No one knew when or from whom Vrajesha's son learned to play the flute. One day that flood of nectar suddenly flowed, immersing all Vraja. Even after awareness returned, they could not decide what it was. Some cowherd women saw children joyfully clamoring around a thicket of yellow jhinti flowers, while hidden within, Yashoda's Nilamani placed a green bamboo flute upon his bimba-red lips and filled it with sound. They stood gazing like motionless dolls, but the wind touched the experience in their lives, grew twice as restless, and carried into every corner of every home the news that this was the enchanting flute of Queen Yashoda's Nilamani, Nanda's son Shri Krishnachandra.

The sound stirred Vrindavana, rose to possess the sky, and descended to shake the lower worlds. Clouds stopped; Tumburu peered toward Vrindavana with widened eyes, seeking the source of the maddening sound. Sanaka and Sanandana's long-practiced meditation broke, and they plunged into the sweetness. Brahma marveled, peaceful Bali grew restless, and Anantadeva began to whirl. Piercing the cosmic shell, the sound spread everywhere and an ocean of rasa surged:

Every resident reached the source. Seeing the crowd, Shri Krishnachandra grew shy, removed the flute, and began another game. The queen too arrived, her life touched by the sound and swept by longing. Shri Krishnachandra found a place to hide his embarrassment: he ran to Mother's neck and concealed his face in her garment. Her eyes filled with tears. From today a new practice entered the women's routine. Wherever they found him, they made one request: "Darling, play the flute a little." Especially when he adorned Father or Mother's lap, groups gathered and said:

Nandalala played the flute upon Shri Yamuna's bank. His lips and hands joined its seven notes to produce a nectarean melody. Hearing it, Vraja's young women ran, unable to control their limbs; locks fell across their faces and pearl necklaces broke. Water ceased flowing and wind ceased moving in Vrindavana. Unmoving beings awakened while moving beings lost awareness. Fruitless trees bore fruit and flowers, burned leaves turned green, and mountains melted as waters of love flowed from their peaks. Deer stopped grazing when the melody entered their ears and fell as though pierced by arrows. A lion embraced a cow and remained with ears extended. Frogs sat upon serpents' hoods, gazing at the beautiful face. Birds tasted the rasa and fell silent, closing their eyes like sages; fruit remained in their beaks as they sat with wings spread. Gods, humans, demons, and celestials were enchanted, their vehicles filling the sky. Chaturbhujadas asks who did not come under the power of that flute melody.

Within days Shri Krishnachandra revealed this maddening flute sound, as though making an auspicious beginning by placing upon his lips the eternal companion of future lilas. His restlessness increased in Vrindavana, though its field changed. He no longer stole dairy products from homes, but after breakfast went directly to forest or pasture. Balarama followed like a shadow, approving and encouraging him. Cows, calves, and bulls became their playmates until noon and evening, so anxious Vrajaraja joined the herding daily and the queen spent most time in the pasture. Still control was impossible. Krishna climbed great bulls' necks and backs, Balarama twisted their tails, and Krishna grasped their horns to make them rise. They gathered cows and calves, made them dance, and danced themselves. Harnessed bulls inevitably drew them to seize the horns and play. Parents warned them, but they did not listen. The moment attention turned elsewhere, they ran to older boys tending calves or young men grazing cows in the distant forest. Mother's heart pounded, and each evening she held them in her arms and instructed them until sleep, but Nilamani answered:

Mother's every hair filled with joy at his reply, yet she could not imagine sending such a little Nilamani to herd cows. She changed the subject and put him to sleep. Shri Krishnachandra had entered his third year, boyhood appearing clearly within infancy, and the festival of wearing garments had occurred. Mother dressed him in yellow cloth. He carefully wore it, then felt it a bond and threw it away. Desiring it again, he tried himself, leaving some parts covered and others exposed. Feeling shy, he tried harder. This charming lila occurred daily:

When he used that yellow cloth to bind together the horns of several enormous bulls and pull them, the terrified queen cried out and Vrajesha's heart trembled. Nilamani would not listen. Dau himself was the one who normally informed Mother, so if he joined in, what fear remained? Seeing no other protection, Vrajesha consulted the queen and decided:
