The forest wandering of those child cowherds who protect all worlds is unique. Rama and Syama walk ahead, viewing the forest's beauty, while Their fortunate friends enjoy happiness beside Them. Flowers sway and drip honey, clouds of pollen rise, and fragrant breezes bind the bees and awaken love.

At the same time one charming amusement after another arises. Hearing bees, intoxicated by drinking the fragrance of His limbs, hum around Him, Krsna imitates their buzzing so sweetly and perfectly that even His constant elder companion Balarama is amazed and joyfully joins the game. The cowherd children overflow with delight. Praise of their Kanhaiya, dearer than millions of lives, and cries of “Wonderful! Bravo, Kannu!” ring at every step. Their hearts hold memories of hundreds of thousands of His pure, loving, rasa-filled deeds. Whichever memory opens first becomes a song. Though the countless boys have never studied rhythm or melody, their spontaneously composed songs never falter. Their voices flow in perfect time behind the dark beauty's playful gestures, as if touching that conscious stream of rasa. Swarms of honey-intoxicated bees hum naturally, some seated upon the garland hanging at Krsna's neck and chest. Krsna's extraordinary imitation adds its melodious current, and the boys' joyful songs of His fame add graceful waves. These three streams blend wonderfully.

The Vaisnava-tosani explains: “Here the bees sing only the sound natural to their species; the Lord follows that sound with the appropriate melody and raga; and His followers sing His deeds, setting both to song. Thus one should understand their mutual musical blending.”

The wanderer of Vrndavana creates a wondrous scene:

“Sometimes, as intoxicated bees sing, the garlanded Lord sings with them. Accompanied by Sankarsana, He is praised in song by His followers.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.10)

When intoxicated bees make their lovely song, Hari begins a beautiful song in imitation. The cowherds sing Hari's glories as He wanders in the forest, finding the happiness within every happiness.

Sometimes the charming, soft speech of a parrot fills Krsna's ears, and at once He imitates it in a voice sweeter still. Sometimes He hears the cuckoo's melodious fifth note and answers with the same melody in an even softer voice. Within moments the parrots, cuckoos, and other birds fall silent. Still and quiet, they seem to gaze at this unusual rival singer, ashamed to compare their harsh calls with the dark beauty's honey-streaming voice.

“Sometimes He answers a talking parrot with sweet words, and sometimes He imitates the cuckoo's lovely cooing.”

At times the indistinct, joyous calls of beautiful swans become His amusement. He goes very near them and blends His voice with their song. No one can distinguish the swans' naturally lovely sound from the astonishing imitation made by this marvelous young swan, forever entangled in Vrajesvara's net of affection.

Then His attention turns to peacocks dancing in different parts of the woodland. Sri Krsnacandra runs to them. With His hands He quickly spreads the upper cloth of His yellow garment behind Him like the expanded golden tail of a new peacock intent on dancing. Before the flock He dances in exact imitation of their rhythm. Seeing the strange poses of His great emerald-dark limbs, the countless boys laugh loudly, their free laughter echoing throughout the mountain region. The peacocks grow shy, fold their tails, stop dancing, and gaze only at Krsna, feeling that they cannot dance so beautifully.

“Sometimes He imitates the calls of swans. Sometimes He dances before a dancing peacock and makes His companions laugh.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.11)

Sometimes, hearing the graceful speech of swans, He regards it as equal to His own and speaks like the auspicious voice of Brahma's carrier. Sometimes, seeing the peacock dance, Hari, the abode of bliss, also dances. Here and there He joins the swans, moving and calling just as they do. Elsewhere, seeing an intoxicated peacock dance, Nanda's son dances in the same way.

At times Krsna becomes almost self-forgetful in the rasa-filled absorption of childhood play. The boys lose awareness in the intoxicating joy of watching, and the cows, left unguarded, roam freely very far away. Suddenly awakening, Vrajendra's son shows a curious anxiety upon His ever-fresh lotus face. “Brothers, see how far the cows have gone!” He alerts His friends. A slight shadow of fear enters their eyes, but the next moment His former smile returns to His bimba-red lips. He runs up a high branch of a nearby kadamba and calls in a cloud-deep voice: “Pisangi! Manikastani! Pranatasrngi! Pingeksane! Mrdangamukhi! Dhumale! Hamsi! Vamsipriye! Come, come! Hio! Hio!” Overcome with affection, He calls each cow by name. Who can describe the stream of nectar His exceedingly sweet, enchanting cloud-voice creates in the ears of the vast herd and the cowherd boys?

“Pisangi, Manikastani, Pranatasrngi, Pingeksane, Mrdangamukhi, Dhumale, Sabali, Hamsi, Vamsipriye!” Calling “Hi! Hi!” again and again, Hari summons His distant herd and steals the heart.

“Sometimes, with a voice deep as a cloud, He lovingly calls the distant animals by name, delighting both cows and cowherds.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.12)

Sometimes, seeing His own cows and those of His friends far away, the benefactor of His companions calls the animals with a cloudlike voice. When the cows wander far, He climbs a lovely kadamba. His beautiful call resembles a cloud of bliss as He looks here and there and waves His cloth: “O Ganga! O Godavari! O Yamuna, Bhavari, Cavari! O Manjari, Kunjari, Siyari! O white, smoky, and yellow cows!”

The gods traveling in the sky see that the moment the cows hear Vrajendra's son's call, they spit out the half-chewed grass in their mouths, lift their heads, low together in loving helplessness, and race with all their life's force toward Nanda's son. Hearing the sound, every cow drops the grass from her mouth, raises her head, and looks. Overcome by love, they call out and turn back from every direction at a run.

Victory to the great Lord's submission to love! Overwhelmed with joy, Nanda's son wipes from the cows' faces the dust clinging there with His yellow cloth. The four-armed Lord takes His yellow cloth in hand, unable to contain the joy in His heart, and the king of Govardhana wipes dust from the cows' mouths.

Tears fill the cows' eyes. The boys are immersed in joy at the sight, and the hearts of the gods in their aerial cars also overflow. In the cows' wet eyes the gods discern a profound sign. These are no ordinary cattle born through material succession. They are eternal transformations of the sandhini potency situated within the essential nature of the Supreme Person, Sri Krsnacandra. Every action of theirs must carry a special meaning, just as every movement of their keeper's eyes, lips, and limbs signals countless mysteries each moment to the mortal world, to the entire gross, subtle, and causal cosmos, and to innumerable universes.

It is ordinarily impossible for these cows willingly to leave Krsna, dearer than millions of lives. If they have gone, it occurred only through the inspiration of His inconceivable pastime potency and under Yogamaya's control, so that Vrajendra's son's pastime sequence might unfold perfectly. It is therefore no wonder that someone receives a beautiful indication from their feeling-filled conduct. The gods feel that the cows silently address the embodied souls: “See our condition. The Supreme Person, the cowherd king's son, eternally remains with us and increases our happiness through ever more charming play. Yet through animal nature we leave Him, tempted by tender grass. Blessed is the causeless mercy of the ocean of compassion. He never forgets us. Even when we wander far, He calls us, and upon our return He immerses us in His boundless ocean of affection. Your condition is just like ours. Sri Krsnacandra is your eternal companion. For your happiness He manifests one beautiful creation after another and remains behind you, playing.”

English translation

“If only you would turn your vision toward Him, remain near Him, and enjoy those creations, the eternal pastimes of the moon of Vrajendra's family would become your own. Instead you are bewildered, with animality ever awake in you. Turning your eyes from your eternal friend Nanda's son, you go very far away and become entangled in the lure of sense objects. Even then the endless, shoreless mercy of this supremely compassionate dark beauty surges toward you, using some utterly ordinary and insignificant occasion as its cause. His concealed call pierces the densest covering of your animal nature and draws you. What an incomparable, immeasurable gift of grace! Souls, awaken even now. Turn your eyes at once from the glitter of the objects, look behind and within, and see Sri Krsnacandra calling you. Dissolve all the mind's movements into His sapphire-radiant limbs. Never abandon His company. Remain eternally at His lotus feet. There you will obtain everything you seek. This is truth, truth, immutable truth: no happiness exists anywhere apart from the dark beauty. Any experience of happiness without Him is mere delusion. Only animal-like people, devoid of intelligence and discrimination, suffer this illusion and continue seeking happiness while moving ever farther from Krsna.”

The Vaisnava-tosani explains: “Through the double meaning of the word animals, their going far from Sri Krsna's side indicates lack of intelligence.”

The distant cows have now returned. That alone was the playful Lord's intention, and it has been accomplished. What amusement comes next? The boys immediately offer proposals. One says, “Kannu, let us see if You can call like a cakora.” Another asks for the cry of a kraunca, a third for a cakravaka, and a fourth for a lava. One assumes a grave pose and says, “Kanhaiya, dancing like a peacock does not look so difficult to me. Show us whether You can call like one.” The many boys have different tastes, and what creature is not drawn to Krsna? Cakoras, krauncas, cakravakas, bharadvajas, and other birds gather near Him. He fulfills every wish and accepts every greeting.

The boys marvel: “Kanhaiya knows a wondrous art. In moments He first reproduced each bird's call exactly and separately. Now somehow the voices of all these birds sound together from His mouth.” Flocks of forest birds stand silent and still, gazing at Vraja's prince absorbed in imitating their own calls. Knowing that the forest's Lord has entered their home, love has drawn them to see and welcome Him. Why should the forest's king not answer their welcome in their own languages? What kind of king cannot continuously join his life with the lives of his subjects? By indescribable fortune, these moving and unmoving forest dwellers have a king who rules by wholly mingling His life with theirs. Seeing such a loving emperor before them and hearing Him speak in each of their languages, the birds' joy has no shore. Excessive happiness makes them still.

This loving forest silence and Krsna's playful imitation might continue indefinitely if the inconceivable pastime potency did not remain active and present a new sequence.

See, tigers and lions emerge from the forest's deepest interior and walk onto the paths of the open woodland. The love in their eyes for the dark beauty must be seen. But Krsna, glory to this pastime of the playful Lord, runs away crying as if terrified: “Dada! A lion has come! Brothers, run!” The boys have no fear. Clapping and laughing, they gaze joyfully at the fierce animals, approach them, and call, “Kannu, come back here!” Kannu must return, for His fear was only a performance. Everyone knows that nonviolence is eternally established among Vrndavana's wild beasts and that, by the power of Krsna's lotus feet, a river of affection always flows even among creatures naturally hostile to one another.

Krsna simply wished to play. He thought, “All My friends will laugh, but if even one or two are startled by My cry and run with Me, then we shall see.” His wish, however, is not fulfilled. The desire of the infallible great Lord, by whose slightest eyebrow movement countless universes are created, maintained, and dissolved, remains incomplete. This itself is the astonishing pastime that enchants the three worlds. Smiling gently, He returns to His friends, while the tigers, lions, and other animals roll in affection near His lotus feet.

“He imitates cakoras, krauncas, cakravakas, bharadvajas, and peacocks, and before tigers and lions He behaves as though afraid.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.13)

He imitates the calls and movements of cakoras, krauncas, cakravakas, peacocks, and other forest birds. In this way the abode of mercy plays.

Creating ever-new amusements, Krsna wanders an unknown distance into the forest. He does not rest even for a moment, and the boys feel not the slightest fatigue. Their play continues without interruption, with Balarama joining every game. He is the strongest of the group, yet if the beautiful weariness born of play appears anywhere, it first comes upon Rohini's son's fair lotus face. The moment this happens, Krsna abandons everything, encircles Balarama's neck with His left arm, and wipes His elder brother's face with His yellow cloth held in His right lotus hand. “Dada, You look tired now!”

No one can decide whether Balarama is truly tired, whether the affection surging within appears as beads of perspiration, or whether His wish to stop Krsna's play and make Him rest takes the form of fatigue. Yet Balarama certainly replies, “Yes, brother Krsna, I am tired.” This happens today, so another arrangement begins. The party immediately sits in the cool, soothing shade of a great banyan nearby, and loving service to Balarama begins. He must lie with His head in the lap of an older cowherd boy because His younger brother wishes it. Balarama must follow that wish completely.

Balarama knows that if He opposes His younger brother even slightly, Krsna's restless activity will not stop. Only by obeying each loving command can He keep Him seated nearby for a while. He therefore accepts every request without any “but” or “no.” The boy's lap becomes a lovely pillow, and the forest has already spread a bed of soft green grass. Balarama's beautiful blue cloth falls behind His back and serves as the covering for that grass bed. The dark beauty takes His elder brother's lotus feet into His lap. This is His arrangement for giving rest to His brother, dearer than millions of lives, and Balarama must accept it exactly as arranged.

Krsna begins massaging Balarama's feet with His supremely tender lotus hands. The condition of Rohini's son's heart cannot easily be measured. An impartial observer can say only that Balarama alone can restrain the mighty storm of affection within His heart while continuing to accept every rasa-filled service from His younger brother. After removing His brother's fatigue through long service, Krsna checks whether He has fallen asleep. Balarama still gazes at Him with the same enchanted eyes. Krsna commands, “Subala, take Dada's soles into your lap and press them just as I do. I shall fan Him. He has not yet fallen asleep.” Taking a little fan made from a banyan leaf in His right hand, He fans Balarama's face. Still no drowsiness enters His lotus eyes. “Dada, I shall stroke Your head. Then You will surely sleep.” While continuing to fan Him, Krsna strokes His beautiful hair with His left lotus hand. His charming eyes hold such love-filled eagerness to bring even a little heaviness to His brother's eyelids.

“Sometimes, when His noble elder brother was tired from playing and lay with His head upon a cowherd boy's lap, Krsna personally gave Him rest by massaging His feet and rendering other services.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.14)

As the two brothers wandered in the forest and Rama's body grew slightly weary, the abode of compassion pressed His feet with soft lotus hands.

This time Balarama's eyes half close, not from sleep but from a flood of love. Again and again He opens them and looks at His younger brother as before. Suddenly Krsna exclaims in His honeyed voice, “Enough, Dada! Now I know the way. You will certainly sleep happily.” At once He removes the flute from His belt, places it upon His lips, and begins to fill it with melody. The next moment Balarama's lotus eyes close like buds.

The sound spreads through every part of the woodland, and no moving or unmoving forest dweller can withstand its divinely intoxicating effect. Through the path of every ear, an indescribable river of nectar surges into the heart, while every eye fills with the emerald-dark form of the flute player. Even the enchanting flutist, Vrndavana's wanderer, sways helplessly in bliss while seated beside His elder brother.

He places the flute at His shining face and perfects its melody. Hearing it, the forest creatures who possess ears become enchanted. The wanderer of Vraja's forest is immersed in supreme delight. Birds, beasts, and all beings are captivated as they behold the Lord's beauty.

Tree branches join to form a lovely canopy of green leaves. Beneath it flow the boys' sweet dance and rasa-filled music. The dark beauty is the leader, principal actor, and foremost singer upon this forest stage. He gives the inspiration and performs the invocation, scattering tiny, highly fragrant forest flowers from His reddish palms tinted with blue. Immediately the countless boys begin a coordinated dance.

Vidyadharas and their wives watch through openings in the foliage and realize, “Compared with the art expressed through these boys' bodies, our knowledge of cari movements and other dance subjects is useless. Our pride in being dancers is false. True dance exists only among these companions of Vrajendra's son.” Gandharvas and their wives experience the same when the boys joyfully sing the varied notes of many ragas and raginis and begin musical contests. The children may be unable to name the modes, yet it seems that all the skill with which the daughter of the mountain king created melody has taken visible form behind their honeyed voices.

What would happen to the hosts of Vidyadharas and Gandharvas if this festival of dance and song continued long? The performers are children, and their moods change quickly. Some younger boys stop dancing and singing, assume striking poses, and slap their arms in challenge. The same theater turns into a wrestling arena, where countless beautiful pairs become absorbed in combat. It is as though the charming river that a moment ago flowed with a melodious murmur now roars under the rains, and a powerful current of heroic fury courses through the same place.

Where is Krsna, the master actor, group leader, and life of the boys? After opening the performance, announcing His friends' dance, and spreading the flowers, He goes to Balarama and stands holding His brother's lotus hand. Their lotus faces shine with bright laughter, and from Their mouths repeatedly comes praise, individually for each friend and collectively for all. Just now the dark beauty heard hundreds and thousands of praises for Himself from these companions. Who can say how strong His desire is to return even a little of that gift? This is a lovely opportunity. Rama and Syama call out with playful voices that nevertheless declare eternal truth: “Wonderful! Their music has crushed the Gandharvas' pride. Vidyadharas, your dance has become an object of ridicule before theirs! My friends who conquer the three worlds, who can stand against you in battle?”

Note: The scriptural convention of dance is that the dancer scatters a fragrant substance over the dancing place before beginning.

English translation

“Ah, by singing they slight the Gandharvas, by dancing they parody the Vidyadharas, and by fighting they conquer the three worlds.” (Vaisnava-tosani)

Such was sometimes the program of Vrajendra's son's joyous forest play:

“Holding hands and laughing, the two brothers praised the cowherd boys as they danced, sang, leaped about, and wrestled with one another.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.15)

The boys protest, “Brothers, the joy of wrestling remains incomplete. What use are these holds if Kannu does not enter the arena? Let Kannu come, and Dau Dada too, and then we shall see.” Their lives are bound upon one string. A vibration anywhere must resound alike everywhere. During the dance Krsna's ankle bells sounded at every turn of the rhythm, and during each boy's song the flute repeatedly touched His lips, as if to absorb the melody. Its familiar, heart-churning sound poured through the holes. Thus every boy felt that Kanhaiya gave not only verbal praise but active support to their dancing and singing. During the wrestling, however, He seems only a spectator standing apart. There is no joy without bringing Him among them.

One boy pulls the dark beauty into the arena, and another seizes Balarama's hands and challenges Him. Balarama grapples at once, but Krsna takes His time. Laughing, He gathers His scattered black curls and ties them behind His head. He tucks the upper cloth of His yellow garment into His sash and ties His lower cloth above both knees. Only then does He change stance before His opponent. Who can portray in words the beauty of His largely uncovered, dark, restless limbs?

The great Lord's wrestling begins, not with one boy but with innumerable friends. A material mind cannot resolve this, yet it occurs exactly so. Every child truly experiences, “My beloved Kannu grappled with me first,” or “After that boy threw Him, He came to throw me and hide His shame,” or “After pinning that boy, He came proudly to conquer me too.” In his own view, each is no less strong than Krsna and accepts His challenge without hesitation. Saying, “Come on!” he locks arms with Him. Together the boy and the dark beauty could defeat even a rutting elephant.

Sometimes they meet in wrestling, pushing and driving their feet like intoxicated elephants.

Stokakrsna and a few boys of his age do not enjoy wrestling. When it is proposed, they lose enthusiasm, feeling that it is a dreadful assault upon their Kanhaiya's supremely tender limbs. Yet the opinion of a small minority cannot suppress the large group. They repeatedly signal Krsna to reject the proposal, but He will not listen and cannot resist the game. Helplessly, they look with compassion at the support of their lives and glare resentfully at the unruly boys. Today, as Vrajendra's son arranges His curls and tightens His clothes, Stokakrsna repeatedly signals Him to remain apart as before.

The dark beauty laughs, dances His charming eyes, touches His chest, and signals only, “Watch, I shall throw them all at once.” What can Stoka do but remain silent? He stands to one side with a sulking face. Yet patience has a limit, especially for one whose life is always absorbed in Krsna through the rasa-filled feeling of finding happiness solely in His happiness. The density of this feeling determines patience's boundary. Friendship is denser than service, parental love denser than friendship, and the current of conjugal love denser still. Each rasa also gives rise to streams suited to its own nature. A single rasa does not appear identically everywhere. According to its object it flows straight or crooked, and its density develops accordingly. The greater its density, the narrower the boundary of patience.

In Stoka the most tender transformation of friendship is eternally established, so exceptional density must develop. He is also nearly the youngest and is the son of Nandana, Maharaja Nanda's youngest brother. This family bond makes his sense of possession still more tender. How long can he endure the repeated blows struck upon his Kanhaiya by rival wrestlers? At last he roars, “Subala! Dau Dada! Leave these insolent boys. They have no shame. Can you not see what they have done to my Kanhaiya?”

Stoka is exceedingly dear to Krsna and looks like His very image. His roar fills everyone's ears and draws every mind. At once all are swept into a peculiar, love-filled remorse: “Kannu, brother, You are so tired!” The wrestling stops exactly where it is. Krsna's hair has again become loose and disordered. His whole dark body is wet with perspiration, and His breath from fatigue is plainly rapid. The boys' hearts writhe with one thought: how to remove all His weariness in a single moment. There is no time to delay.

Mandalibhadra and Bhadravardhana take His arms and lead Him to the dense, cool shade of a nearby asvattha tree, followed by Gobhata, Kulavira, and their friends. Sri Krsnacandra is one, yet it is equally certain that Visala, Vrsabha, Jambi, and Devaprastha lead Him in another direction beneath a banyan. Varuthapa, Mandara, Kusumapida, Manibandha, and other boys take shelter beneath another great tree, and one Krsna is truly with them too. Candana, Kunda, and Kalinda proceed toward a row of kadambas, surrounding one Krsna on every side. Likewise go the party of Dama, Vasudama, and Sridama; the group of Kinkini, Stokakrsna, Amsa, and Bhadrasena; and the company of Subala, Arjuna, Gandharva, and Vasanta. Each takes one Sri Krsnacandra with them.

Note: Stokakrsna is the son of Nandana, Maharaja Nanda's youngest brother.

All the groups proceed with a Krsna of their own. One goes beneath the asoka's shade, another beside the lovely basin around a mango tree, and another beneath the broad expanse of a plaksa. The loving anguish of the countless boys manifests the one Vrajendra's son in so many forms. Each experiences only that Sri Krsnacandra walks with his own group.

They all know how to give Him rest, for the dark beauty Himself taught them by serving His elder brother. They imitate Him and add special arrangements. Within moments they collect heaps of stemless petals and tender new leaves. At the base of each lofty tree they construct a delightful bed from leaf tips and flowers. Sri Krsnacandra lies upon it with His head in a dear friend's lap. The boys had made a lovely flower pillow, but the dark beauty feels more happiness in His intimate friend's lap, places His head there, and closes His eyes.

“Sometimes, exhausted by wrestling, He takes shelter beneath a tree, lies upon a bed of leaves, and uses a cowherd boy's lap as His pillow.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.16)

When tired, He comes beneath a tree, where they make a very soft bed of new leaves. Sometimes they make a couch of leaves at a tree's roots, and the Lord of the three worlds sleeps with a cowherd's lap as His pillow.

At the same time the one Sri Krsnacandra rests equally in countless places upon beds of flowers and leaves made by His friends. Every desire is fulfilled simultaneously, and Krsna, abode of infinite majesty, accepts all their offerings of love at once. The bond of His friends' love tugs slightly upon the cloth of His childhood absorption, so the self-willed covering over His limitless majesty seems to move aside a little. Thus the great Lord, Vrajendra's son, performs this resting pastime through innumerable personal manifestations.

No boy has the slightest awareness that such a wonder is occurring. If he knew, his joy would vanish. The dark beauty has made this new arrangement solely to give them equal joy at once. A child's indescribable happiness rests in the thought, “My beloved Kannu rests upon the flower bed I made.” That happiness would end if his mind touched even a trace of Krsna's majesty. The boys therefore do not know and never will. Yet the truth remains that the one son of Vrajesvara simultaneously sleeps beneath countless trees upon flower beds spread by the boys.

The Vaisnava-tosani explains: “For their pleasure, unnoticed by each of them, He lies in many forms through a special manifestation of His own potency awakened by each one's love.” The Subodhini says: “To perfect the happiness of all of them simultaneously, Bhagavan lay upon every bed.”

Now service to the feet of boundless Sri Krsnacandra begins. With great fondness the cowherd boys take His lotus feet into their laps and touch them with tender fingers, pressing gently and pleasantly to remove His fatigue. Some take fresh fans made of flowers and new leaves and serve Him with cool, soft, fragrant breezes over His blue-lotus face and sapphire-radiant limbs. Others sit at His sides and, following the method used after wrestling, pleasantly massage His shoulders, arms, lotus hands, waist, and other limbs, striving to erase every trace of fatigue in a moment.

English translation

At this time only one desire fills the boys' minds, spotless as the clear autumn sky: “What service will make my beloved Kanhaiya free from fatigue at once?” Who can explain to them that no fatigue, pain, or disease can ever find even the smallest place in their Kanhaiya's body of eternity, consciousness, and bliss; that His form is beyond nature and time; and that they and their bodies are of the same spiritual character? Even if they heard it, though eternally free of all sin from beginningless time, they would never absorb the truth.

Who is purer than they? The impure seed of desire for personal happiness has never sprouted in their minds. Yet even in this perpetual purity they cannot comprehend the nature of their brother's body. Their beginningless and endless existence rests upon one principle: “May my beloved Kanhaiya receive happiness from me.” If awareness of His nature as eternal consciousness and bliss arose, the door to this essence of rasa would close and their wishes would remain unfulfilled. The wishes of playful Krsna would also be frustrated, for He has come, or rather has remained from beginningless time and will remain forever, to drink continuously and with perpetual thirst the nectar of His own eternal pastime rasa.

For this reason the Supreme Reality, Sri Krsnacandra, eternally appears before them in the form suited to their mood of service. Nothing ever obstructs their service to Him, which always proceeds according to their hearts' longing. Now too they serve to remove their intimate friend's weariness:

“Some massaged the feet of that great soul, while other sinless boys fanned Him.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.17)

As He lies with His head in a friend's lap, one greatly fortunate boy rolls and massages His feet. One takes the soft feet in his hands and rubs them; another fans Him with a flower fan. Some greatly meritorious boy makes a breeze suited to His pleasure.

It is astonishing that these exceedingly restless boys can create such a peaceful atmosphere. No sound is heard except the calls of forest birds. Each fears that the slightest speech will keep Kanhaiya from sleeping. Every service proceeds in wondrous silence. They take such care that even dry leaves do not rustle beneath a moving foot.

But now Sri Krsnacandra opens His eyes and laughs. When asked, He says, “Brothers, what can I do? Sleep did not come. How long should I keep My eyes closed? You tell Me.” How could the dark beauty truly sleep? The boys watched without blinking as He served Balarama, and at once the wish awakened in them, “We too shall serve Kanhaiya just like that.” If He fell asleep before they performed every service He had offered His elder brother, the pictures of their feelings inscribed upon the heart-cloth of His inconceivable pastime potency would be left without value. How could He forget to accept their loving service? Even if childhood absorption made Him forget, that potency would not. At the proper time everything happens by itself, and now it has happened.

The boys anxiously consider what to do. They cannot fill a flute with transcendental melody like the dark beauty. Long ago, on the day Aghasura's movement ended, they decided: “When Kannu plays the flute, none of us should imitate Him. Otherwise we shall lose the full enjoyment of this supreme happiness. We may defeat Kannu in other things, and He will certainly lose, but we should not compete with His flute.” How, then, can they make Him sleep? “He put Dau Dada to sleep with the flute.” The simple boys, their hearts softened by affection, worry without limit.

At last a remedy occurs to them: “If not the flute, we shall sing Kannu to sleep.” The moment the thought arises, nectar begins to rain from their throats. Each sings in a slow, exceedingly enchanting, sweet, love-moistened voice whatever absorbs his mind: songs born from his own feelings, songs of Krsna's fame heard from the women of Vraja, or compositions heard from the bards, panegyrists, and actors of Vraja's king.

“Others, their minds softened by affection, slowly sang pleasing songs suited to that great soul.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.18)

One sings in an exceedingly sweet voice and brings sleep to the dark prince.

The boys' eyes rest within Krsna's open lotus eyes, while their minds fill with the honey stream of songs about Him that flows from their mouths and returns through their ears. Throughout the forest, or rather through every particle of the worlds past and future, this sound scatters like a wondrous celestial river. Whoever wishes may drink repeatedly and quench the soul's thirst:

“Victory to Krsnacandra, abode of compassion, the bliss-giving sun for the lotus forest of Vraja's people. His limbs are dark like ever-fresh rain clouds. He is the abode of beauty, more lovely than millions of Cupids. The base of His strong arms grants fearlessness to the gods, and His yellow cloth shines like lightning. His black, white, and red eyes are intoxicated with delight. His gentle smile and sweet speech shower nectar. Earrings of immeasurable brilliance adorn His ears and spill their glow across His cheeks. Nectar rains from the flute at His mouth. Nanda's son, the life of His own people, is eternally immersed in the rasa of childhood play, an ocean of bliss in Gokula.

“The two charming brothers, fair and dark, take graceful boys with Them. Going from house to house, They steal milk and yogurt, Their faces and bodies bright with jeweled ornaments. They eat, smear one another, spill the food, laugh, and run away, leaving each householder astonished upon returning home. Sometimes They wander holding the tails of calves. Golden bells ring sweetly at Their waists. They play as toys before the eyes of cowherd men and women, Their lotus faces shining as They turn and laugh. Yogurt spots cover Their faces, Their limbs are gray with dust, and even now Their steps defeat the gait of Cupid.”

English translation

“With an amulet at His neck and anklets ringing upon His feet, He plays in the courtyard of Nagara Dasa's heart.

“Show me once the flash of Your crown, the sway of Your varied earrings, the dance of Your brows, and the movement of Your eyes. O forest-garlanded Lord, I offer myself to You. Come once along my path and graze the cows. Wise Kanhaiya, treasure of beauty and virtue, play Your flute and cool the burning of my body. O youthful son of Nanda, thief of my heart, peacock-feathered, flute-bearing dark beloved, come this way.

“See the crown upon His forehead, see the sparkling moon ornament, see the burst of beauty, and drink the rasa of His form. See His broad eyes, the gunja garland at His neck, and His nectar-fruit lips, and let the mind fall silent. See the movement of His earrings, the motion of His eyelids, and the power of His curls, and surrender everything. See the end of His yellow cloth, hear the mighty call of His flute, look toward the dark one, and make seeing Him your only act.”

This is an exceedingly brief image of Sri Krsnacandra's divinely divine and supremely enchanting forest wandering. Who can recognize Vrajendra's son exactly while He performs these pastimes? His Yogamaya, expert in arranging impossibilities, covers His majestic nature. He has come to drink pastime rasa, so He plays exactly like a natural cowherd child.

Although Rama, the goddess of fortune, eternally serves His lotus feet in Vaikuntha and unequaled majesty is His constant companion, Sri Krsnacandra becomes absorbed in many childhood games with His friends just as an ordinary boy plays endlessly with his companions. When He distributes the supreme destination to demons, that covering may contract slightly, an opening may appear, and His boundless majesty may look through it for a moment. Otherwise the dark beauty remains forever intoxicated by drinking pastime rasa:

“Thus His true nature and course concealed by His own potency, He imitated the condition of a cowherd's son through His deeds. Though the goddess of fortune caresses His tender feet, the Lord played with village boys just like a village child.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.15.19)

Thus He concealed Himself by His own potency and remained for a long time, while fools could not understand. At intervals Hari became manifest, but only for the instant in which He killed a demon. Like an ordinary child of gentle character, the Lord continued His eternal pastimes in Vraja.

He wanders in this way, like a simple cowherd among cows. Sages ponder Him in their minds, yet the Vedas cannot reach His limit. Laksmi, the lovely goddess, obtains His graceful feet and fondles them as a poor person cherishes newly found treasure. The Lord who enters Siva's mind only after a very long time wanders so freely in this forest.
