The queen of Vraja walked toward the tulasī grove carrying lamps arranged upon a golden plate. Kṛṣṇacandra followed behind, holding the end of her veil in his tender right hand, but his gaze rested upon the cows that had returned from the forest only moments before and upon the calves eagerly drinking milk. Mature cowherd protectors stood beside the cows, staffs shining in their hands. They waited to lead the calves to their proper places once they were satisfied. This sight suddenly awakened a new feeling in Kṛṣṇacandra's heart. He began to think, “Perhaps I too might go to the forest to graze the cows. Evening would come, and after returning from the forest I would protect them in this same way.”

Kṛṣṇacandra, the Supreme Brahman and highest Person, the Lord himself and source of bliss, has come to Vraja precisely to drink rasa. In the laps of Vraja's royal couple, in Nanda's courtyard, along the lanes of Vraja, within the cowherd women's homes, and in Gokula's groves, he has already released rivers of rasa and savored the rasa of early childhood. Now the desire to drink the rasa of boyhood has arisen within him. This desire alone was needed, for his inconceivable supreme potency of divine pastime had long been waiting with every circumstance prepared. Kṛṣṇacandra's beginningless and endless pastime has appeared in the world age after age in this same sequence: early childhood in Gokula, boyhood and adolescence in the forest of Vṛndā. Its commencement was now at hand.

In an instant, the divine pastime potency caused the plan to move from Bṛhadvan to Vṛndāvana to arise within the heart of Upananda, Vraja's minister of state and Nanda's eldest brother. That day the lord of the cowherds had invited all the leading elder cowherds of Vraja to deliberate upon affairs of the realm. Upananda was going to take part, following the very path beside the tulasī grove where Kṛṣṇacandra stood near his mother, gazing at the beauty of the rows of lamps. The moment Upananda saw him, his thoughts began to stir, and inwardly he settled upon a new proposal. This was not a concern of that day alone. On the very day Pūtanā came, he had decided that Bṛhadvan must be abandoned. Since then, almost every day, he had wandered through distant forest regions for the single purpose of finding a suitable place where all of Nanda's Vraja could leave Bṛhadvan and settle elsewhere. His search had ended the previous day. After examining Vṛndāvana, Girirāja's vast domain, and every one of its corners, he had concluded that it alone was supremely delightful in every respect and was not very far away. Four watches earlier, however, he had intended to inform everyone only on some later occasion, after a little delay, and not to carry out the plan until summer. But the moment he saw Nanda's son on the road, his thinking suddenly changed. For him, the principal purpose of that day's assembly became nothing but the journey to Vṛndāvana. With this purpose, he took his seat upon the council platform.

They had not, however, been able to determine where such a pleasant place might be found for Vraja to settle, and so they had remained completely silent. That day they too came by the same path, and all of them saw Yaśodā's son. A powerful inspiration arose in each of their hearts to express his thoughts that very day. They did not realize that Yaśodā's emerald-dark child had dwelt within them as the indwelling Lord and directed them since beginningless time, or that this inspiration was his as well. Yet inwardly they resolved to disclose the idea to the lord of Vraja without delay. Upon entering the royal assembly they told Upananda what was in their hearts and immediately received his full support. When the king of Vraja, having completed his daily observances and holding Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma in his lap, came and took his seat, Upananda and all the brothers placed the proposal before him and the other honored elder cowherds:

Before beginning his address, Upananda's gaze fell upon Kṛṣṇacandra seated in the lap of the lord of Vraja. The vision of that blue lotus entered Upananda's deepest heart, and his eyes closed as though his very life breath had shut the doors lest someone carry away that treasure of beauty. In a state resembling partial absorption, Upananda spoke at length about conditions in Bṛhadvan, the reasons for leaving their ancestral home, and the many advantages of Vṛndāvana. The substance of his speech was this: “It has become exceedingly dangerous to remain in Bṛhadvan. Our enemies have gained full knowledge of our movements. Gokula belongs to all of us assembled here, and these two sons of the lord of Vraja, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, are the very support of all our lives. If they are safe, we all live. If these two children are lost, not a single creature in Vraja will remain alive. Therefore, all of us who desire Gokula's welfare must depart from here without delay precisely to preserve its good fortune intact. We should establish our dwelling elsewhere. One calamity after another keeps coming here, and each comes solely to harm these two children. All our own children remain with them, so harm to these two would mean the uprooting of the entire next generation of us cowherds. Let us consider this very seriously. Pūtanā, the slayer of children, came, and somehow Nanda's son was saved from that demoness. Surely it was only Śrī Hari's boundless mercy that the enormous cart fell aside instead of upon this child. Then the demon Tṛṇāvarta came. First he carried tender Nanda's son high into the sky, and afterward, through the consequence of his own deeds, he fell upon a rock and was shattered. There too the guardians of the worlds, no, the attendants of Śrī Nārāyaṇa himself, protected the child. Otherwise no one had held any hope for his life. Those two immense arjuna trees fell with this child between them, and all our children were there too. Yet once again Nanda's son was saved, and the other children suffered no injury. This protection also came from none but the infallible Śrī Hari. It is beyond human power for anyone to protect our children beneath the falling arjuna trees. Therefore, before some future evil wrought by a demon destroys Vraja, let us all take Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, our children, friends, wives, cattle, attendants, and all the rest, and go elsewhere. I have also thought fully about where we should go. After many months of unceasing effort, I have decided that we should all go to Vṛndāvana. For us cowherds, the first consideration is the welfare of the cows, and that forest, always filled with tender grasses and leaves, is altogether beneficial for the animals. With ever-fresh trees and innumerable tree-filled groves, Vṛndāvana remains perpetually verdant and dark green. Broad natural tracts are spread here and there so that our countless cowherd men and women and all our cattle can find ample shelter. The forest is adorned with lovely mountain ranges, and the beauty of Vṛndā's woodland, covered with grasses, vines, and other vegetation, is itself worth beholding. My own wish is that we leave today. Let the carts be made ready now and the cattle sent ahead without delay. This, of course, is only my proposal. Please consider it. Let it be done only if my plan pleases you all.”

We who desire Gokula's welfare must rise and leave this place, for great calamities are coming here that threaten the children's destruction.
This child was somehow delivered from the child-killing demoness. Surely it was by Hari's grace that the cart did not fall upon him.
This child was carried into danger high in the sky by the whirlwind demon. When the demon fell upon the rock, the child was protected by the lords of the gods.
That this child, or any of the others, did not die after passing between the two trees was also the protection of Acyuta.
Before some calamity-born danger overwhelms Vraja, let us take the children and go elsewhere with all our followers.
There is a forest named Vṛndāvana, newly grown and excellent for the animals. It is fit for cowherd men, cowherd women, and cows, and is blessed with a holy mountain, grasses, and plants.
Let us go there today. Yoke the carts without delay. If this pleases you, let the herds of cattle go ahead.

Some young cowherds leapt from their seats and hurried to the lord of Vraja, joining their palms and asking permission to arrange the journey at once. Everyone's gaze was now fixed upon Kṛṣṇacandra, and all called out in one voice, “To protect Kṛṣṇa, we must abandon Bṛhadvan without delay.” Their open, loving feeling moistened the lord of Vraja's eyes. Before this ardor and resolve of the cowherds, inspired by their longing for Kṛṣṇacandra's welfare, he bowed his head.

Thus, when the queen of Vraja heard Upananda's discourse, the glories of Vṛndāvana, and the unanimous decision to abandon Bṛhadvan immediately, immense joy arose within her heart as well. Veiled and surrounded by elderly cowherd women, she stood at one door of the assembly hall. As soon as the journey to Vṛndāvana was decided, she sent an attendant to bring Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma from the lord of Vraja. Hearing their mother's call, the two brothers climbed down from their father's lap and came to Queen Yaśodā. Their mother took them into the inner chambers, gave them delicious milk to drink, and arranged for them to sleep. But then a difficult question arose. What if the divine Paurṇamāsī refused to leave Bṛhadvan? How could the lord of Vraja depart and leave her there? All Vraja stood forever indebted to Goddess Paurṇamāsī.

It was only through the grace of this elderly renunciant that, in his advanced age, the lord of Vraja had received a son as incomparably beautiful and enchanting to the universe as a blue jewel. Goddess Paurṇamāsī had also been the first to come to Vraja and foretell that he would have a son. Every cowherd man and woman in Vraja honored her deeply, and no one ever disobeyed any command of hers. Leaving her behind was therefore impossible. The lord of Vraja immediately sent his younger brother Nandana to her leaf cottage. Upon hearing the whole situation, the goddess gladly agreed to go to Vṛndāvana herself. What more remained to be said? With extraordinary enthusiasm, all the cowherd men and women of Vraja began arranging the journey.

On that final moonlit night in Bṛhadvan, the air was filled with the jingling bracelets of the town's women, the tumult of countless carts, the cowherds' calls of “he he, ho ho,” and the sounds of great horns and conches. No one rested even for a moment. The cowherds busily carried vessels filled with yogurt, fresh butter, and ghee, jewel boxes, chests of clothing and ornaments, and their other household goods, placing them upon the carts standing outside on the royal road. The cowherd women gathered the articles and handed them to their husbands, sons, and others. As soon as one cart was filled, the cowherds pulled it into the departing line, brought another empty cart to the door, and began filling it. Even the children who had reached boyhood did not sleep that night, but lent their hands to the preparations. Rāma and Śyāma, of course, had fallen asleep under their mother's tender care. Once they were asleep, the queen of Vraja joined Rohiṇī in preparing for the journey to Vṛndāvana.

But there were innumerable attendants, and Śrī Rohiṇī was there. Who would allow Queen Yaśodā to work? She remained absorbed in only one task. Again and again she went to inspect every article Rāma and her blue jewel might need, making sure that nothing was left behind. She filled the chest of her blue jewel's toys herself. Each toy held a sweet memory, an enchanting recollection of one of his pastimes. The moment a toy came into her hand, its scene danced before the queen of Vraja's eyes and she became immersed in supreme bliss. The night passed. The cool, pleasant touch of dawn brought fresh energy to the weary cowherd men and women, but throughout all that time Mother Yaśodā had continued with this single task. Sometimes she put the toys into the chest, then took them out and scattered them, arranged them once more, and then removed them one by one and left them outside. From time to time she also went to look beside her blue jewel's sleeping couch. Only when Śrī Rohiṇī came and took even this task from her hands did she become aware that the sun, illuminator of the worlds, was about to rise. Rohiṇī also reminded her that before the journey she must bathe Rāma and her blue jewel, adorn them, feed them a morning meal, and have them ready. Yaśodā then entered the sleeping chamber and began to awaken her blue jewel:

Awake, O Mohana! The dawn has come. The lotuses have blossomed, the night lilies have closed, and the radiant thief of darkness has overcome the night.
All the cowherd boys stand calling you, and the sun has risen in the east. Hearing these words, Nanda's son awoke, and his mother then took him into her lap, says Sūra.
