The murmuring Mandakini filled that lovely grove on Kailasa with sound. Rows of flowering trees and vines swayed at the touch of the gentle breeze, and masses of blossoming lotuses perfumed the entire woodland. This enchanting scene upon the mountain stirred ever-new rasa in the Devarshi's heart, which was steeped in devotional rasa. At every moment it brought fresh delight to the melodic waves flowing from his Devadatta vina, adorned with the divine reality of sound, and to the praise of Hari issuing from his sacred mouth. Yet the same beauty kindled ever-new desires for enjoyment in the sense-corrupted minds of Kubera's sons Nalakuvara and Manigriva and filled their wild propensity for pleasure with still more demonic feeling. According to the vessel receiving it, the same thing became both nectar and poison at the same time.

The Devarshi advanced toward the hermitage of Nara-Narayana, drinking the nectar of Hari's fame and flooding the grove with that nectarean rasa. Meanwhile the two yaksha brothers had gathered a company of celestial courtesans, drunk Varuni liquor, and roamed without restraint, defiling this supremely sacred forest of Bhagavan Shankara's austerities. The apsaras were unclothed and the two brothers were naked. Entering the holy Mandakini, they became absorbed in intoxicated water play and virtually forgot themselves. By providence, the Devarshi passed directly through that place. The apsaras saw him, became startled, and emerged from the water in shame and fear of a curse. Reaching the bank, they all dressed as quickly as possible:

Upon the silver mountain where the celestial river flowed between its heights, trees stood near the bank and vines bore flowers. From lotuses in the stainless water, nectar fell as they bent low. Bees drank the honey and royal swans called sweetly. There the sons of Kubera sported with young women, overwhelmed by the pride of passion, intoxicated, and without clothes. Seeing the sage, the shameless two brothers continued indulging their vice, while all the women grew embarrassed and afraid and covered their bodies with garments.

But what of Kubera's two sons? Alas, even after becoming aware of the Devarshi's arrival, they possessed no true awareness. Remaining naked and intoxicated, they raised their arms and shouted for the apsaras to return to the water at once. An inconceivable power turned the Devarshi's gaze toward them. The instant he saw them, his heart became moist with compassion. "Oh, these are Kubera's sons, yet behold their condition and their terrible fall." The Devarshi immediately arranged to purify them and at the same time bring their beginningless current of worldly existence to an end. Concealing his supreme grace beneath a covering of anger and giving it the form of a curse, he called out, "Go, sons of Kubera! Take birth in a form suited to this insensibility of yours. Be born as trees. Yet even as trees your memory will not be destroyed. By my grace you will continuously remember this past life. You will forever burn in the fire of remorse, and after one hundred years by the gods' reckoning you will obtain the supreme fortune of Shri Krishna's lotus feet touching you. Through that sacred touch you will again attain divine status and return to celestial bodies. You will also receive the most rarely attained devotion to Hari. You will return only after becoming supremely fulfilled forever."

Having said this, the Devarshi departed, and Nalakuvara and Manigriva were born as the twin arjuna trees. When their years of waiting were complete, the supreme abode of Goloka's enjoyer, Bhagavan Purushottama Govinda Shri Krishnachandra himself, descended into that forest region where Nanda's courtyard appeared. Standing to one side of that courtyard, they repeatedly shook their branches and leaves and urgently called Shri Krishnachandra.

All these past events became present before Shri Krishnachandra as he remained bound to the mortar. Even saying that they became present is merely a manner of speaking, for to him they are eternally present. Following the taste of the enjoyer of childhood lila and acting by his own command so that he may drink rasa without interruption, the power of lila alone keeps a curtain of past and future drawn over those events as appropriate. When the proper occasion arrives, she removes it, touches Shri Krishnachandra's feet to awaken him, and he again sees everything. Today too he saw it all in this way and thought:

Meanwhile the cowherd children's condition was extraordinary. They were deeply anxious to free their beloved friend from Mother's bond. Through many childish gestures they showed Shri Krishnachandra friendship and sympathy, consulting together and devising a plan. They feared Mother might come, so all were exceedingly careful. Again and again one went to the other courtyard to see what Maiya was doing. One child quietly approached Shri Krishnachandra and touched with his hand the tender dark limbs bound to the mortar, then immediately stepped back and looked around in fear of Mother. An idea came to him. Bringing his mouth close to Nanda's son's ear, he said, "Brother, untie it yourself." He then told the other children his plan. All gladly approved, some by signs and some openly, and softly said, "Yes, just untie yourself and run away with us."

Shri Krishnachandra, abode of infinite majesty, again flowed into this current of rasa. The power of majesty, which had just come to report the pitiable condition of Nalakuvara and Manigriva, was swept no one knew where by the stream of honey flowing from the children's gentle voices: "Untie it, Kanhaiya! Untie it and run away." Vrajendra's son again became immersed in that sweetness. Accepting his friends' advice, he became delighted and tried to open his bond. But there was no possibility of his succeeding. Far from untying it, his hands could not even reach the knot. Mother had taken precautions. She left very little space between Shri Krishnachandra's waist and the mortar, then tied the knot on the far side of the mortar where Nilamani's hands could not reach. Thus the plan failed. Shri Krishnachandra can free every being in the universe from worldly bondage by mere resolve, yet today he lacked the power to open the bond Queen Yashoda had given him or even touch its knot. Unsuccessful, disappointed, and helpless, he looked toward his friends.

"Wait, your hands cannot reach it. I shall untie it." Saying this, one cowherd child tried to open the bond. Seeing him take too long, another went to help. When both failed, a third tried. In this way several children attempted the knot in succession, but far from opening, it did not even move. The children did not know that when the queen of Vraja tied it, she filled it with all the tenderness of the infinite maternal love stored in her deepest heart. No matter how powerful the current of friendly rasa flowing from the children's hearts might be, it could not wash away that tenderness of maternal love. The current of friendship lacks the power to absorb maternal tenderness into itself. Thus Mother's knot remained unmoved. Growing dejected, the circle of children looked at the moon of Vrajendra's son's face.

Seeing her opportunity, Shri Krishnachandra's omniscient power again composed herself and came to serve by reminding him of the arjuna trees. But seeing her Lord's expression and the children's incomparable loving efforts, she did not dare to act openly. To break Shri Krishnachandra's honey-filled childhood absorption and mix the grit of majesty again into his supremely sweet drinking of maternal nectar as he longed for freedom from Mother's bond would not be service but offense. Remaining hidden within the covering of Shri Krishnachandra's childlike innocence and behind the hem of the power of lila, omniscience therefore began her service. The twin arjuna trees again appeared before his eyes, and he thought, "The means of my liberation is simple." Delight filled his heart, and he quickly told the children, "Brothers, my hands cannot reach and none of you can untie the knot. Now there is a very fine plan. This mortar is heavy, and I cannot pull it alone. I shall pull while all of you push and roll it from behind. We shall go there toward those trees. You see them, do you not? There is enough space between them for me to pass through. I shall go between them, but the mortar cannot. I shall also turn it sideways so it will certainly become stuck on this side. Then from the far side I shall jerk the rope. The moment I pull with all my strength, the rope will break. That will finish it." The children could find no limit to their joy upon hearing the plan.

The idea turned into action. Shri Krishnachandra placed both knees and hands upon the earth. The children tightened their waistbands, and the stronger among them caught the mortar and tried to push it. Shri Krishnachandra, enjoyer of childhood lila, exerted all his strength to pull it toward himself. Clear signs of effort appeared upon his crimson lips and smooth, reddish cheeks. The mortar slowly began to slide. About eighteen months earlier, in this same courtyard, Shri Krishnachandra had begun his crawling lila and played upon his knees. The beauty of his sacred limbs that day had been much the same:

His lotus feet were crimson like bandhuka flowers and bore the goad and other principal marks. The music of his anklets seemed like young swans nesting there and embracing his feet with their wings. A fine belt of bells adorned his waist, a necklace his neck, and lovely ornaments his arms. Shrivatsa graced his chest, his charming nails shone, and many jewels gleamed amid gold. His lovely chin, teeth, lips, nose, ears, and cheeks deeply enchanted the mind. His brows were beautiful, and his eyes filled with compassionate rasa appeared like a pair of water-born lotuses. His forehead was broad, a lovely pendant rested there, and the curls of childhood shone as though Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars led hosts of darkness to meet the moon. An unprecedented comparison appeared when Mother covered him in yellow cloth: seeing stars upon a dark cloud, lightning seemed to abandon its nature and hide. Hosts of Cupids seemed to gather at every limb and spread masses of beauty. Surdas asks how anyone can describe the beauty before which the Vedas sing, "not this, not this."

Today there was only this difference: a mortar was tied at his waist, and bound to it Shri Krishnachandra slowly advanced toward the arjuna trees. That day he had not known how to speak clearly. Today, in a clear voice mixed with honey, he repeatedly paused and softly warned the children not to say anything loudly from curiosity. If the sound reached Mother's ears, she would run there and all their effort would be wasted. Crawling in this way, he gradually reached the arjuna trees. Who can describe the condition of those twin trees upon seeing him approach? Trees certainly possess sensitivity. Pain from a cruel deed performed near them touches and distresses them, while the vibration of a joyful event nearby makes them experience happiness. This is true of ordinary trees, so what need be said of these arjuna trees? They were Kubera's sons fallen by a curse, and even in their transformed condition every memory from their former divine life until now remained intact. After waiting one hundred divine years, they saw the moment of deliverance arrive and Bhagavan Mukunda Shri Krishnachandra, tender toward his devotees, come so close, himself bound to a mortar yet eager to free their bondage. Only they, or the indwelling Lord, knew how many feelings arose together in their hearts. Outwardly one could only see and say that when Shri Krishnachandra reached their roots, the trees trembled once, and their trunks, branches, and leaves all began to move.

The twin arjuna trees, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, could not know that Mukunda, who grants liberation to beings in worldly bondage merely when they form any relationship with him, had come to take refuge in them with the intention of freeing himself from the mortar-bond Mother had given him, intoxicated as he was with the rasa of childhood lila. Such knowledge was impossible for them. Only those who, through inconceivable fortune, receive a particle of grace from Vrajendra's son Shri Krishnachandra or one of his associates and forget his infinite majesty can know it. Within the growing current of pure loving rasa in their hearts, Shri Krishnachandra's infinite majesty dissolves forever. Flowing always in that stream of rasa, they maintain only a loving intimate relationship with him and eternally experience him as friend, son, or beloved of their lives. They alone can conceive, feel, and experience that Bhagavan Shri Krishnachandra, who holds infinite universes within himself, has today become Damodara and approached the arjuna trees to gain release from the mortar. No one else can know this. Thus the twin trees did not imagine it. Like everyone else, they understood only that to make the words of his supreme devotee Devarshi Narada true, to deliver them, and to fulfill them completely, he had slowly drawn the mortar near them:

English translation
Seeing and knowing this, the trees danced by making their branches and leaves tremble. There was no time for delay. Queen Yashoda might come at any moment. The cowherd children gazed curiously toward the sky-touching trees. Meanwhile Shri Krishnachandra passed through the space between the pair and reached the other side. The moment he entered the gap, the mortar turned sideways by itself:

Filled with excitement, the children softly exclaimed, "Wonderful! Wonderful! That is it, brother Kanhaiya! The mortar is stuck. Now pull it. Give it just one jerk." A gentle smile spread across child Gopala Shri Krishnachandra's bimba-like lips. Damodara pulled the mortar tied to his waist slightly toward himself. Not even a moment passed before the arjuna trees' roots tore from the earth. Their immense trunks, countless branches, and dense masses of leaves shook as though a mighty tempest were carrying them away. Even Damodara's childlike display of strength was utterly unbearable to them, and every particle trembled. Before their eyes, both trees fell violently to the earth with a tremendous crash:

They fell in such a way and at such a place that there was not a single cowherd child, cow, calf, or part of a building there, only a level floor inlaid with jewels. Thus no one suffered even the slightest injury, and no part of Nanda's palace was damaged. Yet this is not astonishing. They were not merely insentient trees but Kubera's sons, and from the moment Shri Krishna's lotus feet touched them they became his own people. All devotional virtues developed within them and immeasurable power arose. It was impossible for any action of theirs to cause anyone the slightest distress. Therefore, as they fell and exhausted the final destiny born from the curse, they contracted their branches suitably according to the available space. What is astonishing in such conduct by Nalakuvara and Manigriva, purified by Vrajendra's son's touch?

The wonder, the great wonder, is that these enormous twin arjuna trees, hard as thunderbolts, were uprooted and shattered by the force with which the mortar was pulled, yet the insistent bond created by Mother Yashoda and inspired by her maternal love did not open. Her rope fastened to the mortar and its knot did not break. Shri Krishnachandra's bond remained unbroken:
