At dawn today the night birds cried. Joy filled Gokula, and auspicious music sounded throughout the royal household.
Nanda wandered in overflowing happiness, joyfully summoning flowers and betel. Yaśodā blossomed in body and mind as she anointed and bathed priceless Kānha.
She dried His tiny face, His two tiny hands, and His tiny feet with the fold of a cloth. A jeweled necklace shone upon Kānha's neck, ornaments upon His limbs, and rings upon His fingers.
She placed an ornament upon His head, marked Him against the evil eye, lined His eyes, and dressed Him in a tunic. Śyāma quarreled with Mother, stammering and speaking in charming, jumbled sounds.
Grasping both His cheeks, she kissed His face and playfully spoke of His birthday. Sūrdās says: dark Śyāma, enchanter of the people of Vraja, had the birthday thread untied.

"At my word summon the brāhmaṇas, establish an auspicious hour, prepare festive garments, and adorn Him with ornaments. Bind rice grains and blades of dūrvā, tie my darling's birthday knot, and grant my eyes the blessing of beholding it.
"Bring a five-colored sari and let Mother dress the young bride. Let everyone dance with limbs thrilled by joy and increase the bliss." Calling the cowherd women, Nanda's queen explained the custom and said, "Why do you not hurry? Why delay?"

The only difference is that Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra is now one year older. The beauty of His divine limbs, His ever-fresh loveliness, and His sweetness have increased at every moment until they have multiplied millions upon millions of times. The joy of the townspeople, especially the beautiful women of Vraja, has become boundless. Dancing like waves upon an infinite and shoreless ocean of bliss, the women of Vraja have come to Nanda's house for the celebration. Singing sweet auspicious songs, they offer themselves to the sight of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra today:

The lovely women of Vraja overflowed with delight at Kānha's birthday and wished Him countless years. They sang auspicious, beautiful songs in lovely notes and melodies, filled with bliss and great joy.
Bearing golden, jewel-studded trays with sacred yellow pigment, yogurt, and heaps of flowers, they yearned to meet Him. They tied the Lord's birthday knot and broke blades of grass to ward away harm from that beauty. Sūrdās says: they crowded together, touching one another in their eagerness.

The celebration ended in the afternoon. Only after the worship of the brāhmaṇas, the honoring of guests and visitors, and the communal feast with relatives and family were complete did Queen Yaśodā permit Nīlamaṇi to go outside. Keeping Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra confined within the house until then was a great victory for Mother. She alone knew how difficult it had been.
"My darling, I shall give You a peacock made of jewels, and You can make it dance. Look! I have a diamond calf, a toy so beautiful that You will be amazed. I had it brought especially for You. Show it to Balarāma, for he has no toy like it." Distracting Nīlamaṇi with many such temptations, Mother passed two watches of the day, for He had to remain at home during the auspicious rites. She also feared that He might go out, create some disturbance in a gopī's home, and disrupt the festival.

As soon as Mother gave the word, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra bounded toward the festooned gateway, where His cowherd friends waited. Taking them with Him, He seemed to disappear within the dense rows of trees along the royal road. Neither Queen Yaśodā nor the cowherd women knew which way He had gone. The gopīs began preparing to return home, but each deliberately delayed in the secret hope that Nanda's son might have gone to her house behind her and would thus have time to create whatever disturbance He wished. Yet that day He went to none of their homes. He had gone to the house of one cowherd woman to begin an utterly new līlā.

A young cowherd woman sat alone at home while her entire household attended the birthday celebration. They had told her to finish the essential chores as quickly as possible and come to Nanda's house. Yet meditating upon Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, she became so forgetful that she even lost all memory that it was His birthday. Before her eyes He performed many playful deeds, and she watched. She no longer realized that this was an image within her mind, but experienced Nanda's son as truly present, playing with His companions. Eight ghaṭīs passed without her awareness. To awaken her, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra came directly to her home as soon as the celebration ended.

Hearing a tumultuous sound of joy in her home, the young cowherd woman's eyes opened. She saw Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra standing before her, illuminating the house with the radiance of a fresh raincloud. She could not decide whether she was awake or dreaming, but unprecedented delight filled her life. In a voice sweeter than the sweetest vīṇā, He said, "Why did you not come to My house? All the other cowherd women are there." Then He laughed. It seemed someone had poured nectar into her ears and released a stream of honey. Almost maddened, she rose and ran toward Him. He began to flee, but she came quick as lightning and caught one of His hands.
Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra grew afraid, wondering why she had caught Him and what she might do. He tried to free His hand, but she would not release it. Again and again He said, "Why have you caught Me? Let go. I am being delayed." She neither released Him nor answered, but only laughed. At last He devised a way to escape. With His other hand He pulled and broke the pearl necklace hanging across her breast. The pearls scattered upon the ground. Distracted, she went to gather them, and in that moment His hand slipped free and He ran away.
She picked up a few pearls and placed them in her veil, but then felt, "Ah! Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra has stolen the jewel of my mind and gone." Carrying the broken necklace, she immediately set out for Nanda's house as though utterly mad.

The doorway of the king of Vraja was still crowded with cowherd women. None wished to leave. Telling one another of Nanda's son's deeds, they were immersed in an ocean of happiness. The young woman passed among them and approached Queen Yaśodā. She stood silently for some time. The astonished queen asked why she had come, but she said nothing. Only when Yaśodā lovingly seated her nearby and stroked her head did she compose herself enough to say, "Mother, see! I was sitting alone at home when your Nīlamaṇi came and broke my pearl necklace."
At that moment Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra arrived, having returned for the jeweled peacock toy Mother had given Him and which He had forgotten to take. Mother called Him near and asked about the broken necklace. He gave a wholly truthful answer. Hearing what had happened, the cowherd women present filled with joy, and a smile covered Mother's lotus face. She lifted her sapphire into her lap, kissed His cheeks, and softly instructed Him in His ear. Then she removed the precious pearl necklace from her own neck and placed it in His hand.
"Here! If I broke your necklace, take this pearl necklace in return," Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra said as He placed it in the young woman's hand. Taking His jeweled peacock, He ran outside. Queen Yaśodā lifted the necklace and placed it around the woman's neck.

This occurred the following day. A traveling merchant came to Vraja with a chest of pearls and coral upon his head, intending to sell pearls. No, the inconceivable great power of the līlā of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, son of the king of Vraja, had summoned and brought him. Hawking his wares through the streets, he approached the royal assembly hall. The lord of Vraja's splendor dazzled his eyes. For a long time he gazed unsated upon the beauty of Nanda's palace and assembly hall. Then he lifted his chest and set out for his lodging, his heart trembling with the thought, "Who in this supremely divine, jewel-filled Vraja will purchase my insignificant pearls?" At that moment Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra appeared before him. Asking, "What are you selling?" He had the chest lowered and began looking at the pearls.

Mother does not know that all sovereignty, righteousness, fame, beauty, knowledge, and detachment dwell eternally and completely within her little Nīlamaṇi. He is the Lord Himself, and nothing is impossible for Him. At the beginning of creation He desired to bring forth the worlds and assumed the Puruṣa form composed of the great principle, ego, the eleven senses arising from the five subtle elements, and the five gross elements. He became the Lord reclining upon the Causal Ocean. While resting there, He expanded mystic sleep. A lotus then manifested from the lake of His navel, and from it arose Brahmā, lord of the progenitors, from whom all beings were created:

English translation
At the beginning, desiring to create the worlds, the Lord assumed the Puruṣa form, composed of the great principle and the other elements and endowed with sixteen parts.
As He lay upon the waters and expanded mystic sleep, Brahmā, lord of the creators of the universe, arose from the lotus lake of His navel.

Mother does not know that the līlā of her charming, dark, two-year-old son is infallible. Through līlā alone He creates the vast universe within Himself, sustains it, and finally withdraws it, yet remains unattached throughout. He dwells within the inner being of every creature but remains so concealed that only a rare soul knows Him. Hidden as the ruler of the senses and mind, He receives their objects yet remains untouched by them. He is supremely independent and governs all, while none governs Him. Just as an unknowing person cannot comprehend an actor's cues and intention, beings of clouded understanding cannot discover through reasoning the world of varied names and forms created by this child's resolve, nor His many wondrous līlās. His līlās are exceedingly difficult to comprehend:

He, whose līlā never fails, creates, sustains, and devours this universe, yet is not attached to it. Independent and hidden within all beings, the Lord of the six faculties receives the sixfold objects of perception.
No creature of poor understanding can comprehend the plans of the skillful Creator as He extends names and forms through mind and speech, any more than an ignorant observer can understand an actor's performance.

Had Queen Yaśodā known this mystery, she would not have been astonished by the pearl tree her sapphire created. Yet where is there room within the heart of the queen of Vraja, the eternal embodiment of condensed parental love, even to investigate such majesty? Whenever Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's divine sovereignty comes to reveal itself to Mother, it is swept away from a distance by even the smallest wave of her parental love. So be it.

English translation
The queen of Vraja remained standing in stunned silence, but the news quickly spread through the town. Groups of beautiful cowherd women came running just as they were. They could not believe their eyes, yet Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's delight could not be contained. Dancing, He filled His cupped hands with pearls and poured them into the veil of each young woman who approached. Six and a half watches earlier, they had longed for one pearl touched by His hand. Now the son of the king of Vraja filled their veils with heaps upon heaps of pearls.

English translation
Countless cowherds and the lord of Vraja also beheld the pearl tree. The king of Vraja thought, "That merchant was not a mortal. A man from the realm of the Siddhas must have come in that form, or this is the divine power of my chosen Lord, Śrī Nārāyaṇa." His heart filled at the remembrance of Nārāyaṇa, and the queen of Vraja consoled her mind in the same way.

English translation
The pearl tree vanished, but the pearls remained exactly as they were. To test whether the event had been real or a dream, the young women strung the pearls into necklaces and always wore them upon their hearts. From each pearl they experienced Śrī Kṛṣṇa's supremely blissful touch, and within each they perceived Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's form inscribed. The pearl necklace became the necklace of their very lives. Yet no one truly knew the inner meaning of this līlā:

Gods, human beings, and sages do not know its secret. Even Brahmā and the others cannot fathom it through reflection. Sūrdās says: the women of Vraja strung and wore the necklace born from this līlā of the Lord.
