The moon stood in the Āśleṣā constellation, the hour of poison had arrived, and the conjunction of death had also come about. Just then night, which increases the strength of demons, descended. The night-roaming Pūtanā felt as though power had entered her arms to break off hundreds of thousands of mountain peaks, gather them together, and fly away carrying them all. Under this surge of power she took flight and reached Vrajapura's pleasure grove, beautiful with trees and creepers.

English translation
The demoness opened her eyes wide and looked upon the city of Vraja's lord, upon its white dwellings glittering in the bright, pure light of countless jeweled lamps. She was greatly astonished that Nanda's Vraja had escaped her dreadful gaze for seven whole days. Until now she had wandered through cities, villages, and cowherd settlements, making infants drink from her poisoned breast and taking the lives of thousands. While playing this game of stealing lives, she had reached the very edge of this grove many times each day. Why, then, had her attention never once been drawn toward Nanda's Vraja? She had even heard that shortly before the eight-armed Goddess who moved through the sky warned Kaṁsa, King Nanda of Vraja had been blessed that same night with an extraordinarily beautiful son. More than this, Kaṁsa had specifically ordered her to take that son's life. Why had she continuously forgotten these matters for seven days? Not once had they entered her memory. Why had this happened? The demoness tried hard to reason it out, but every attempt was fruitless and vain. She could not discover the cause, nor could she have done so, for these events had occurred through the influence of the inconceivable great līlā-power of the Supreme Lord, the human-formed Absolute, the Supreme Person who sports in Goloka and now bore an infant's form. How could a demoness's vision truly discern the plan of the supremely majestic Lord and His līlā-power? She had certainly killed innumerable children, but which children? Only those who were cruel demons beneath human coverings and who had been born into demonic families allied with Kaṁsa in order to increase the demonic race and add to the earth's burden. She had not been able to touch even one infant born in a family sheltered by the Lord to continue a lineage of devotees. Directed by the līlā-power, she had merely lightened the earth's burden, like removing a thorn with another thorn. Yet she could not know this mystery. Nor could Pūtanā yet understand that only under the direction of this same līlā-power had she become able that day to touch and enter the conscious, spiritual land of Nanda's Gokula. Otherwise, the rule is that demons and demonic power can enter only where people do not hear and chant the supremely auspicious names and qualities of Śrī Hari, guardian of His devotees, whose names remove every obstacle. Not even a demonic shadow can fall upon a land filled with Hari's names and virtues. Such is the glory of His names and qualities. Here in Nanda's Gokula He Himself had arrived, and every atom of Gokula had assumed His nature. How, then, could the demoness Pūtanā enter such a Gokula?

But there was no time to delay. Nanda's palace seemed to draw Pūtanā toward itself, and the demoness grew eager to take Nanda's son's life. She looked toward Vrajapura's outer gate and saw many immensely powerful cowherds serving as guards, bows strung and arrows in hand. They were exceedingly vigilant, and a wondrous radiance shone upon their faces. The demoness had never before seen such extraordinary human splendor. For the first time in her life she was stunned, as though someone had stripped the strength from her immense and terrible limbs in a single instant. She began to think: "It is impossible for me to enter Vraja safely in this dreadful body by passing among these guards. The moment I enter their sight, their sharp arrows will certainly bring me to the ground." Nor could she travel through the sky. She had come this far, but proceeding farther by that route had become terrifying because a new and astonishing thing was happening. Although she remained in the sky, the dreadful outline of her body was reflected with perfect clarity upon Vrajapura's pure ground. Guided by that shadow, the guards' mantra-consecrated arrows would inevitably pierce her. Finding no way through this dilemma, the enchantress remembered the mistress of illusion. The instant she did so, her aim was fulfilled, for the mistress of illusion is a veiling power of Yogamāyā, the inconceivable great līlā-power of the son of Vraja's lord. Indirectly, the demoness had invoked the līlā-power herself.

The enchantress's magic awakened. In the very next instant her dreadful limbs became the form of an extraordinarily lovely sixteen-year-old woman, and a stream of beauty began to pour from her body. Adorned with this captivating form, she reached the city's outer gate. The cowherd guards remained motionless and silent, staring as though they were figures in a painting, while she set out for Nanda's house. Entering a realm of imagination, the guards began to wonder:

The cowherd women also saw Pūtanā as she went toward Nanda's house. Jasmine blossoms were woven into her lovely, swaying braid. Because of the weight of her broad hips and breasts, her waist appeared slender. Fine garments covered all her limbs. The glow of her swinging earrings made her hair shine, and that mass of gleaming locks adorned her face. A charming, gentle smile rested upon her lips. With smiling, sidelong glances she seemed to steal the minds of Vraja's residents, and she walked slowly while twirling a lotus in one hand. The gopīs thought that Śrī, the presiding goddess of prosperity, had come in person seeking shelter. Knowing the son of Vraja's lord to be the supreme shelter, husband, and protector, she had come to see and choose Him:

English translation
The night-roaming demoness began to advance toward Yaśodā's son. He lay in the cradle with His eyes closed. His eyes had shut the very moment the demoness set foot inside Nanda's house. Why did He close them? Watching from the sky this līlā of the Absolute, which enchants the minds of the greatest yogīs and sages, sensitive devotees inclined toward divine majesty enter the realm of sacred imagination and offer several possibilities. Perhaps Śrī Hari, performing His childhood pastimes, simply imitated an infant's natural gesture. Or He did not wish to look upon the face of such a wicked being, and so closed His lotus eyes. Another reason may be that the son of Vraja's lord, the abode of endless transcendental virtues, felt profound shame. He hesitated: "Ah, I shall have to take her life." The līlā-power said, "Master, the time has come. Change her body." The power of omniscience said, "Lord, why hesitate? You are removing her hideous covering and giving her an inconceivably beautiful, transcendental, conscious form as a mother. You are granting her limitless good." Yet insolence is utterly absent from the son of Vraja's lord. How could He take pleasure in so harsh an act as killing, even for another's supreme welfare? He seemed to think, "Deliver her, yes, but only by killing her!" Out of this sorrow, the dark pupils of Śyāmasundara appeared to hide behind His eyelids.
Or perhaps the wanderer of Goloka had resolved, "I shall make her My mother. She has come as a taker of life, but because she has approached Me, I shall make her a giver of life. Yet alas, she will suffer terribly while her body is changed. Shall I watch with My own eyes her helpless state as she writhes in the agony of death? No, I shall never watch it." This tender feeling may itself have closed His eyes. It is also possible that He shut them only to fulfill Pūtanā's desire. She had come wishing to nurse Him, concealing her hideous limbs by magic beneath such a beautiful body. Had Yaśodā's son's eyes remained open, the enchantress's illusion would have been destroyed at once, and Nanda's queen would immediately have seen her monstrous form. She would have clasped the treasure of her heart to her breast and fainted. A battle would have broken out between the bow-bearing cowherds and the demoness, the whole arrangement would have changed, and Pūtanā's desire to nurse Him would have remained unfulfilled. Therefore He covered His eyes.
Or there may have been an altogether different reason. It appeared that the Lord withdrew His gaze from Pūtanā and turned inward. The omniscient Master perceived the distress of the infinite worlds dwelling within His belly. The Friend of the lowly saw that all the beings within Him were troubled at that moment. They thought, "This demoness has come on the pretext of nursing Him to make Him drink the terrible kālakūṭa poison. She stands before Him with this foul and hidden purpose. If the Lord drinks the poison and takes it into His stomach, what will become of us when we come into contact with that unbearable venom? We shall all be destroyed." They were deeply anguished by this thought. Therefore the Lord of all and great sovereign of every world seemed to close His eyes and turn His gaze inward only to enter that inner realm, grant those distressed beings fearlessness, and proclaim, "Do not fear. Be unafraid of the poison. I shall drink it, yet its burning power will not so much as touch you."

Whatever the reason, the beauty of the son of Vraja's lord's closed, collyrium-lined eyes was a sight to behold. They were like two honey-intoxicated bees resting upon the folded foremost petals of two blue-lotus buds.

Before the eyes of the queen of Vraja, Rohiṇī, and the other gopīs, the demoness lifted Yaśodā's son into her lap. Displaying gestures filled with tender maternal affection, she moved aside her bodice and placed upon His red lips the tip of her breast steeped in deadly poison. The infant Yaśodā's son began drinking the milk with little sucking sounds. But He drank not only the milk. Along with it He began drinking the demoness's impure life itself. Within only a few moments, terrible pain seized every vital point in Pūtanā's body. Crying, "Release me! Oh, release me, release me!" she tried to pull the child from her breast and hurl Him far away, but He had gripped her breast very firmly with His hands. The demoness exerted all her strength, yet His hands would not come free. Meanwhile the channel of her life was being emptied of life. In mortal agony she began thrashing her arms and legs and repeatedly uttering dreadful screams, but Yaśodā's son did not stop drinking. He drank with such eagerness that it seemed not milk but a stream of nectar. In truth, it was no longer a stream of poisoned milk. By contact with His ruddy lips, like bandhūka flower buds, it had become a stream of nectar. Just as the sacred current of the celestial Gaṅgā draws in the stream of the merit-destroying Karmanāśā, absorbs it into itself, gives it its own nature, and makes even that impure current supremely pure, in just the same way the stream of poison issuing from Pūtanā's breast became wholly pure and filled with nectar.

With Yaśodā's son hanging upon her breast, Pūtanā rushes into the courtyard at the speed of lightning. Every limb is drenched in sweat and her eyes have rolled back. In this state the enchantress begins to fly upward as though someone had lifted her by hand and hurled her into the high sky. Unbearable pain robs her of awareness and makes her forget her magic. Her captivating beauty vanishes, and in its place appears the immense, terrifying body of an owlish demoness. Roaring fearfully, she flies toward Mathurā. Ah! The moment the rākṣasī rises with Nanda's son upon her heart, the life-breaths of Rohiṇī and the mistress of Nanda's house seem to fly from their rent heart-lotuses even faster than she.

When mortal pain makes Pūtanā shriek terribly, the earth trembles with its countless mountains, the heavens quiver with the circling planets, the seven nether regions and all directions resound, and many creatures fall to the ground in fear of a thunderbolt. Such is her roar, pervading every quarter and its farthest reaches. Even as she flies, the sound is as though the sky above Vraja township has been seized by an exceedingly violent tempest. Within moments Pūtanā passes beyond the cowherds' palaces and crosses the pleasure grove. Ahead lies King Kaṁsa's extraordinarily beautiful garden extending for six kos, where countless mango, jackfruit, and other trees raise their heads proudly in their beauty. Until now the demoness had flown very high, but the moment she reaches the sky above this garden her immense body descends. No, the inconceivable līlā-power of Vraja's prince pushes her downward. Until now that power held her aloft; now it casts her down. She flies on, brushing the trees. Her body is enormous, her immense wings beat noisily as she flies, and the anguish of approaching death makes her speed still more violent. The blows of her wings uproot all the trees of the lovely garden and break them apart. It takes the demoness only moments to cross its six-kos breadth, but in that short time the strokes of her wings pulverize every tree in Kaṁsa's garden. The vast garden is suddenly left without a single tree.

English translation
The demoness could not destroy even one leaf of a single vine in Vraja, yet through her Kaṁsa's vast garden was ruined. This happened because the garden belonged to the asura Kaṁsa and its trees too were imbued with an asuric disposition. There is nothing astonishing in this. Trees, their branches, flowers, and fruits fall into two classes. Beneath some trees stand the hermitages of sages and the huts of saints, and on their raised earthen borders devotees intoxicated with sacred feeling sit and relish singing the Lord's virtues. Beneath others stand pleasure halls for sensualists and resting places for sinners blinded by the arrogance of wealth, while libertines sit upon their platforms and drink intoxicants. From one kind of branch hangs a swing for the Lord's sacred image. When dry, it becomes a door or seat in His temple, or burns in the devotional kitchen to prepare His offering. Another kind bears the swings of courtesans, becomes the bed of a prostitute when dry, or burns to cook meat in an outcaste's house. Some flowers and fruits serve the Lord's worship; others satisfy a sensualist's organs. The trees in Kaṁsa's garden belonged to the second class. No saint had ever rested in their shade; only Kaṁsa's servants slept beneath them. Their branches had never served any pure act, and only demons allied with Kaṁsa used their dry wood. Not one fruit or flower from the garden had ever been offered in the Lord's service. Its flowers became garlands only for Kaṁsa or were woven into his wives' braids, and its fruits adorned that demon's dark-natured meals. Though always laden with flowers and fruit, those trees were thus truly flowerless and fruitless. Their end was best, for they served an asura. The inconceivable great līlā-power of Vraja's prince thought that no finer opportunity for their welfare would come: her Lord, Nanda's son Himself, sat upon the breast of Pūtanā who would destroy them. Through her, the trees would touch Him and gain fulfilment. Moreover, much wood would be needed to cremate the demoness. How could the people of Vraja quickly obtain enough for so vast a body? Let the wood be prepared beforehand, accomplishing two purposes at once. With this resolve, the līlā-power hurled Pūtanā's body upon the garden. As the demoness hovered on the verge of falling, she shattered and felled all the trees spread across six kos. Be that as it may,

Now her strength is spent, and at the same moment she reaches the far boundary of Kaṁsa's garden. Pūtanā's lifeless body falls upon a treeless, level tract amid a deserted forest. This land belongs to the lord of Vraja. Every morning all Vraja's cows gather there and the cowherds milk them, but at every other time no one remains and no activity occurs. Outside the morning hours no one even visits. Only waves of cool, gentle, fragrant wind repeatedly dance in from the forest and, finding no one there, pass with a soft sigh into another wood. This alone is a suitable place to receive Pūtanā's colossal corpse, and the līlā-power arranged it beforehand. Had the demoness fallen anywhere within Vraja township, she would have caused boundless harm. Her body is so frightful and her form so hideous that life seems to dry up at its sight, yet Yaśodā's son remains entirely fearless, gazing with innocent eyes and playing upon her breast.

The moment the demoness's body falls from the sky, the cowherd women reach the place, as though they too had flown beside her. Indeed, they have nearly flown there. Seeing Pūtanā rise, the gopīs ran below while she flew above. Their eyes remained fixed upon the son of Vraja's king hanging from the demoness's breast, yet their feet, possessed by some inconceivable power, crossed the pillars, walls, roofs, and finials of jewel-made palaces and passed over the branches and vines of the pleasure groves. They advanced unobstructed as though those temples and trees did not exist and the way were one vast level tract. It must be so, for this is the rule: every obstacle in the path of those whose eyes are centred upon Vraja's prince dissolves. Be that as it may.

The cowherd women see the true form of her whom they had taken for the goddess of prosperity and whose beauty had just put Indrāṇī and Varuṇānī to shame. Her shape is like an immense owl; her mouth bears fierce, plough-like fangs; her nostrils resemble mountain caves; her breasts are like two great slabs of rock; her eyes are deep, dark wells; her hips look like the dreadful banks of a river; her arms, thighs, and legs resemble bridges across a stream; and her belly looks like a waterless lake. Yet blessed is the fortune of Nanda's queen and of Nanda: their dark darling has escaped her clutches wholly uninjured and alive. The cowherd women immediately lift Yaśodā's son and press Him to their breasts. Within moments they carry Him to where Nanda's queen and Rohiṇī lie unconscious. The mothers' swoon breaks only when they feel the touch of Nanda's son. Bathing her child in a pouring stream of tears and kissing His head, cheeks, and lips, Nanda's queen again swoons in an ecstasy of love. In this swoon, however, every hair upon her body repeatedly thrills with joy.

Nanda's son has remained so long upon the night-wanderer's breast that all the cowherd women immediately arrange rites of protection, fearing that her impure touch may have harmed Him. A tawny cow is brought. Upananda's wife grasps its tail and circles it three times around Yaśodā's son's limbs, then touches Him with the cow's body. Next she waves black mustard seeds over His dark form and casts them into the fire. A gopī runs for a winnowing basket, gently touches His head and belly with one corner, and sets it aside. Upananda himself arrives with cow urine, in which Yaśodā's son is immediately bathed. Fine dust from the cows is applied to His moistened body. The women of Vraja then protect His twelve parts by marking them with cow dung while reciting the twelve divine names Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, Mādhava, Govinda, Viṣṇu, Madhusūdana, Trivikrama, Vāmana, Śrīdhara, Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha, and Dāmodara over His forehead, belly, chest, throat, right side, right arm, right shoulder, left side, left arm, left shoulder, back, and waist respectively. The gopīs next sip water for purification, perform placement upon their own limbs and hands with the eleven seed-mantras beginning with Aja, and then place those seeds upon Yaśodā's son's limbs. Silently reciting phrases such as, "Aṁ, obeisance to Aja, may He protect Your feet," and, "Maṁ, obeisance to Maṇimān, may He protect Your knees," the beautiful cowherd women touch and protect each of Nanda's son's limbs. They do not know that endlessly many universes are themselves protected within every pore of the limbs they seek to protect. Nor will they ever know, because that knowledge has lain submerged from beginningless time in the unfathomable depths of their spiritual ocean of the nectar of parental rasa, and there it will remain for all eternity. Having protected His outward limbs and duly completed the remaining rites, including the protection of the directions, the women of Vraja place the child in Mother Yaśodā's lap.

Holding her son against her breast, Vraja's queen says in a voice choked with feeling, "Sisters, the lord of Vraja was always detached. Whether he had a son or not, his disposition remained the same. I am his servant, and it is my duty to follow him in every respect; therefore I too had become detached. We had both resolved to complete life's journey without a child.

English translation
But the longing of all of you changed the course of our lives. Only because of your powerful insistence were the various rites performed, and only upon seeing the intense desire of all Vraja did the lord of Vraja consent to arrange sacrifices and other observances. By the grace of Nārāyaṇa, our chosen Lord, the lord of Vraja then began to receive visions of this child, and I too began to see Him. Beholding Him again and again, the lord of Vraja became enchanted and all his detachment began to disappear. Then he grew restless to obtain this child as his son. Moved by His devotee's yearning, Śrī Nārāyaṇa finally sent Him. But sisters, all this is the fruit of your longing. If you had not been here, how could I ever have seen Him? Indeed, I am not even worthy to be His mother. That is why He left me and went away. You brought Him back and filled my lap once more. But He truly belongs to you. I now offer Him at the feet of you all, for only you can protect Him."
Speaking thus, the queen of Vraja places her son at the feet of the beautiful women of Vraja and begins to sob.

Suddenly, at that very moment, the sky above Vraja becomes intensely radiant. The light is as great as though a thousand suns had risen together, yet it is so cool that the moonlight of a thousand moons is insignificant beside it. From wherever they stand, the people of Vraja begin to see and experience that Pūtanā has entered an exceedingly divine, spiritual, subtle body. A celestial chariot formed from the essence of jewels has arrived. It is surrounded by supremely divine and enchanting attendants of the Lord and is magnificently adorned with a hundred thousand white yak-tail fans and a hundred thousand inset mirrors. Curtains of beautiful, fine cloth that cannot be burned by fire hang within it. It bears many varied and lovely jewelled vessels, and its hundred beautiful gem-made wheels sparkle with the light of jewels. Pūtanā runs to mount this chariot. The Lord's attendants take her aboard and depart toward the realm of Goloka. The wonder of the cowherd men and women knows no limit.

English translation
In her previous birth Pūtanā was named Ratnamālā, the daughter of King Bali. When Lord Vāmana came to the sacrifice of Bali, king of the asuras, Ratnamālā saw Vāmana's beautiful dwarf form and her innermost heart filled with maternal affection. She wished, "If only I could hold this young brahmacārī to my breast like a son and nurse Him." Her desire was reflected in Vāmana's heart. No, it was engraved there forever. At once He silently said, "So be it." Ratnamālā could not hear Him, however, and within a few moments she even forgot her own wish. Moreover, when Vāmana took everything Bali possessed, Ratnamālā burned with anger and longed to take the young ascetic's life. But Bali forbade her. Unable to disobey her father, she became distressed and fell silent. Thus this resolve too remained unfulfilled. In the course of time Ratnamālā forgot the matter, but how could Vāmana forget? He had incurred a debt of maternal feeling from Ratnamālā and left His "So be it" with her as a pledge in return. The son of Vraja's king has now discharged that very debt of Vāmana. After so many years, when Ratnamālā became Pūtanā because the dispositions of the demonic lineage remained within her, the proper opportunity arose for its repayment. Since the son of Vraja's king had Himself come, He personally repaid it. Be that as it may.

English translation
Upananda orders Pūtanā's demonic body to be cut into pieces. The order is all that is needed. Young and old among the leatherworkers who live in Nanda's Vraja set to work, severing her limbs and forming them into many heaps of flesh. Far from the place where Pūtanā's body fell, many separate wooden funeral pyres are built, and the heaps of limbs are carried there and placed upon them. Hundreds of pyres burst into crackling flame at once. Masses of smoke rise into the sky from Pūtanā's burning body, so beautiful and fragrant that every particle seems filled with the scent of aloe-wood. The wind spreads this fragrance and flows toward Mathurā, as though going to address the lord of Vraja returning from that direction: "Sovereign of Vraja township, this is not truly the fragrance of aloe-wood. It is the wondrous fragrance of your son's fame. Pūtanā went to kill Him, but He made her His mother. While drinking her milk, He also drank away all the impurity of her body and filled it with this fragrance in return. Yet, lord of the cowherds, I too have committed an offence. I could not restrain my greed. In my desire to become the greatest donor of all, I gathered the fragrance of your little son's glory without your permission. Please allow me to carry it away. I shall conceal it in my mantle for all eternity. Joining the life-breaths of those who love your son, I shall distribute it through the world in the form of song."

What manner of conduct is this in the Lord?
For the sake of His holy renown, He passes over the pure and bestows His love upon the fallen.
Pūtanā came to kill Him, smearing deadly poison upon her breast,
yet the compassionate king of the Yadus granted her the destiny of a mother.
