English translation

"Oh! Where have the calves gone?" A lively boy drew everyone's attention to them. The morsels in their hands remained suspended there as every gaze turned toward the nearby grass-green ground where, only moments before, great herds of calves had been roaming freely. Now not one remained. No one knew where they had all gone.

The cowherd boys could not immediately understand what had happened. While the exuberant delight of their meal upon the riverbank was unfolding, they had been plunging and rising in a river of bliss until they nearly lost all awareness. Every other memory had almost vanished, and only Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the friend of their lives, and His playful pastimes remained within their hearts and vital being. During that very time, the multitude of calves had gradually moved forward. One beautiful stretch of land thick with green grass after another appeared before them, and, enticed by it, they continued in that direction. Little by little they entered the distant forest, so far away that they disappeared entirely from the sight of their keepers:

English translation

The forest clearing that had resounded with the children's joyful uproar was suddenly covered by profound silence. Upon failing to see their calves, all the boys became intensely frightened:

Several of the older boys immediately regained their composure. The likely situation occurred to them, and they said:

"Brother Kṛṣṇa, look! We are all worried, for not a single calf can be seen. It appears that they were overwhelmed by desire for tender new blades of grass. Therefore, without becoming even slightly sluggish or pausing anywhere, they wandered very far away. We should now go in that direction, find their trail, and drive them back to the edge of the forest."

Before they could finish, a small cowherd boy began speaking with the air of an expert. "No, no, what are you all saying? Until today, did even one calf ever wander far from Kanhaiyā Bhaiyā? Something else must have happened here. Have you forgotten that enormous python? Kannū killed him, but we simply left him there. We should have piled forest wood upon him and burned him. Otherwise, snakes can drink the air and come back to life. Who knows whether he revived? Perhaps he has taken the calves...." As the boy spoke, his voice became choked.

"Some other demon may also have come," a third group announced. In this way the cowherd boys offered different conjectures, but all agreed that they should go and search for the calves. A very clear line of fear had appeared upon every face. Only Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the friend of their very lives, showed no change of expression and not the slightest trace of agitation from fear. The same lovely smile remained upon His crimson lips, and His lotus eyes retained their full blossoming joy. Seeing His friends afraid, He had merely stood up from His place. Apart from this, nothing in Him had changed.

Now Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's eyes also became slightly restless, not from any fear, but from His desire to remove the fear He saw in His friends. Then the nectar-flowing voice of the giver of fearlessness to the entire universe rang out:

But how could they accept this? Could Nīlasundara leave them while the cowherd boys continued eating? The senses can perceive their objects only while joined to life. Have senses bereft of life ever experienced any taste? They rejected Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's proposal with one voice. Forget eating, who could accept even that Kanhaiyā Bhaiyā should go alone to search for the calves? Śrīdāma seized the edge of His yellow garment, and Subala placed both hands upon Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's shoulders. Those two represented His countless friends and conveyed the feelings in all their hearts.

The situation became unusual. Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra was distressed because the supremely joyful meal of His friends upon the riverbank had been interrupted. He wanted them to continue eating while He brought back the calves. The boys, however, lovingly insisted that He must not go. Nīlasundara reasoned with them at length, but no one listened. At last Nandanandana adopted a final argument. "Look, brothers, we do not know where or in which direction the calves have gone, and the forest ahead is dense. Suppose all of us set out to find them and search in different directions. If even one among us becomes lost or forgets the path, what a disaster and difficulty that would be. We could not return home without finding him. Therefore, I wish to go alone. I shall not disappear from your sight. I shall merely go to that tall tamāla tree and call out. Remain seated here and keep watching Me. You see it every day: as soon as I call, all the calves come bounding to Me. It is very easy for Me to summon them. It will take only half a moment. I shall bring them back, and then we shall all eat joyfully together."

English translation

As He spoke, a faint yet exceedingly pure line of wondrous laughter appeared upon Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's lips, which rivaled the bimba fruit, and this time the boys had no reply. How could those simple-hearted cowherd boys know that this was not Kanhaiyā Bhaiyā's natural smile? It was the gleam of Yogamāyā's veil, she who makes the impossible possible, manifesting to arrange the next design of the inconceivable great power of līlā. From between Nīlasundara's lips she spread the covering of a fine cloth, as though dressing and concealing the friends of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's life in a garment they now required. Within moments, the boys too had to go to the same place where the calves had gone, yet no one in the universe possessed the power to move them unless they were covered by Yogamāyā. Nor could they willingly agree to leave Nīlasundara. Her intervention was therefore necessary.

Yogamāyā arrived, and by the brilliance of her veil the boys, though still fully conscious, became enchanted. They no longer had any reply to Kanhaiyā Bhaiyā's reasoning. His proposal was accepted, and Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra set out to search for the calves just as He was, still holding in His hand the morsel of rice mixed with yogurt.

English translation

The masses of green grass swayed luxuriantly. Walking across them, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra reached the foot of the tamāla tree. Standing there, He looked in every direction but found no trace of the calves. In a loud voice He called each calf by name, yet not one came running toward Him from the forest. He thought, "Perhaps they have entered a dense part of the neighboring forest and My call cannot reach them." With this concern, He left the grassy field and entered the woods. But even after going to every part of the forest and calling, He received no sign.

He visited dense bowers, extremely difficult forest regions, and dangerous places, yet nowhere did He see even a single mark of a calf. Thinking they might have climbed upward, attracted by the greenery of Girirāja, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra went toward the mountain. He examined every likely place around its slopes and then climbed the mountain itself. He searched there and combed through Govardhana's caves, but all His efforts were fruitless. No one knew how many places He visited in His search, yet the calves did not appear. How could Nīlasundara rest until He found them? It seemed He would go on searching forever. His flute remained tucked into His waistband, His horn and cane pressed beneath His arm, and His palm shone with the morsel of rice mixed with yogurt as He searched ceaselessly, again and again, through dense forests, bowers, ravines, rocky tracts, and mountain caves:

It is difficult to say who was granted the sight that day of this unprecedented childhood absorption of the Supreme Brahman, Puruṣottama, the abode of infinite majesty whom the śrutis designate by the words "omniscient" and "all-knowing." Who can say whether the celestial beings witnessed Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, Bhagavān Himself, searching for the calves while adorned with the wondrous trappings of innocent enchantment? Inspired by the inconceivable great power of līlā, what curtain of what color hung before each observer? What kind of covering had been cast upon each person's eyes, and to what degree? How much of this supremely sweet līlā of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra was unveiled to each one, and in what form? Who truly knows these things?

Yet it is clear that one person certainly had this vision and continued to behold it: lotus-born Brahmā, the creator of the universe himself. This līlā was taking place for his sake. Even so, one cannot say that every aspect of it stood revealed to him. By the supreme good fortune of the lotus-born creator and in order to fulfill him, this wave arose within the endless, shoreless ocean of Vrajendra's son Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's līlā. Now we must see where it comes to rest.

Earlier that very day, the residents of heaven had become intoxicated with joy upon witnessing Aghāsura's deliverance. The sounds of their conches, kettledrums, and mṛdaṅgas, their tumultuous cries of victory, and the sweet currents of their hymns had filled every direction. Janaloka, Maharloka, and Tapoloka echoed with them. Even Satyaloka began to resound, and four-faced Brahmā descended. Seeing everything, he stood motionless with wonder. Then he witnessed the meal upon the riverbank and Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's free childhood play there. All eight eyes of the creator were soothed. It seemed that he had beheld such a childhood absorption of the Supreme Lord for the first time that very day.

Yet as water cannot quench the thirst of a person afflicted by a raging fever but only makes it increase, so the creator's eyes were cooled by drinking the rasa of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's līlā while remaining unsatisfied. Indeed, his thirst to drink that rasa became stronger and stronger. The lotus-born Brahmā's very life grew restless. "If only a single particle of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's grace might touch me once more, and these eyes might receive a little further taste of the sweetness of His līlā."

English translation

The lotus-born Brahmā's desire appeared exactly as it was within Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's merciful heart. No one has ever met with disappointment there. "So be it" resounds within that heart without cease. Without the four-faced creator even knowing, the entire scene from beginning to end was arranged behind the curtain. The great power of līlā placed the universe-creator's mind upon her palm and began creating within it whatever images she desired. In truth, she was drawing those forms, but Brahmā's ego received them as his own inspiration and his own plan.

The lotus-born Brahmā began considering what method to adopt. "How may I taste more of the sweetness of this līlā? Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra is absorbed in childhood play, and the boys have forgotten themselves. What if, at such a moment, I bewilder the calves with illusion and move them elsewhere? Let me see what becomes of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, Bhagavān Himself, while He is intoxicated with the rasa of childhood līlā. When He sets out to search for them, the sweetness of an unprecedented childhood mood will surely appear. A celestial Gaṅgā of līlā-rasa blossoming from innocent enchantment will begin to flow, and by bathing within it I shall be fulfilled. Yes, this is right. Let it be so."

English translation

Having formed this resolve, Brahmā descended unnoticed by all into that dark-green grassy field of Vṛndāvana and proceeded to bewilder the calves with illusion. Beyond the green clusters of grass, the creator produced an even more tender variety and then, by his influence, turned the calves' eyes toward it. Enticed by the grass, they ran there. At once another stretch of forest farther ahead began waving with grass more beautiful still. Before the calves had taken even one or two mouthfuls, their attention moved toward it, and within moments they crossed the intervening field and arrived there. Yet the progression of greenery had not ended. Ahead lay what seemed a vast heap of the most tender grass of an even finer kind.

Thus, producing increasingly beautiful and delicious grass farther and farther ahead and tempting the calves with it, Brahmā led them beyond Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's sight. It was as though the calves had been deprived of the nectar-showering gaze of their eternal keeper. In the next moment, another of the lotus-born creator's illusions spread. The calves lost all awareness and, in that state, were placed together inside a solitary mountain cave somewhere in Vraja.

English translation

Brahmā did not become content after doing only this. Success is the mother of greed. A fresh inspiration arose deep within the creator: "What if I also bewilder these cowherd boys with illusion and take them to the same place?" He had seen Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra leave His meal and go in search of the calves. When would so beautiful an opportunity come again? The lotus-born Brahmā hurried swiftly to the bank of Yamunā.

The cowherd boys saw nothing. Their eyes were filled with Nīlasundara, and their gaze remained fixed upon Kanhaiyā Bhaiyā. They saw only, "There is Kanhaiyā beneath the shade of that tamāla tree." Why would they look toward four-faced Brahmā? Yet Brahmā certainly beheld them from very near. As soon as the creator's gaze fell upon them, the boys seemed to become absorbed in their ecstatic contemplation and lost their external awareness. The lotus-born one transported them to the same place where the countless calves lay unconscious.

English translation

Having moved the calves and cowherd boys elsewhere and witnessed the effect of what he believed to be his illusion, the lotus-born Brahmā could scarcely contain his elation. Here the speaker of the four Vedas lost his way. Had he tried to examine the situation in the light of his vast knowledge, he would have clearly seen that no one possessed the power to bewilder those calves whom Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra personally tended with His lotus hands, feeding them tender grasses and leaves gathered by His own hand, holding them upon His lap, and lovingly kissing their faces. Nor could anyone bewilder the cowherd boys, the friends of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's very life. Far from enchanting any resident of the spiritual realm, the illusion of Brahmā, creator of the universe, could not even approach them.

This was the inspiration of Vrajendra's son's own inconceivable great power of līlā. The shadow of His Yogamāyā potency had fallen upon the calves and boys, and thus they had become enchanted. Brahmā's illusion could not touch them. Yet the creator had no time to look in that direction. Absorbed in his own design, he had completed what he wished to do and now considered his next step. "Should I remain here or depart? Suppose Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra arrives while searching for them and sees me. Then the sweetness of the līlā will not manifest, and every possibility of fulfilling my desire will end." Immersed in this concern, the lotus-born one judged it best to withdraw and instantly disappeared. Or rather, having performed the auspicious invocation to one of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's supremely charming and mysterious līlās, he seemed to enter behind the curtain so that he might put on another costume and return to act upon the stage:

Born from the lotus, Brahmā then entered the midst of that scene. Wishing to behold another charming manifestation of the greatness of the Lord of Māyā, he took the calves and then the calf-herding boys elsewhere and disappeared. Remaining in the sky, he had earlier witnessed the mighty Lord's deliverance of Aghāsura and attained supreme astonishment.

English translation

Despite His extraordinary efforts, the enjoyer of childhood līlā found no trace of the calves. Appearing weary, He began to reflect. "It does not seem possible for Me to find them alone within such a vast forest. Whenever I search in one direction, perhaps they move elsewhere. Otherwise I would certainly have found them. I need the help of My friends. Let us form groups and search for them on every side."

Thinking in this way, the seemingly disheartened Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra turned back toward the riverbank. By His mere resolve, countless universes arise and are destroyed. He is the original source of all knowledge in the cosmos, the Lord of every universe, the Supreme Lord of lords, and the crown jewel of the omniscient. Yet that day, even after such tireless labor, He could not find any sign of the calves, knew nothing of their movements, and returned in discouragement, hoping to receive the cowherd boys' help. All glory, O Lord, to Your incomparable childhood līlā and Your absorption in childhood rasa.

Now the Lord of the universe was to meet disappointment upon the riverbank as well. He reached the place where He had left His friends eating, but no one and nothing remained. Filled with wonder, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra looked everywhere and began calling each boy by name. In an exceedingly loud voice, Nīlasundara called Śrīdāma, Subala, Devaprastha, Varūthapa, Kiṅkiṇī, Tokakṛṣṇa, Aṁśa, Bhadrasena, Arjuna, Vasanta, Ujjvala, Kokila, Madhumaṅgala, Puṣpāṅka, Bhṛṅgura, Bhṛṅgāra, Sandhika, Pallava, Maṅgala, and the others. Only echoes returned from the forest trees and mountain peaks. Not one friend answered Him.

More astonishing still, no mark of the boys or any of their possessions remained. He remembered which boy had placed his horn, flute, cane, or lunch sling at which spot, yet Nandanandana could no longer find even the mark left by its placement. During the meal, the boys had fashioned many kinds of vessels from lotus leaves, lotus petals, tree leaves, and other materials. While eating fruit, they had scattered peels of bananas, citrons, and other fruits here and there. They would not have carried all these things away, so they should have remained. Yet not even a particle of any object could be found. This was certainly the same part of the riverbank. The lake, the rows of trees, and the bright white sands beside the sun-god's daughter appeared unchanged. Only the boys and every object connected with them had vanished.

English translation

Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra thought, "Perhaps the boys have removed everything, erased every trace, and hidden nearby to play a joke upon Me while waiting to see what I shall do." As soon as this thought arose, Nīlasundara began calling and pleading with His friends in exceedingly humble words. "My dear brothers, just see how weary I have become from searching for the calves. Do none of you feel compassion for Me? Viśāla, My feet are aching. Come massage them, brother! × × × Brother Subala, see how every limb of My body is covered with perspiration. Come wipe Me with your shawl! × × × Payoda, Candana, Kunda, all of you are enjoying your joke while My throat is drying up. I am terribly thirsty. Come, brother, give Me water to drink. Do not delay any longer. × × × Brother Madhumaṅgala, Puṣpāṅka, Haṁsa, have you become angry with Me? No, brothers, I shall never offend you again. I shall do exactly as you say. Please come."

In this way, with a voice filled with pathos, Nandanandana called to no one knew how many boys. Everything was in vain. Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's humble plea echoed through every particle of the riverbank, and silence descended once more.

"Perhaps they have all gone into the forest to search for Me, since I have taken so long to return." Such thoughts arose within Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, and He resolved to enter the forest again and search for them Himself. Drops of perspiration glittered upon His forehead and cheeks. A soft, gently stirring breeze came to offer service to Nīlasundara and wipe away His perspiration, but where did He have time to accept that service? Without another moment's delay, He followed a narrow path into the forest. As before, He searched all around through bowers, mountain slopes, and ravines, calling again and again for both His friends and the calves:

English translation

But how could He find them when they were not there? After nearly circling the entire forest, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra returned again to the riverbank. Not one calf had been found in the woods, nor had He met even one friend, and now the radiant sun's chariot had turned across the western sky toward the mountain of sunset.

"What has happened to My calves? Where have My friends gone? Alas, how shall I return home without them?" Tears filled Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's eyes. At this point the limit was reached. Before even a fraction of a moment passed, the ocean of His divine majesty began to surge. Omniscience rose forth, absorbed His childhood mood into itself, and Nandanandana Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra became established in His all-knowing nature. What mystery could now remain unknown to Him? Every act and inner feeling of the creator of the universe, the past and the future, and even the subtlest vibration of the cosmos stood before Him as the eternal present. Suddenly and effortlessly, He knew everything: where the calves and cowherd boys were and how and why they had gone:
