English translation
At once the poisonous water surged four hundred cubits in every direction above the lake. Kāliya's venom had already raised tall waves of many colors, some red and some yellow, and the lake churned violently on every side. Then Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra Himself, the Supreme Brahman, Puruṣottama, and Svayaṁ Bhagavān, plunged into it with tremendous force. What wonder was there if the water suddenly spread through a region four hundred cubits across and leapt so high from the force of His descent?
When the enjoyer of childhood play rests upon Mother Yaśodā's lap or climbs upon a friend's shoulders during their charming games, His great emerald-blue body is softer than the tenderest flower petals. Nīlasundara's divine form seems lighter than even a tiny tuft of cotton. Yet when those same dark, tender, smooth, and weightless limbs encounter demons and Vrajarāja's son's pastime of subduing them begins, the weight of countless universes and the hardness of millions of thunderbolts manifest within them, though their appearance remains unchanged. The power of Vrajarāja's son, treasury of infinite strength, always manifests as required, and His boundless majestic potency inevitably acts in the necessary measure.
As the playful Lord now introduced the pastime of subduing Kāliya, a fitting invocation had to occur. Thus the water leapt so far when He entered it. Nothing about this was new. If anything was astonishing, it was that the water spread only this far when the Lord who holds limitless universes within Himself plunged with such force. Even that judgment belonged only to outward vision. The explanation stood plainly before the eye: lines of countless cowherd boys stared wide-eyed toward Nīlasundara, their treasure dearer than millions of lives. They marked the water's boundary. The poisonous waves could not pass them or even touch them, but rolled upon the ground a few cubits before them, as if announcing Kāliya's coming distress. On the other side flowed the lovely current of Kalinda's daughter. Why should it remain poisoned over any greater region for even another moment?
The flood extending four hundred cubits also served a special purpose. Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra intended to gather the wandering wives of Kāliya by this means. Before awareness of His infinite majesty and complete divinity arose within their hearts, He desired to grant them pure rasa from His pastimes. The delight of Vrajarāja's son's innocent gestures, which conceal the supreme Lord of all lords, is unique. Only a few greatly fortunate souls receive even a glimpse of it by His grace and become fulfilled. Cruel-hearted Kāliya was entirely unqualified for this gift and lacked the fortune to taste the sweet childhood rasa of Gokulendra's son when His infinite majesty remained hidden. The serpent wives, however, held a long-cherished desire for such a vision, and the opportunity to fulfill it had arrived. Before churning Kāliya, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the wish-fulfilling tree of devotees, first moved to satisfy their longing. He violently agitated the lake so that they would think their husband had awakened and gather in his bedchamber:

In less than a moment, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra reached Kāliya's bedchamber, and the serpent wives' eyes fell upon His dark and tender limbs. Seeing a child who was such a treasury of beauty, they stood stunned for several moments. Beauty flowed from their own bodies, and they took pride in their appearance, considering the maidens of heaven inferior by comparison. Yet only today had they seen Nīlasundara's beauty, which enchanted the universe. They gazed without blinking at the form that delighted the three worlds, but suddenly their hearts began to tremble: "What will become of this child? What will our cruel husband do to this incomparably beautiful boy?"
Kanhāī possessed an exceedingly tender body. He entered the place where Kāliya slept, and the serpent women looked upon Him in distress.

The serpent wives' hearts overflowed. The attraction of His beauty compelled them to learn Nīlasundara's identity, and in choked, very quiet voices they asked Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra a question. Yet they lacked the patience to await His answer. The imagined picture of the beautiful child's impending ruin danced before their eyes. Anxiously they signaled Him to flee the place at once and then said plainly:
"Whose child are You? We have told You again and again, yet You do not run away. The moment he awakens, yawns, and sees You, You will be burned to ashes."

Within the beginningless and endless pastimes of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, Vrajendra's son and the ocean of divine play, no one has ever been able to mark even the smallest part of one pastime with a definite beginning and end, saying, "It began here and concluded there." Nor will anyone be able to do so throughout endless time. No one has ever known where or when a particular wave arose in this shoreless ocean or where and after how long it dissolved. In Vṛndāvana, which is intrinsic to His being, there are no material divisions and no material measure of time. For the conduct of divine play, all objects and the apparently new regulation of time are certainly present, but they are wholly composed of eternity, consciousness, and bliss. We may grasp a little of that nonmaterial reality indirectly through these words. Otherwise it is completely indescribable and inconceivable. Thus no one can discover the beginning or end of any pastime.
By the animation of His grace, we may understand to some degree where Vrajendra's son's inconceivable power of play turns a current of pastime, conceals it, and later awakens it to flow again. Yet the source and destination of that current remain forever unknown. Only five praharas earlier, countless events had taken place in Vrajendra's home as the background to this pastime of churning Kāliya. But who knows where they truly began or where their ending will be found? What we experience as their origin, what we perceive as their continuing course, and what we designate as their conclusion are merely points in a current that stretches immeasurably far, or rather beginninglessly and endlessly, under the direction of divine power.
To increase the joy of Vrajarāja's son and bestow upon the world the spotless spiritual rasa of bliss intrinsic to His being, the current of pastime turns and manifests near the required point, flows toward a designated point in the intended direction, and then becomes hidden there for a particular purpose and the nourishment of rasa, only to manifest again when the occasion arrives. The following events make this clearer. About five and a half praharas before the present moment, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra slept upon a bed prepared by His mother:

Prince Kanhāī awoke and cried, "Mother, where have you gone from beside Me? Balarāma Bhaiyā is sleeping here with Me." Nanda and Yaśodā awakened and called Hari close. Meanwhile dawn arrived. The stars vanished from the sky, the sun arose, and darkness departed. The queen awoke and began her household work, forgetting the night's distress. She called all the women who churned nearby and said, "Dawn has come. Rise and churn the yogurt." Sūra says that Nanda's queen herself grasped the churning rope and staff.

While these events unfolded in Vraja, at that same time a beautiful background to the dream of the Supreme Brahman, Puruṣottama, had already been prepared. The Supreme Brahman in human form dreamed while the vīṇā of His supreme devotee, Devarṣi Nārada, resounded in the private chamber of Kaṁsa, king of Mathurā. The divine sage, who was the very heart of the Lord, advised that cruel ruler:
Sage Nārada said to the king, "Your death has appeared. Why do you allow Him to remain? The serpent Kāliya lives in Yamunā, so order lotuses brought from there. Send a messenger to Vraja and frighten Nanda greatly. When the people of Vraja hear this, they will be terrified. Nanda's boy will go to fetch the flowers, and the serpent will strike Him there." Mother placed a kiss of anxious love upon His lips, which put the bimba fruit to shame, and said:
"Go ask Your father what has happened. I offer myself to Your lotus face. Kaṁsa is agitated because of You."

English translation
After hearing Mother, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra went to Bābā. Before He arrived, however, a faint ray of His boundless majesty arose. Though the innocent appearance of the enjoyer of childhood pastimes remained outwardly intact, its light spread within Him, and He mentally resolved upon the next course of action. Bābā then explained the situation:
Śyāma ran to Nanda and understood that His parents were weeping. "I shall remove their grief at once and send lotuses to Kaṁsa. Bābā, tell Me what has happened. Why are You lost in so much anxious thought?" Nanda said, "What can I tell You, beloved child? Kaṁsa bears some hostility toward You. Since Your birth, so many dangers have been averted, Kanhāī. Sūra's Śyāma, the deities of our family have protected You everywhere."

English translation
Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's exceedingly sweet reassurance then resounded in everyone's ears:
"You say that some deity protects Me. That deity remains beside Me and never goes anywhere outside Vraja. He will seize Kaṁsa by the hair, drag him upon the earth, and kill him. All of you worship that deity together, and he will quickly provide the lotuses to send."

English translation
At last the smile that eternally adorned the lips of Vrajarāja's darling seemed to blossom a little more, and with a slight laugh He added something further. In truth, however, He did not laugh or speak those words. Yogamāyā, expert in making the impossible occur, laughed through His lips. Before disappearing, she erased the entire event from the memories of the queen and king of Vraja, the townspeople, and the women of Vraja and gathered it into her veil:
"Bābā Nanda, why are You grieving?" Saying this, He entangled them in Yogamāyā's enchantment. Sūradāsa says that the Lord at once made His parents forget their sorrow.

For the present, everyone completely forgot that cruel Kaṁsa's messenger had come and ordered them to send lotuses. Even Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the abode of infinite majesty, again wrapped Himself in the covering of innocent childhood. The omniscient Lord appeared to forget everything and went to the forest to graze the cows.
According to the design of the great power of divine play, this scene appeared upon the beginningless and endless canvas of Vrajendra's son's pastimes. Then a dense covering of forgetfulness was placed over it as though nothing had happened. Or one may say that the current of pastime flowed from an indefinable point and divided into two streams. One passed through Kaṁsa's palace in Mathurā. The other touched Nīlasundara's dream, created a faint vibration in the ocean of the queen of Vraja's parental love, and disappeared, not forever, but to manifest at the proper time and vigorously move the churning rod of anguish within the royal couple's pastime of churning parental affection.
The current flowing from Mathurā likewise continued for a time and then suddenly disappeared. It too would manifest again at the proper occasion, ultimately filling Vraja's residents and royal couple with supreme joy. Before that, it was now reappearing to awaken compassion within the serpent wives' hearts. Moved and inspired by this current of divine play, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra told them, "Kaṁsa has sent Me specifically to see Kāliya. Awaken him."

The distressed serpent wives repeatedly pleaded, "Child, run away!"
Again and again they said to Sūra's Lord, "Why do You not flee even now?"

Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra continued to laugh. More than that, He looked fearlessly at Kāliya's wives and reasoned with them:
"Why should I fear this serpent, foolish women?"

English translation
The serpent women grew increasingly distressed, wondering how they could make the obstinate child flee at once. With tear-filled eyes, they repeatedly cursed Kaṁsa and coaxed Nīlasundara:
"Accept our words and abandon Your insistence. Know that the force of the entire serpent will fall upon You. Seeing You has awakened immense affection within us. Whose son are You, and from where have You come? May that Kaṁsa die and his dynasty perish. He has committed this outrage by sending You here."

At that moment Kāliya turned in his sleep. The hearts of the serpent wives, overwhelmed by affection, seemed ready to burst: "This child is entering a terrible danger. How can we convince this delicate, obstinate boy, this treasury of beauty?" They signaled Him to speak softly, but Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra called even more clearly, "I shall kill Kaṁsa. I shall kill him!" Their eyes were already wet, but hearing His answer filled them with utter despair. In faint, tear-choked voices they lamented Nīlasundara's seemingly fatal resolve:
"I shall kill Kaṁsa, relieve the earth of its burden, and deliver the immortals, O serpent women!" Hearing the words of Sūra's Lord, a serpent wife replied, "Why will You not leave now? Your mind has become intent upon death."
