The maidens approached endless sleep, and the cowherd women's eyes showed the peaceful line of unbroken samadhi. Could the dark beauty still enact motionlessness within Kaliya's bonds? Never.
Two gharis had passed with Him enclosed in the serpent. To extend that time by even an instant would mean the complete destruction and untimely disappearance of Gokula, which is His own essential nature. The Lord had also sufficiently followed human custom by allowing the punishable offender's crime to become visible to all. Kaliya's cruelty stood revealed and the convention had been fulfilled. There would be no more delay. Victory to the moon of Gokula. Victory to the dark beauty. He threw off the serpent's bonds and rose.
“Seeing His Gokula, including its women and children, without any refuge but Him and suffering intensely for His sake, and understanding their state, the Lord followed the human path. After remaining bound for a short time, He rose from the serpent's coils.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.23)
The Lord saw Vraja's men and women, children and elders, all overcome with sorrow for Him. The compassionate Lord considered this within His heart. After maintaining the human amusement for a danda, the skillful Lord emerged from the serpent's bonds. Seeing everyone in the world distressed and their minds specially attached to Him, He shook His body, cast off the serpent king, broke its strength, and became free.
Kaliya could no longer keep Krsna within his coils. His dull intelligence could not understand how it happened. Before his eyes, Krsna's blue body, though appearing unchanged in shape, became greater and greater in practical extent and expanded immensely. Even while enclosed in the same tight bonds, a wondrous vastness manifested in Him. Kaliya's body began to split, the firm bonds quickly loosened, and each layer of coils opened by itself.
In thousands upon thousands of fractions of half a moment, this wonder occurred. Kaliya immediately understood that not he alone, but millions upon millions of serpents like him, joining their vast bodies together, could not encircle even one little toe of this extraordinary child. Helpless, Kaliya was forced to release Him.

English translation
Kaliya released Him, but the beginningless maya that deludes those turned away from Bhagavan is not so thin that a soul easily beholds the self-luminous Lord of consciousness, bliss, and infinite majesty. Though the great fool directly experienced a trace of Vrajendra's son's unequaled power, he remained blind and his eyes did not open. Instead he became furious, raised his hoods again, and cast long breaths. Streams of poison poured from his nostrils. His terrible eyes stood fixed like blazing vessels of poison, and his mouth resembled burning coals.
It was as though every transformation of darkness had manifested in him at once. Dreadful, staring steadily at Krsna, he waited for the next move:
“Distressed in his coils by the expansion of Krsna's body, the enraged serpent released Him and raised his hoods. Breathing poison through his nostrils, his eyes fixed and his face like a firebrand, he stared at Hari.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.24)
Krsna's body expanded with mighty force. The serpent abandoned his terrible bonds, lifted his hoods, and stood staring at the Lord. His breath was dreadful, his nostrils like a hard furnace. His eyes burned like fire and his face like a blazing mass.
His many swollen hoods spread overhead like dense clouds gathering into a storm. His eyes shone red as though drawn hot from a furnace. Opening his fierce mouth, he displayed it like a great storehouse of poison. His fangs protruded like adamantine nails, with death dwelling within and the vile serpent laughing deeply. His powerful tongue emerged, a pain-dealing sword drawn from the sheath of death. He cast great breaths, red with rage, like the wrath of the sun's son. Jets from the net of poison blazed outward and scorched trees in every direction. The nostril holes sounded in anger like drums in the orchestra of death. Intoxicated with pride and prepared for battle, the crooked serpent did not recognize the Supreme Reality.
Life began returning to the nearly lifeless bodies of all Vraja's residents upon the bank, and their cries ceased. They did not know the dark beauty's next plan, but no one doubted that Rohini's son's words had proven true.
On one side flowed the dark blue current of Kalinda's daughter. On the other, the black great serpent Kaliya hissed. Before him stood the newly cloud-dark Syamasundara, Sri Krsnacandra. What an excellent conjunction for the dark beauty's coming theater.
In this way black Kaliya stood shining, terrible as death, his net of hoods like branches of a tamala tree. The water of Kalinda's daughter was black, the serpent's body was black, and the beautiful dark Lord resembled a black rain cloud. A fine assembly had formed.
