The terror of Kaliya Lake seemed reflected in the dark beauty's charming eyes, or rather pierced them. “This poisonous abyss is a yojana in length and breadth. Even the gods cannot easily cross it. It is exceedingly deep, and its water, like an ocean free from ebb and flow, remains undisturbed. Yet it is empty of aquatic beasts and birds. Its fathomless mass of water resembles a cloud-covered sky. The shore is filled with many large holes inhabited by serpents and is therefore inaccessible to travelers. Smoke from the fire produced by the serpents' breath surrounds it. The animals of Vraja cannot use its water, and those who approach in thirst cannot drink it. Even the immortals who bathe three times daily have abandoned its use. Birds cannot pass over it through the sky. Grass and leaves carried down by gusts are instantly burned by the power of its poison. For four kos around the lake the land is in a dreadful condition. Even mighty gods cannot enter that boundary. The flames of its terrible poisonous fire have burned every tree and vine.”

“A yojana long and broad, impossible even for the gods to cross, it was deep and held unshaken water like a motionless sea. Deserted by water beasts and aquatic birds, it was filled with fathomless water like a sky filled with clouds. Its shores were painful to approach, being filled with great serpent holes, and it was surrounded by smoke from the fire born of poison. Its water could not be used by animals or drunk by those seeking water. The gods who bathe three times daily had abandoned it. Even sky-going birds could not cross above it, and grass falling into its water seemed to ignite from its power. For more than a yojana on every side it was unapproachable even to gods, and its dreadful poisonous fire set the trees ablaze.” (Harivamsa, Visnu-parva 11.42-47)

See how the water of this Kaliya Lake in the daughter of the sun boils at this very moment, like extremely hot water churning and revolving in a huge vessel upon a stove. A few lost birds fly near, but air touched by the poisonous water reaches them, and they faint and fall into the lake. How could stationary creatures around it remain alive? No deer or other moving animal driven by fate toward its shore can survive. Wind touches the poisonous waves, carries droplets of toxic water, and burns them lifeless.

“Within the Kalindi was a lake belonging to Kaliya whose water boiled from poisonous fire, so that birds flying above fell into it. Moving and stationary beings upon its bank died when touched by wind bearing droplets from its poisonous waves.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.4-5)

Near where Yamuna flowed was a lake of immeasurable depth. Its water burned with poisonous fire, and flying birds fell into it. Wind rose after touching the water and scattered poisonous drops. Innumerable moving and unmoving beings within a yojana burned and died.

Those unfit for Vrndavana were then consumed by the flames of poisonous water. The inaccessible lake, a hundred bows across, lay beside Yamuna's current. There the arrogant and wrathful black serpent lived. When restless waves met the wind, the entire forest burned and fierce toxic flames scorched flocks of birds in the sky. Trees near the bank could not endure the gusts of poison. Seeing these countless calamities, the father of the universe prepared to leap.

Yet one kadamba tree stands upon the shore of that desolate, joyless lake, and its unique verdure enters Vrajendra's son's lotus eyes. Not one of its hundreds of lovely branches has ever wilted in the poisonous blaze, nor has a single leaf been scorched. It continually spreads a sacred fragrance that delights Vraja's residents even from afar. Completely transcending the rules of time, it always remains equally charming, soothing, and cool. During rains, autumn, early winter, late winter, spring, and summer, through all twelve months, its limbs bend beneath flowers. It remains forever in bloom, illuminating the ten directions.

Why does this impossible event occur? Why is dreadful poison powerless against the tree? Because this greatly fortunate king of kadambas waits in sacred expectation for the future touch of Sri Krsnacandra's lotus feet. It is adorned with the incomparable fortune of someday receiving the touch of the lotus-beautiful feet of Vraja's prince: “Because it was destined to receive the touch of Sri Krsna's feet, it alone did not wither upon that bank.” (Bhavartha-dipika)

Such is the glory of touching Krsna's feet. If the touch is actually obtained, what more can be said? Yet even if the fortune is merely ordained, even if Krsna's power of grace schedules such a supremely rare meeting for thousands upon thousands of ages in the future, what greater fulfillment can life possess? The sidelong glance of Vrajendra's son's inconceivable pastime potency eternally preserves a wondrous, beginningless and endless list of instruments for His play. This kadamba has a place upon it. The list records that in the distant future, at the close of a certain Dvapara age, Vraja's prince will climb this tree in the delight of childhood and leap from it into the daughter of Kalinda's poisonous lake to perform the pastime of subduing Kaliya. How could Kaliya's venom ever injure it?

Simply when the name of Vrajendra's son appears upon the tongue or enters the ear, when even an imagined ray of His world-enchanting form rises in the mind, or when a helpless, anguished soul inwardly takes shelter of His cool, supremely peaceful lotus feet just once with the thought, “Lord, I am Yours,” the flames of the serpent of worldly existence are stilled forever. In brief, this happens through any contact, by inconceivable fortune, with His name, form, pastimes, or qualities. What then can Kaliya's flames do to one whom Vraja's prince will personally touch with His feet?

“Krsna's feet will touch this tree. Climbing it, He will punish this wicked serpent. When such is the kadamba's destiny, how can poisonous water touch it?”

Therefore the kadamba remains wholly unharmed while continually surrounded by poison's terrible flames. Bearing ever-new joy within, it constantly unfolds leaves and flowers. For an unknown span of time it has adorned itself with leaves and prepared the pathways of its flower-eyes to invite the dark beauty.

English translation

The kadamba calls, “Come, my Lord, and fulfill the longing of my endless life.”

There is another explanation for why Kaliya's poisonous fire could not burn the tree, and the dark beauty will give this explanation a place in the river of pastime rasa flowing from His childhood absorption. Where could the supreme example of modesty appear if not in Sri Krsnacandra, the Supreme Person? Immersed in the spotless ocean of pastime rasa, He has placed His infinite majesty entirely behind Him, submerged it, and adorned Himself with fresh, charming innocence. While tasting those waves and giving His own people the supreme bliss inherent in their nature, how could He connect the glory of His own foot-touch with this kadamba through words from His own mouth?

He will therefore give importance to the second explanation at that moment, and by this thread the curtain hanging upon the stage of play will move aside to reveal the next scene. The explanation is this: On the day the gods of heaven had been defeated and victorious Garuda was carrying the vessel of nectar toward the realm of the serpents, he felt inwardly prompted to sit for a moment upon a branch of this kadamba with the nectar jar and briefly rest there. Contact with nectar made the tree immortal, so Kaliya's poisonous fire could not harm it in the least. “Another Purana says that Garutman alighted upon it while bringing the nectar.” (Bhavartha-dipika)

The moment the cowherd boys' songs of praise cease, before any other pastime can occur, Krsna casts His gracious glance upon the lake's terrifying condition and upon the lovely kadamba waiting in anguish. Rather, His majestic potency, seeing an opportunity to offer humble service, turns His eyes toward it. For a few moments the currents of His heart become joined with majesty, and this thought vibrates within Vrajendra's son:

“For this very purpose I dwell openly in Vraja and have accepted birth among cowherds: to restrain these wicked souls who follow evil paths. I shall climb this kadamba in the playfulness of a child, leap into the dreadful lake, and subdue Kaliya.” (Harivamsa, Visnu-parva 11.58-59)

The dark beauty accepts only this small service from His majestic potency and then again flows as before upon sweet waves. Such is the nature of Vraja's playful darling. He accepts the services His eternal companion, the majestic potency, offers while keeping herself covered, but she cannot repeatedly touch His heart in a manifest form. Krsna does not desire an admixture of majesty in His innocent, rasa-filled current of play that enchants the universe.

He therefore immediately ends that majestic contemplation and once again dives and rises in the ocean of pastimes surging with the waves of childhood absorption. Its restless waves carry Him swiftly toward the pastime of subduing Kaliya, with His countless friends flowing behind Him. The boys' enthusiasm grows fresher at every moment. Had those simple children known or even guessed Kanhaiya's plan, their delight would have ended instantly, and they would not have allowed their beloved Kannu to take a single step in that direction.

Yet who knows how the edge of the inconceivable pastime potency begins to move behind Krsna's restless glance on every such occasion? The breeze from that movement makes the supremely bright flame of the boys' knowledge flicker, so they see the true situation without seeing it. Moreover, they have never learned to withhold support from any proposal of their brother Kannu. With all their life's enthusiasm, they always follow every wish of the dark beauty.

Thus even today, upon the poisonous shore of Kaliya Lake and despite having just crossed death under the poison's influence and returned, they feel no fear. Each boy inwardly forms a fresh desire, and every eye holds the purest, simplest longing: “Let us see what my Kannu says and does now.”

The radiance of the smile eternally dwelling upon Krsna's reddish lips changes slightly, and He looks somewhat grave. Before an eyelid can fall, however, His eyes grow more restless than before. His right arm points toward Kaliya Lake, and with His forefinger indicating the serpent's dwelling, He begins to speak. His voice carries a new gravity, yet the simplicity of childhood and a sweetness that shames the vina continue to flow. In one breath He seems to say all this:

“Friends, look. In his own house within this lake pressed against the shining Yamuna lives a huge, dull serpent named Kaliya. He knows the art of holding water still. Through that skill he made space within the water, built a home in this lake, and began living there. His breath is so polluted, and such tremendous poisonous flames emerge from it, that all the surrounding land has been scorched and burned. See with your own eyes how the birds flying high above have fallen into the lake. Alas, fear of the serpent made their lives fly away and abandon them as though life itself had turned against them. All the poor birds have died, and their lives will not return as yours did.

“But brothers, see how this one kadamba remains unchanged. Even in contact with the serpent's fire of deadly poison, it supports itself and shines splendidly, adorned with beautiful leaves. Shall I tell you why? When Garuda was carrying nectar, drops fell upon this tree. It seems clear to Me that pure nectar remains protected even today in a hollow at the top. I wish to climb this kadamba boldly and see whether nectar is truly there. You should move a little distance away and continue grazing the cows.” (Sri Gopala-campu)

After speaking, Krsna looks at His friends. Every child feels, “My Kannu, dearer than millions of lives, looks only into my eyes and asks only my permission.” Hundreds of thousands of streams of affection seem to flow together from the dark beauty's eyes as He seeks their consent. Yet for some unknown reason the boys' hearts overflow. Their incomparable joy of a moment before suddenly becomes utterly quiet. They try to speak, but their eyes fill with tears.

English translation

Was this because Vrajendra's son told them to move away and graze the cows? No, that had happened many times. Today, without any visible cause, the dam of their hearts seemed ready to break. The dark beauty, however, is now in great haste. It is impossible to say whether the boys silently consent or object, for suddenly Vrajendra's son stops looking at them and turns toward the kadamba. His white teeth illuminate His tender lips, an extraordinary enchanting laugh rings everywhere, and His mysterious, reassuring words resound: “Brothers, do not fear. Do not grieve for Me. Do not go far. Remain right here and watch over the cows.”

“Speaking, ‘Do not fear, do not fear. Remain here and tend the cows,’ His charming lips shone with the radiance of His smiling white teeth.” (Sri Ananda-vrndavana-campu)

The boys watch without blinking as Krsna runs to the kadamba. Very quickly He gathers and firmly ties His waist cloth and swiftly arranges His scattered curls:

He wrapped His waist cloth with the belt of bells and gathered His curling locks into His crown.

Striking His left arm with His right palm, He begins climbing the kadamba. No, see, He is already seated upon its highest branch. What incomparable enthusiasm and beauty He displays:

In an instant He climbed the kadamba and at that moment His beauty increased beyond measure.

The Lord bound His play-cloth and tightened it well. Hari, placing His excellent hand upon the tree, climbed the kadamba. Striking His mighty arms, the ornament of play, His heart swelled with intense enthusiasm.

It seemed that Krsna remembered His descents as Matsya, Kurma, and other forms, the subduing of wicked beings in those forms, and His own disposition to restrain evil. Filled with those moods, He looked down at Kaliya Lake, or rather directly at Kaliya. In a thousandth part of half a moment His gaze assessed the force and prowess of the serpent's dreadful poison and returned. With eyes half closed, Krsna looked toward the distant, murmuring current of the daughter of Kalinda. He saw clearly that Kaliya had poisoned not only the shore but a vast portion of that lovely current.

Why should Vrajendra's son, the infinite ocean of compassion, delay? The kadamba's lofty branch shook violently, and the dark beauty leaped directly into the poisonous lake:

“Seeing the fierce force of the serpent's poison and the river polluted by him, Krsna, the divine descent who restrains the wicked, climbed a very high kadamba, tightened His belt, slapped His arms, and plunged into the poisonous water.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.16.6)

Into the water whose mere touch burned living beings, the prince leaped.
