English translation

The queen of Vraja sits upon a stool fashioned of ruby. Nearby, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra and Balarāma play in the courtyard, scattering beauty from their charming limbs. Watching their game, the mother has forgotten everything else:

English translation

The mother sits upon a jeweled stool while her darling plays nearby.
His beautiful dark body is a temple of virtues and fills her heart with immense delight.
His face, a treasury of beauty, shames the autumn full moon.
Its splendor enchants millions of Cupids, and its loveliness bewilders the three worlds.
The charming radiance of his restless, moving, reddish eyes
defeats deer and wagtails and delights the mind. What beauty can the lotus claim?
Lovely dark curls hang loose over his face.
His tender cheeks, softly opening speech, and curved brows are beloved.
She spends her day gazing at this beauty, and nothing else enters her mind.
Tell me, why should eyes that have tasted the nectar of such beauty desire anything else?

English translation

It has become the daily occupation of restless Kṛṣṇacandra and Balarāma to play without ceasing. Mother Yaśodā too has but one occupation: to follow her sons constantly, as though bound to them by a thread.

English translation

The two brothers never remain still. They play and devise countless games.
Rising, walking, sitting, roaming, and running, they perfect their restless ways.
Wherever the two tender darlings wander, their minds absorbed in childhood play,
there their mother follows lovingly, her enchanted gaze fixed upon them.
Sometimes amid the children's crowd her darling disappears beyond a doorway.
Tears fill her eyes, and she writhes like a helpless fish out of water.
The mother rises and calls, but he neither looks nor returns when she searches.
Milk streaming from her breast, she runs, catches Mohana, and clasps him to her neck.

English translation

With friends of their own age such as Śrīdāma, Subala, Vasanta, Kaḍāra, and Arjuna, the brothers sometimes went as far as the bank of the Yamunā and rolled upon its white sand. At other times they roamed through the garden of Kālindī, covered by dense, dark tamāla trees, and played many games amid bowers formed by kadamba trees:

With Śrīdāma, Subala, and other cowherd boys of their own age, the two rolled with delight upon the white sands of the Yamunā. Rāma and Keśava wandered through Kālindī's garden, thickly enclosed by dark tamāla trees and splendid with kadamba bowers.

English translation

Today too, the brothers came noisily with the cowherd boys to a beautiful sandy place beside Kālindī. Filling their cupped hands with white sand, they ran about scattering it upon one another. Mother Yaśodā had been with them until half a ghaṭī earlier, when Nanda unexpectedly summoned her for urgent work. She tried hard to persuade Rāma and Śyāma to come with her, but Kṛṣṇa stamped his feet upon the sand and cried, refusing to leave the game and return home. In the end she had to entrust their protection to the attendants and go. She departed alone, intending to return as quickly as possible, but her mind remained entangled upon that sandy bank with her blue jewel.

English translation

The instant their mother disappeared from sight, the cowherd boys scattered in every direction like young birds freed from a cage. Who would listen to the attendants? They too were enchanted by Kṛṣṇacandra's lovely childhood play, and why should they interfere without cause? The little boys were merely throwing dust upon one another. What harm could there be? If they went too far, the attendants would catch them. Reassured by such thoughts, the women drank the nectar of the game while the high-spirited boys did as they pleased. Kṛṣṇacandra filled his cupped hands with sand, ran up behind Śrīdāma, and poured it over his head. One grain entered Śrīdāma's eye. Rubbing it, he set out to catch Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa fled, but Śrīdāma ran after him and caught him a short distance away.

English translation

Kṛṣṇacandra covered his eyes with his hands and lay down upon the sand. Laughing, Śrīdāma began scattering sand over his back. He had barely started when Balarāma and the other cowherd children together dumped a great quantity of sand upon Śrīdāma's head and back. Releasing Kṛṣṇacandra, Śrīdāma turned to grapple with them. Seizing the opportunity, Kṛṣṇa rose and ran away.

English translation

At that very moment, the great sage Durvāsā, son of Atri, arrived along a narrow garden path and saw Kṛṣṇacandra in this childhood pose. The eminent sage had come longing to behold Kṛṣṇacandra, Bhagavān himself, supreme beyond all. Yet he was astonished by the guise in which he saw the Supreme. Ah, he was rolling in the dust. Look:

All his limbs were gray with dust. His hair was tangled, no garment covered his sacred body, and he ran utterly naked with the boys. Could Hari, supreme beyond all, truly appear in such a form? The sage was filled with wonder.

More than that, a doubt entered even the great sage's mind, purified by austerity. World-enchanting Māyā cast the shadow of her veil upon him, and bewildered, he thought:

English translation

Swinging upon doubt, Durvāsā fell far beyond the boundary of truth. At that very moment Kṛṣṇacandra abruptly stopped playing. It was as though his omniscient power whispered that the great ascetic, radiant son of the chaste Anasūyā, had become confused and must be freed from delusion and shown grace. Kṛṣṇacandra looked toward the sage, and the other boys followed his gaze. At first they shrank back from the ascetic's tawny mass of matted hair and the blazing splendor upon his face. Then Kṛṣṇacandra laughed and called, “Śrīdāma, you lost! If you do not believe me, come and ask that holy man.” As he spoke, he started toward the sage, and the circle of friends followed.

The great sage stood silently beneath a vast kadamba tree. His bearing was profoundly grave, the radiance of austerity seemed to stream from his limbs, and a strange light shone in his eyes. Yet as soon as Kṛṣṇacandra approached, everything changed. His body trembled and his composure became unsteady. The splendor of his limbs and the divine light of his eyes vanished as though absorbed into the great emerald radiance of Kṛṣṇa's body. The sage entered an indescribable state. Coming very close, Kṛṣṇacandra asked, “Holy father, you saw my game. Tell me whether Śrīdāma lost to me.” Durvāsā stared at him with wide eyes but gave no answer. Kṛṣṇa waited a little, yet the sage remained silent and seemed to lose even the strength to stand. As though falling, he sat upon the sand. Kṛṣṇacandra raised his tiny arms and climbed into his lap. “Father, will you not tell me? Did Śrīdāma lose or not?” Still there was no reply. Seeing that the sage would not speak, Kṛṣṇa climbed down and told his friends, “Brothers, this holy father does not speak at all. Come, let us play as before.” As he said this, he burst into laughter.

English translation

The laughter upon Kṛṣṇacandra's red lips was not the natural laughter of a child absorbed in childhood play. It was the laughter of his Yogamāyā, whose power accomplishes the impossible. Yogamāyā manifested to show the royal sage a portion of the wondrous divine power of Kṛṣṇacandra, Bhagavān himself and abode of limitless majesty. She laughed through the opening of his lips, drew the sage toward him, and in an instant Durvāsā entered Kṛṣṇacandra's tiny mouth.

Yogamāyā closed the door behind him and opened the way ahead. Durvāsā began to experience: “Where am I? What realm is this? This world is immense, yet entirely without people. There is no one even among these ranges of forests. I have grown weary wandering through them, but I have not seen a single living being. What is that ahead? It is an enormous python. Ah, it is making me its prey. Let Hari's will be done! Even after the python swallowed me, my body remains unharmed and I am alive. Yes, this is an entire universe, with its seven upper worlds and seven lower regions, everything in its proper place. * * * How long have I wandered across these islands? No, now I shall practice austerity upon that white mountain ahead. * * * How long have I practiced austerity here? A thousand million years have passed. Now the occasional cosmic dissolution has arrived. The ocean's towering waves flood the entire earth. No land remains; everywhere is water. Where will this limitless mass of water carry me? Only when it ends can I reach a shore. By divine knowledge I perceive that a thousand yugas have passed, yet I continue to drift upon this water. Now I am sinking, and my memory fades. * * * I had entered samādhi and have now emerged from it. Everything is water. No, here is yet another universe. This is an opening in its shell. Why not enter and see? * * * What a divine creation lies beyond the aperture! What is this place? These are the worlds situated at the summit of this universe. * * * By cosmic reckoning, the lifespan of one Brahmā has ended, yet I have wandered ceaselessly through these worlds. Here is another opening in the cosmic shell. Nārāyaṇa! Nārāyaṇa! Nārāyaṇa! I am entering it. * * * Passing through, I emerge from the other side. Ah, this fathomless, endless, measureless expanse of water, and the millions upon millions of cosmic eggs floating within it! * * * Victory to you, Lord! Today I have beheld the Virajā River. How incomparable is the beauty of its bank. Here are heaps of divine rubies, sapphires, emeralds, Syamantaka jewels, rucaka gems, and Kaustubha jewels. This vast and enchanting riverbank, pure as crystal, is inlaid with pearls, rubies, and touchstones, and adorned with supremely divine jewels of dark, white, green, and red hues. The sight has fulfilled me. * * * I have crossed Virajā and reached the precincts of Govardhana, king of mountains, crowned by a hundred peaks. Here are groves of pārijāta, rows of wish-fulfilling trees, and herds of roaming wish-fulfilling cows. King of mountains, I bow to you. * * * Now Vṛndāvana has appeared. How beautiful is this forest of Vṛndā, adorned with fresh leaves, fragrant with the pollen of sandal, mandāra, campaka, and other blossoms, and humming with the sweet voices of bees. How beautiful are the rows of mango, orange, jackfruit, palmyra, coconut, rose-apple, jujube, date, areca, hog-plum, citron, banana, wood-apple, and pomegranate trees laden with divine fruit. How deep and cool is the shade of these vast priyāla, sāla, sacred fig, neem, silk-cotton, and tamarind trees. How captivating is the fragrance of jasmine, mālatī, kunda, ketakī, mādhavī, and yūthikā flowers. At the sight of Vṛndāvana, my eyes are soothed. There before me Kālindī flows with a murmuring sound. * * * Victory! I have reached the realm of Goloka. How incomparable is the beauty of these supremely divine temples of conscious bliss built of jewels and these bower cottages. * * * The first gate shines yellow and is adorned with jeweled, diamond-studded doors. Its guardian is Vīrabhānu, seated upon a jeweled throne, adorned with jeweled ornaments and crown, and splendid in yellow garments. At the second gate stands the youthful, dark-complexioned cowherd Candrabhānu, beautifully arrayed. At the third is the flute-bearing, dark and lovely youth Sūryabhānu. The fourth gate has come, guarded by Vasubhānu, whose ripe bimba-fruit lips and smiling lotus face are wondrously beautiful. The fifth gate is guarded by Devabhānu, whose limbs are anointed with liquid agarwood, sandalwood, musk, and saffron, and whose neck bears a garland of kadamba flowers. At the sixth gate is a flowered arch painted with many pictures. Its guardian Śakrabhānu wears jeweled earrings and a garland of sandalwood leaves around his neck. The cowherd Ratnabhānu presides at the seventh gate. Supārśva guards the eighth, a gentle smile on his lips and a sandal-paste mark beautifying his forehead. The ninth gate is governed by Subala, the tenth by Sudāma, and the eleventh by Śrīdāma, upon whose chest hangs a blooming mālatī garland. Ah, how lovely are Śrīdāma's limbs. The twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth gates are each guarded by millions upon millions of cowherd women. * * * Ah, what is this? My eyes cannot remain steady. There is an orb of light like the brilliance of countless millions of suns. Victory, victory! Within this radiant sphere is a supremely divine lotus with a hundred thousand petals. Wanderer of Goloka, victory to you! You yourself sit upon that lotus. Lord, your incomparable beauty enchants the universe. Speech lacks the power to touch even its shadow. * * * What is this sudden, wondrous laughter? The movement of those red lips is precisely the same. No, it is not laughter, but moonlight. Its rays enfold me. Now I have entered the mouth of the Lord of Goloka, sovereign of limitless universes. The door behind has closed and those ahead are opening, but my eyes are closing.”

At that moment the sage emerged from Kṛṣṇa's mouth. A moment later he opened his eyes. This was not Goloka, but the same Vraja in Bhāratavarṣa, the same sandy bank beside Kālindī, the very same playground of sand. Kṛṣṇa was still playing with his friends just as before. Durvāsā remembered arriving only moments earlier and doubting why the Supreme Kṛṣṇa would behave in such a way. He had decided that this was not the Supreme Lord. At that instant Kṛṣṇacandra had approached, spoken to him, climbed into his lap, descended, and laughed. Then he had entered that tiny mouth, and after that...!

The sage joined his palms and bowed his head. Kṛṣṇa's limitless majesty shone within his understanding, while his mind and senses overflowed with a new sweetness of divine rasa. Before his eyes stood the same playful form of Kṛṣṇacandra. Gazing upon it, he began to murmur:

I bow within my mind to Nanda's son, the charming child whose broad eyes resemble fresh lotuses, whose lips are like bimba fruit, whose complexion is that of a rain-laden cloud, whose smile is gentle, and whose slow gait is sweet and beautiful.
I worship the child who plays upon the bank of Kālindī's daughter, adorned with ringing anklets, a nine-jeweled girdle, a lovely necklace strung with protective tiger claws, and a black mark that wards off the pain of the evil eye.
Upon his face, beautiful as the full moon, shine curling locks whose tips bend and whose hue resembles a fresh rain cloud. To Nanda's son, together with Bala, I offer reverence again and again. Those who bow their heads before him become cool and peaceful like night-blooming lilies.

English translation

“His broad eyes possess the beauty of fresh lotuses, and his lips resemble bimba fruit. A gentle smile rests upon them. His limbs have the luster of a rain-filled cloud, and his childhood dress is exceedingly beautiful. He walks with a sweet, lovely, gentle gait. I bow inwardly to Nanda's son. Bells and anklets adorn his feet; a girdle of nine jewels adorns his waist and rings with a jingling sound. A beautiful necklace hangs upon his neck, strung with tiger claws as protective emblems against illness. His mother has placed a black dot upon his face to ward off the evil eye, increasing his beauty still more. I worship this supremely beautiful son of Nanda who performs varied childhood games upon the bank of the Yamunā, daughter of Kalinda. Curled locks beautify his face, lovely as the full moon, and appear like the blue-black hue of a fresh rain cloud. For those who bow their heads at Kṛṣṇacandra's feet, he becomes cooling and peaceful like the night-blooming lily. Again and again I bow to Nanda's son together with Balarāma.”

Tears flowed from the sage's eyes. He rose and set out for Badarikāśrama, absorbed in meditation upon Kṛṣṇa and repeating “Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa.” He went not to practice austerity but to remember Kṛṣṇa without obstruction and to drink the nectar of his name. Durvāsā had obtained the supreme fruit of austerities accumulated through countless births. He had experienced the highest bliss of seeing and touching Kṛṣṇacandra and, surrendering everything, had become Kṛṣṇa's servant. What duty could remain for him now?

English translation

So much had occurred, yet in the eyes of the cowherd children and within the attendants' awareness, nothing at all had happened. They knew only that Kṛṣṇacandra had climbed into Durvāsā's lap and descended when the ascetic remained silent. To them this was a trifling event and left no impression. With tumultuous cries, the children again made the riverbank resound as before.

Queen Yaśodā now arrived. Keeping Kṛṣṇacandra occupied with varied games and lovely sights, she led the boys home through the grove, across Nanda's garden, and onto the royal road. From there Kṛṣṇacandra visited the homes of the women of Vraja, giving them the joy of seeing him, and then entered his own home while the cowherd boys departed for theirs. Evening spread her veil over Vraja. The mother bathed her sons, dressed and adorned them, and served their evening meal. Exhausted from play, Rāma and Śyāma began falling asleep in the midst of supper. Somehow she gave them milk, washed their faces, carried them in her lap, and laid them upon their bed:

Bala and Mohana are both weary.
They eat a little and sip some milk; seeing them yawn, their mother knows their state.
“Rise, my darlings,” she says, washing their faces. “I shall carry you to bed.
You sleep while I lull you and sing something in a sweet voice.”
At once the two brothers lie down, and sleep comes over them.
Sūradāsa says: Yaśodā rejoices as child Govinda rests upon his bed.
