Placing a water pot upon her head, the queen of Vraja set out for the bank of the Yamunā. The maidservants caught hold of her feet and all began pleading with her, but Nanda's queen listened to no one. Śrī Rohiṇī reached out with one hand to steady the pot and, tenderly touching Śrī Yaśodā's chin with the other, said, "Sister, please remain here. I will fetch the water." Yet today the lady of Vraja's lord set aside even Śrī Rohiṇī's words and would not accept her restraint. How could she? She was thinking, "True service is that which one performs oneself. This water will be used to serve our Brahmin guest, and the revered Brahmin will cook his meal with it. When he has eaten and is satisfied, I shall place my dark little child at his feet. Pleased with my service, he will give my darling an unfailing blessing, and my dark child will live long." Thus, after gently persuading everyone, she went to fetch the water with her own hands. Simple-hearted Mother Yaśodā had not the slightest suspicion that a devourer had appeared in the guise of a protector. He was not a Brahmin worshiped by the world, but Śrīdhara, a Brahmin in name only who was honored by Kaṁsa. Only his body was that of a Brahmin; all his deeds were those of a demon. Sent by Kaṁsa, he had come with the vile and fiendish design of taking the life of Yaśodā's son.

Śrī Rohiṇī had followed Yaśodā as far as the doorway. Looking at Nanda's queen's delicate feet, reddened with lac, she worried: yesterday had been the thirtieth day since the birth, and yesterday Nanda's queen had gone to worship the Yamunā for the second time. Even that small exertion had left her weary on the return journey. How, then, would she carry back a pot full of water today? At this thought Rohiṇī's compassionate heart gave a sudden throb. She felt she should follow behind her, but then both infants would be left alone in the house. There was also urgency in preparing the offering for Lord Śrī Nārāyaṇa, for attending to the Brahmin Śrīdhara had already caused considerable delay that day. Therefore Mother Rohiṇī returned to the courtyard. She cast her gaze toward the infant sleeping in the swing and then went into the kitchen to make sure that all the arrangements were in order.

As fate would have it, Vraja's lord too had gone to the cowherd settlement that day. After returning from Mathurā and hearing the entire account of the calamity caused by Pūtanā, the king of Vraja had completely stopped going to the pastures or anywhere far away. His heart had become deeply apprehensive. He would often reflect, "Brother Vasudeva's words proved true to the letter. He warned me there itself":

"You should not remain here for very long; disturbances are taking place in Gokula." For that reason, far from leaving Gokula, Vraja's lord would scarcely leave the palace. Again and again he entered the inner apartments and, seeing the infant safe and well, became immersed in joy. The object of his meditation during worship had changed the very moment he first saw the child's face, although his tongue continued to repeat the mantra of his chosen Lord. But when he returned from Mathurā, took upon his lap the son who had been preserved unharmed from Pūtanā's terrible clutches, and looked upon his face, it seemed that from that moment even the mantra had changed. Thereafter, while reciting his chosen mantra, Vraja's lord would forget himself and begin repeating this instead:

"If Śrī Nārāyaṇa has placed you in the hands of a poor wretch like me, then He Himself will arrange everything hereafter and sustain it all. He will surely protect you. He has tolerated my offenses until now and will continue to do so." The child's face remained constantly before the king of Vraja. Whenever the surge of emotion grew intense, he would run to his son crying, "He will provide, He will provide," clasp the child to his heart, and lose all awareness of himself. But when twenty-three days passed safely, no calamity befell Vrajapura, and no interruption disturbed the Vraja residents' daily festivals of exuberant joy, his fear of some harm befalling his son eased somewhat. Only for this reason could he venture to the pastures that day. After cautioning the queen of Vraja, he had set out for the cowherd settlement. In his absence this Brahmin with a demon's heart arrived. Brahmins came every day, and Vraja's lord served them so devotedly that they became choked with emotion while blessing him. Today, however, he was absent. Thus, the moment Śrīdhara arrived, the queen of Vraja personally devoted herself to serving him.

Prompted by the inconceivable great power that directs the līlā, the maidservants assumed that Mother Rohiṇī had gone to remain beside Yaśodā's son. Rohiṇī, seated in the kitchen, supposed, "The maidservants have gone to the child, and the revered Brahmin is already sitting there. What cause is there for concern?" In fact, only the son of Vraja's lord and the base-minded Śrīdhara, lying in wait, were there. Śrīdhara rejoiced inwardly: "What an excellent opportunity. Everyone has gone away of their own accord."

Śrīdhara raised his eyes and looked toward Yaśodā's son, yet even while looking he did not truly see him. The child was lying in a little cradle. Before leaving, Mother Yaśodā had loosened its cord until the cradle touched the ground, fearing that someone might swing her baby too vigorously in her absence. Nearby lay a winnowing basket, one corner of which had been placed against the cradle so that no evil glance might touch her son. How wondrous and astonishing that anxious measures should be taken to protect from the evil eye the son of Vraja's lord, the creator and master even of Time. Out of fear of Him the wind moves; the sun rises daily upon the eastern horizon, gives heat for four watches, and disappears into the western sky; Indra pours down rain; and countless stars continue to shine. Frightened of Him, innumerable trees, creepers, and plants flower, bear their load of fruit, and distribute sweet fruits to the world. Out of fear of Him the rivers flow and the ocean does not transgress its bounds. Fearing Him, fire burns, and the earth, bearing mountains upon her breast, does not sink beneath the waters. Obeying His rule, space gives living beings room to breathe, and the three gods remain intent upon creation, preservation, and dissolution. What could be more astonishing than the son of Vraja's lord, within whose belly infinite universes abide, lying beside the corner of a winnowing basket to be protected from the evil eye?

For this very reason Śrīdhara could not recognize the son of Vraja's lord. His impure intelligence had no power to understand such a wondrous and extraordinary riddle. Yet although Śrīdhara had no wish to learn, the son of Vraja's lord desired to teach him something.

Now a new problem arose before the son of Vraja's lord. Pūtanā had only disguised herself as a Brahmin woman, but Śrīdhara had actually been born in a Brahmin family. How could a Brahmin be killed? "The Brahmin is eternally worthy of My worship too. I have already proclaimed this." It was as though the power of līlā placed the following scene before the son of Vraja's lord. In Vaikuṇṭha is a forest named Naiḥśreyasa, lined with wish-fulfilling trees. Its trees are eternally adorned with all the beauty of the six seasons: spring, summer, rains, autumn, early winter, and late winter. The clear water of its lakes is encircled by flowering mādhavī creepers. Nectar drips from clusters of blossoms, while a gentle breeze moves through the forest carrying their honeyed fragrance in its silken garment. Rows of humming bees roam there. One bee's hum rises so high and yet remains so sweet that it seems to sing Hari's glories in a graceful, full voice. Hearing it, the clamor of pigeons, cuckoos, cranes, cakravākas, cātakas, swans, parrots, partridges, and peacocks falls silent for a time, as though the birds have lost themselves in the joy of the bee's kīrtana of Hari. Rows of tulasī beautify the forest everywhere. Although mandāra, kunda, kurabaka or tilaka, night-blooming lotuses, campaka, arṇa, punnāga, nāga, bakula or maulasirī, day-blooming lotuses, pārijāta, and all the other flowers possess intense fragrance, they humbly bow to tulasī without pride, for they know that the tulasī leaf is dearest to Śrī Hari. Who is an ascetic like Tulasī, whom Śrī Hari grants a place among the ornaments of His own divine body? The sky above Naiḥśreyasa forest is filled with innumerable aerial palaces made of vaidūrya, emerald, and gold. At the seventh enclosure, the seventh gateway, of this splendid forest dwell the eternally youthful sages Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanātana, and Sanatkumāra, radiant like fire. Near them stand the stunned Jaya and Vijaya. In My form as Nārāyaṇa, I am saying to those sons of Brahmā:

I am called Vikuṇṭha because immersion through hearing in My stainless, nectarean fame instantly purifies the whole world, down to the dog-eater. Yet it is from you that I have gained the glory of being a supreme holy place. Therefore I would cut off even My own arm if it acted against you.
Through service to the Brahmins, the dust of My lotus feet acquired the power instantly to destroy every impurity and I attained such a noble disposition that Lakṣmī does not abandon Me even when I show no attachment to her, though others observe vows merely to gain the slightest glance from her.
I do not relish the oblations of a sacrificer, drenched in flowing ghee and offered through the mouth of fire, as much as I relish each morsel from the mouth of a satisfied Brahmin who has dedicated the fruits of his actions to Me.
Though I possess the undivided opulence of Vaikuṇṭha's Yogamāyā, I bear upon My crowns the stainless dust of the Brahmins' feet. Who would not honor the Brahmins, when the water used to worship them instantly purifies even the worlds crowned by the moon?
The foremost twice-born, milk-giving cows, and helpless creatures are My very bodies. Those whose vision has been ruined by sin and who regard them as separate from Me will be torn apart in anger by the vulture-like messengers of Yama, furious like serpents and acting under My rod of punishment.
Those who see Me within Brahmins even when the Brahmins speak harshly to them, and who worship them with delighted hearts and lotus faces sprinkled by the nectar of smiles, soothing them with affectionate words as a son appeases his father, bring Me under their control. Just as I now address you, I too am won by them.

"O sages, people call Me Vikuṇṭha because immersion in the nectar of My stainless fame instantly purifies the entire world, down to the outcaste. But where did I obtain this holy renown? You Brahmins bestowed it upon Me. What wonder is there, then, that you are dear to Me? Indeed, if even My own arm acted against the Brahmin community, I would cut it off and cast it away. The dust of My feet has become so holy that, the moment it is touched, all sins of all beings, moving and unmoving, insentient and sentient, are destroyed forever. But where did that holiness come from? It too is the fruit of serving the Brahmin community. More than this, it is through serving you that I have acquired such a beautiful disposition that Lakṣmī, for the smallest merciful glance from whom the gods continually observe restraints and vows, does not forsake Me even though I remain indifferent to her.
"On one side, let abundant sacrificial materials be assembled and duly offered to Me in the fire. On the other, let Brahmins who have surrendered all the fruits of their actions to Me and become content be fed rice pudding steeped in ghee, many kinds of sweets, and other foods, becoming satisfied with every mouthful. Although in both cases it is I who receive through those mouths, the satisfaction I gain through the Brahmin's mouth is greater than what I gain through the mouth of fire. I am the master of the indivisible and limitless majesty of Yogamāyā. The Gaṅgā issuing from My feet continually sanctifies Lord Śaṅkara, whose crest is adorned by the moon, and all three worlds. Yet even though I am supremely pure and the Supreme Lord, I bear the sacred dust of the Brahmin's feet upon My crown. Who would not bow his head before every act of such a Brahmin?
"The best of the twice-born, milk-giving cows, and helpless beings are all three My bodies. Those whose discrimination has been ruined by sinful conduct and who see these as separate meet a terrible end and go to hell. Yama's messengers appear before them like vultures and, furious as serpents, tear their limbs apart. O sons of Brahmā, those who perceive Me even within harsh-speaking Brahmins, honor them with joyful hearts, smiling faces blossoming with nectar upon their lips, and soothe them with loving words of entreaty, just as a son appeases an offended father and as I now seek to appease you, bring Me under their control."

The problem confronting Yaśodā's son was resolved, but its resolution was meant to entangle Śrīdhara. The instant Śrīdhara lunged toward the cradle, the play of Yogamāyā, expert in making the impossible occur, began. He could not understand the mystery. The infant's body remained just as it had been and his hands appeared unchanged, yet Śrīdhara's hand came into the infant's grasp. In the next moment there was a mighty jerk, and Śrīdhara fell to the ground. He then felt as though the child had driven two thick nails through the soles of his feet and deep into the earth. He felt no pain from their being hammered in, yet his feet were so firmly stuck to the ground that they could not move in the slightest. Then he felt that the infant had seized his tongue and twisted it. At once all power of speech vanished. Śrīdhara looked fearfully toward the child. He saw the child rise and enter the nearby inner chamber, where many vessels filled with yogurt were safely stored. The child broke several of the vessels, brought back some yogurt, and smeared it upon Śrīdhara's face. To the Brahmin's utter amazement, not a single speck of yogurt clung to the child's fingers. After doing all this, the child lay down in the cradle just as before and began to cry in his sleep. At this sight Śrīdhara was completely bewildered and knew not what to do.

The crying of Yaśodā's son reached the kitchen. Mother Rohiṇī ran toward him, but before she arrived, Mother Yaśodā returned carrying the full water pot. Seeing the child weep, she lifted him into her lap. Holding him against her heart, the mother looked again and again at the broken vessels, the scattered yogurt, and the Brahmin's yogurt-smeared face. She wondered, "Why did the Brahmin commit this wicked act? No, no, this is no Brahmin. Such deeds could never be possible for a Brahmin. He must surely be some demon." Nevertheless, to dispel her doubt she questioned the Brahmin and repeatedly urged him to tell her the whole truth. But:

In moments, a crowd of cowherd women gathered in Nanda's courtyard. Meanwhile, Vraja's lord returned from the cowherd settlement. After learning the whole matter, he consulted Upananda. They decided that whoever the man might be, well-being lay in removing him from the house. Accordingly, the cowherd men carried the mute Śrīdhara beyond the boundary of Vrajapura and left him there.

Only moments earlier, divine majesty had manifested within the dark body of the son of Vraja's lord, a body no longer than the measure of one hand, in order to instruct Śrīdhara. Yet the people of Vraja did not catch even the faintest trace of it. How could the queen of Vraja have perceived it? Her heart, overflowing with maternal love, had no room for even the shadow of such majesty to enter. Within moments she forgot even this incident and became absorbed in fondling her son. At one moment she nursed him; at another she showered his face with dense, repeated kisses, adding ever-new color to the eternally increasing longing of the wanderer of Goloka, now in an infant's form, to relish the rasa of parental love. Sometimes she remained gazing at his face, framed by dense, dark, curling hair. At other times she smelled the wondrous and incomparable fragrance flowing from all his limbs and lost all awareness of herself. Every two ghaṭīs she changed the cloth covering his bed and the garment covering his body. During this activity the Lord of līlā would begin to cry a little. Yet even that crying was so sweet that it resembled the exquisitely sweet resonance of a newly fashioned vīṇā, and streams of nectar began pouring into Yaśodā's ears. As she watched, the day came to an end and evening arrived. As on every day, the queen of Vraja laid her son, satisfied by drinking her milk, in the cradle, gently rocked him, and began to sing a lullaby:

English translation
Yaśodā rocks Hari in the cradle.
She sways Him, fondles and caresses Him, and sings whatever comes to her.
"Come, O sleep, to my darling. Why do you not come and lull him?
Why do you not come quickly? Kanhā is calling you."
Sometimes Hari closes His eyes; sometimes His lips begin to quiver.
Thinking Him asleep, she falls silent, while He continues making little signs.
In the midst of this Hari grows restless and rises, and Yaśomatī sings sweetly.
The joy that, says Sūra, is rare even for gods and sages, the bride of Nanda attains.
