Vraja's queen had gone to prepare foods pleasing to her life-treasure, the dark beauty, when a cowherd woman sneezed. Mother immediately returned to the courtyard to let the inauspicious moment pass. After resting briefly and touching auspicious objects, she again went toward the kitchen, but a cat ran across her path. Her heart began to pound. Distressed, she came out of the house and reached the arched gateway, where further evil signs appeared. A crow called ominously on her left, and a donkey brayed on her right. Clutching her heart, Mother Yasoda moved from outside to inside and inside to outside, calling her dark jewel with a choked voice. Not a trace of peace remained in her mind.
As Yasomati entered the kitchen, a cowherd woman sneezed. She stopped at the doorway, feeling that nothing was right. Nanda's queen returned to the courtyard, counteracted the fault, and set out again, but a cat crossed before her, so she returned once more. Distraught, she went outside asking where Kanhaiya had gone. A crow cried on the left and a donkey on the right, and she returned home in agitation. One moment inside, the next outside, and the next in the courtyard, Mother called for Syama without the slightest peace in her mind.
In the cowshed adjoining the palace, Vrajesvara's mind suddenly lost all enthusiasm. Distracted, he immediately walked toward the house. As his foot reached the doorway, many evil omens met him. As Nanda returned home and entered the gate, someone sneezed on his left and a harsh sound arose on his right. His ear throbbed, a dog whined at the door, and a female hawk fought nearby. A crow flew over his head, and he perceived many inauspicious signs.
He saw Yasoda before him with a faded face and asked in distress, “Why has your face withered? Where have Bala and our son Mohana gone?” Tears streamed from Nanda's wife as she revealed her anguish in a broken voice: “I entered the kitchen, but someone sneezed, so I returned to the courtyard. Then a cat crossed before me, and I saw many other evil signs.”
The royal couple entered the same condition. The shadow of approaching calamity flickered upon both their hearts, making them still more restless. One moment the king and queen stood inside, the next in the courtyard, and then they went outside to look.
Women of Vraja came running, followed by cowherd men. The cause was clear: dreadful omens appeared to everyone. At midday in summer, jackals near the grove continuously faced the sun and announced misfortune. Though the air held no windblown dust, the directions were smoky, dim, and black like buffalo horns. The sun itself resembled a lusterless jewel. The once pleasant breeze felt like a tempest. Vraja's earth repeatedly shook as never before. The women's right eyes and limbs trembled, while the men's left eyes and limbs throbbed.

English translation
The Ananda-vrndavana-campu describes the harsh-voiced jackals calling toward the sun, the dustless directions darkened by smoke, the sun robbed of splendor, the wind harsh to the touch, the earth shaken by a great tremor, the left eyes and limbs of the men throbbing, and the corresponding right eyes and limbs of the women trembling.
Thus three kinds of exceedingly terrible signs announcing imminent danger appeared in the cowherd settlement: in the sky, upon the earth, and within the bodies of its residents.
“Then in Vraja arose three kinds of exceedingly dreadful disturbances, upon the earth, in the heavens, and within living bodies, foretelling approaching danger.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.12)
Three kinds of calamity arose in Vraja, bringing distress in heaven, upon earth, and in the sky.
Vrajesvara and the cowherds lost their composure. Seeing these world-destroying portents, their lives trembled with fear. At that moment Kanhaiya's elder brother Balarama arrived, and every eye turned toward Him. Their last remaining hope vanished. If only Balarama had been with the dark beauty. Had Rohini's supremely radiant and auspicious child been present to protect Nanda's son, every danger would surely have removed itself. This feeling in the residents' inner awareness and this loving conviction of Vraja's simple queen and king had always cooled their lives. But by cruel fate Krsna had gone to graze the cows today without Balarama.
“Seeing those omens, the cowherds headed by Nanda became distraught when they learned that Krsna had gone to pasture the cows without Rama.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.13)
They said, “Today Syama went to the forest without Rama. Some disaster has occurred.”
“Nothing remains. Everything seems destroyed. What else can these dreadful signs mean? The dark beauty has left us all and gone.” Vraja's king and queen reach the same conclusion because awareness of Krsna's unequaled greatness never arises in their hearts steeped in parental love. Only the ocean of parenthood continually surges there. Offering everything, they remain immersed in its shoreless waves with the single wish for His happiness.
Although the utterance of His name ends every inauspicious thing, at every step they fear misfortune for Him and feel pain in their lives. Today so many dreadful portents appear simultaneously to all of Vraja that their apprehension for the dark beauty, dearer than millions of lives, has no limit. The thought of His death awakens in them. Overwhelmed by endless grief, sorrow, and fear, they cannot remain composed. As if their lives race outward and their bodies, tied to those life threads, are pulled after them, every resident and the royal couple rush madly from Gokula.
Only the longing to see Krsna once more remains, to behold their life's complete treasure in whatever condition He may be, as though for the final time. Their lifelong discipline and river of love have always flowed unbroken toward Him alone. They have scarcely any desire to receive affection in return. Ordinary parental love still contains a sense of duty, satisfaction at fulfilling that duty, and some hope of future affection from the child.

An animal, however, gives its newborn offspring spotless, blind affection without awareness of duty, satisfaction in fulfilling duty, or even the faint dormant wish to receive future benefit. Still, with all its life it runs toward its distant newborn. In exactly that way the people and royal couple of Vraja flow in blind parental love, equal to the animal's affection for its young. Like beings governed by animal instinct, they run without even knowing where they must go to see their life-treasure.
Bound as if by one cord, young and old hurry in one direction. The women's hair comes loose, their coverings fall into disorder, and the cowherds' topknots open. Stumbling at every step, falling to the ground and rising again, they continue onward. From countless throats the piteous cry “Alas, Krsna!” echoes through the forest.
“Not understanding the truth, they took those evil omens to mean that He had died. Their lives fixed in Him and their minds absorbed in Him, they became anguished by grief, sorrow, and fear. All the children, elders, and women, acting like animals, left Gokula in misery, longing to see Krsna.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.14-15)
Seeing the dreadful calamity, they suspected death. Children, elders, men, and women anxiously abandoned their homes. How could those whose life was Krsna remain home while thirsty for Hari's sight? Not knowing His power, their minds filled with terrible grief. Crushed and confused by separation, young and old went to the forest.
Seeing calamity here, they carried sorrow in their hearts for the place where Vraja's darling was. “Syama, abode of beauty, went to the forest without Rama. Where can He wander without fear?” Hearing this, the cowherd women, Yasoda, Rohini, and the men rose in agitation. Full of dread, they ran, longing to see Mohana's form.
Rohini's son Balarama went with them. No fatigue, pain, or shadow of anxiety appeared upon His face; a clear smile rested upon His lips. Though Rohini, Vraja's queen and king, and the residents saw Him as a child, He was truly the second expansion of the Supreme Person, the original Sankarsana. What could be hidden from the omnipotent Lord and master of all knowledge? He knew every plan of His younger brother and His limitless majesty. What room could there be for fear, wonder, or concern?
Previously, whenever Balarama saw the faded faces of Mother Yasoda and Nanda Baba, He could not remain still without embracing their necks and cooling their lives. Today, however, though He saw His beloved mother, father, relatives, and all Vraja distressed by the prospect of separation from Krsna, He said nothing and only smiled softly. Who can know the intention of Sankarsana, elder brother of Vrajendra's son?
“Seeing them so terrified, Lord Balarama, who knew His younger brother's power, smiled slightly and said nothing.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.16)
Baladeva said nothing to them, for He knew the secret of His brother Hari.
As soon as they left the settlement, the residents saw the dark beauty's lovely footprints upon Vrndavana's earth. The marks seemed to call, “Come, use us to find your dark jewel.” There was no room for doubt. The signs from the soles of Krsna's feet were plainly visible upon the path toward Yamuna's bank. It became clear that today He had gone to pasture the cows toward the daughter of Kalinda rather than Giriraja.

The residents followed those marks and soon reached Yamuna's bank. Krsna's footprints were not the only ones there. The marks of countless cowherd boys and the cows they led were also imprinted upon the path. Mingled among them were Krsna's footprints, adorned with the lotus, barleycorn, goad, thunderbolt, flag, and other emblems. The forest path was covered with innumerable tracks.
Yet the eyes and lives of every resident and the royal couple centered only upon the graceful lotus-and-barley-adorned marks of the extraordinary leader of the cowherds. They saw without seeing the signs of the countless cows and boys who had also taken that road. They never became confused. How could they? The power of Krsna's footprints is unique, and one who walks with eyes fixed upon them never loses the path.
No creature can or wishes to cover those marks, for they are the treasure of every life. Even dust moved by an insentient wind cannot erase their clarity. Wherever they are once impressed, they become established as ornaments of that place and its earth. Through them, one who walks looking only at them can always find Krsna easily. Thus the cowherd men, women, king, and queen rapidly reached Yamuna's bank while gazing only upon those signs.
“Searching for their beloved Krsna, they followed the path indicated by footprints bearing the Lord's distinctive marks and reached Yamuna's bank. Here and there along the cows' path, amid other tracks, they carefully observed the footprints of the Lord of the universe, marked with lotus, barleycorn, goad, thunderbolt, and flag, and hurried onward.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.17-18)
The earth bore the marks of flag, barley, lotus, mace, fish, bow, and other signs. They followed that marked ground. They sought only the lotus feet whose auspicious marks shone. Wherever they saw the discus, conch, fish, lotus, barley, goad, thunderbolt, and flag, they carried upon their heads the dust desired daily by Siva, Brahma, Sanaka, and Sanandana, and cried “Krsna! Krsna! Govinda!” Thus searching, they reached the bank of the deep river, the daughter of the sun.
But when they moved beyond the shade of the great banyan upon the bank, they realized in horror that the path led only toward Kaliya Lake. Their lives seemed scorched merely by remembering its deadly poison. Guided by Krsna's footprints, they crossed the boundary of the dense forest and advanced into the treeless land beyond. Whether their bodies still possessed a natural power to move, or some inconceivable potency carried life through their network of nerves and drove them onward, is difficult to determine.
They reached the vicinity of the lake. From afar, their wide, staring eyes gradually filled with a terrible scene: countless cowherd children seemingly without life, innumerable young cowherds lying as if dead, and numberless cows standing beside the water like motionless images. The only sign of life in them was their intermittent lowing in voices of extreme grief: “The cowherds stood all around with bewildered minds, while the animals cried out.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.19)

English translation
The host of cows lowed loudly, while the cowherd children lay unconscious upon the ground.
Then some inconceivable power truly drew the bodies of the residents and royal couple nearer to the lake, where the central, heart-rending sight revealed itself. Their pupils were already fixed upward in their eyes, but as a lamp's flame flares before extinction, a faint line of light flickered by itself within their eyes, and they saw the dark beauty motionless in the lake, wrapped to His neck by Kaliya's enormous body.
“From afar they saw Krsna within the lake, inactive and enveloped in the serpent's coils.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.19)
Their eyes fell upon the forest-garlanded Lord in the lake, His body encircled by black Kaliya.
Vrajesvara was the first to fall upon the bank. Before he fell, this anguished cry escaped his choked throat: “Alas, son! You loved Your father. How could You commit such a rash act?” (Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
“My darling, You loved me so dearly. How could You suddenly dare such a deed? How could You go before me?”
Within a moment all the cowherds collapsed around him: “Child, lover of Vraja's people, Your beloved residents now enter death. Tell us, darling, where can we find Your company? Alas! Ah!” Lamenting in this way, the milkmen fell upon the ground around Vrajesvara. (Ananda-vrndavana-campu)
And Vraja's queen? Even unconsciousness could not bear the weight of her immeasurable pain. She had already fallen many times while approaching the lake, but at her touch the fire of suffering burned unconsciousness itself and drove it away. Thus she arrived slightly later. When she saw her dark jewel in that condition, what became of her? The goddess of speech has no power even to hint at it. The women following her entered the same state. A heart steeped in Krsna rasa may touch only the faintest reflection of their sorrow: for a moment a tumultuous wail resounded everywhere, and then a terrifying silence fell.
It is true that if, by the plan of the inconceivable pastime potency, the dark beauty's enchanting earrings had not trembled repeatedly within the serpent's enclosure, if somehow His forest garland and the radiance of His yellow cloth had not remained visible through the coils and reflected themselves upon the hearts of the residents and royal couple bound to Him by the threads of life, that silence upon the lake's bank would have become the great extinction of all Vraja. But that was not the sequence of the pastime.
Therefore nectar and poison flowed simultaneously through every heart. From one side came the nectar of the dark beauty's form; from the other came Kaliya's terror:
His priceless, charming crown leaned to one side. His disheveled hair and earrings swayed at His ears. The auspicious forest garland lay tangled upon His chest, and His yellow cloth was firmly bound at His waist. The mighty serpent wrapped every limb, like dense clouds gathering around a rain cloud.
