English translation

All the city of Vraja is colored by the crimson glow of dawn. Concealed among the branches of the mango trees, a cuckoo calls, "Kuhū, kuhū." Its voice is so sweet that it seems Mahāmāyā, daughter of the mountain king and mother of melody, is hidden within its throat today, creating an utterly new and exquisitely nectarean rāga. The calls of other birds, the humming of bees, the hambā of rows of cows, the cowherds' cries of "Ho! Ho!" and the melodious songs of the beautiful cowherd women make the city of the lord of Vraja resound. At that same time, the queen of Vraja sings sweetly to awaken her Nīlamaṇi:

English translation

Awaken, prince of the king of Vraja! The lotus flowers have opened. The clusters of night lotuses have closed, and the bees have forgotten the vines.

Hear the calls of the night birds and the sounds throughout the forest. The cows low in their pens and hurry toward their calves.

The moon has faded and the sun shines forth while men and women sing. Sūrdās says: arise at dawn, dark Śyāma, bearer of the lotus.

English translation

For some reason, the lord of Vraja did not go to the cowshed today. Almost every day he left for it as soon as midnight ended, but today he remained behind. After bathing in the Kālindī and completing his morning prayers, he set out to worship the śālagrāma. Yet because Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra filled his inner thoughts, he mistakenly entered the sleeping chamber instead of going to Nārāyaṇa's temple. There he saw Queen Yaśodā immersed in bliss as she awakened Nīlamaṇi, and only then realized his error.

At that very moment, the queen removed the radiant silk covering her son's face. A wondrous garland of light seemed to spread everywhere, illuminating the sleeping chamber. Like lotuses opening at the touch of the sun's rays, every pore of Nanda and his queen blossomed with joy, and a river of bliss flowed through their hearts. The lord of Vraja gazed without blinking at his son's face. It seemed to him that the ocean had just been churned. This was no white silk, but foam gathered upon the ocean's breast. The queen's hand was no hand, but the churning rod. Under the force of churning, the foam had broken apart to reveal the full moon. "Is this my son's face? No, no. It is the full moon newly arisen from the churning of the ocean":

English translation

At dawn, Yaśomatī and Nanda rejoice as they behold Hari's face. Their hearts fill with bliss, opening like lotuses beneath the sun's rays.

Uncovering His face, Mother awakens Him: "Awaken, fountain of bliss, to whom I offer myself." It is as though the gods churned the ocean and its foam broke open to reveal the full moon.

He whom Śiva, Śeṣa, Brahmā, and the others praise, while the Vedic hymns declare "not this, not this," has appeared in Vraja as Gopāla, complete supreme bliss.

English translation

After hundreds of affectionate entreaties from Mother, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra opened His eyes. Lifting Him from the bed, she clasped Him to her heart. She repeatedly kissed His face while arranging His disheveled hair, then took fragrant water in a golden ewer and washed His lotus face. Drying it with the edge of her exceedingly soft linen veil, she urged Nīlamaṇi to eat His morning meal, and He accepted her loving request:

Dates, grapes, chironji, raisins, bright coconut, almonds, guavas, apples, dried dates, pistachios, and what are called watermelons.

There are many more kinds of fruits and sweets of all six tastes. Sūrdās says: the Lord takes His morning meal, and wise Śyāma is delighted.

...Nanda stood, but through the other door. He feared that Bābā might catch Him and delay His play. A short distance away He saw His friends Aṁśa, Śrīdāma, Subala, Arjuna, and others approaching. He at once ran toward them and joined the band of children.

The lord of Vraja now remembered that his service to the śālagrāma had been delayed for more than a ghaṭī. All that time he had been absorbed in watching his son awaken and eat. "Oh, such neglect of my chosen Lord's service because of attachment to my child, such carelessness on my part!" Distressed, he hurried toward Nārāyaṇa's temple and concentrated upon worship:

English translation

Holding flowers with eyes half closed, the lord of Vraja prayed: "O Lord, since my son's birth I have not worshiped You for even one day with my mind absorbed in You. I clearly feel my attachment to this child increasing every moment. Once You always sat upon the throne of my heart, and Your enchanting form remained continually before my eyes. Now I rarely remember You at all, and when I do, it is only so that You may prevent misfortune from befalling this child. This child has filled my eyes, ears, life, mind, intelligence, and very self. I cannot forget him for even a moment. Long habit makes my body and voice carry out the ritual of worship, and the external act is completed, but, my Lord, even while I worship, this child alone fills my mind. This mockery of devotion, my Master, with what face can I say that You..."

His throat choked. Placing the flowers upon the throne of the śālagrāma deity, he began the worship with mantras from the Puruṣa-sūkta:

At that very moment, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra entered Nārāyaṇa's temple from His play, a gentle smile upon His lips, and began watching His father's worship of the śālagrāma:

English translation

"Nārāyaṇa! Nārāyaṇa! My innocent son is committing a grave offense in service." The lord of Vraja shuddered at Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's words, and the queen also became frightened. She stepped forward and gently placed a finger upon Nīlamaṇi's crimson lips so He could say no more. Yaśodā had followed as soon as He and His noisy friends started toward the temple, fearing that her restless Nīlamaṇi might disturb His father's worship. Though He had performed many playful antics along the way, He grew quiet near the temple, as did the other children. They peered in from outside, while Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra entered, and Mother followed immediately. Until now she had not intervened, for He had stood with great restraint watching the worship.

When Mother suddenly stopped Him and His father's expression changed, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra refrained from speaking further. Yet He did not understand why she had silenced Him or why Bābā trembled at His words. He looked from Mother to Bābā with utterly innocent eyes, as though seeking the mystery. The lord of Vraja's attention was drawn to his son's guileless face and steady gaze. At once hundreds of streams of affection burst within him, carrying away his mind, life, intelligence, body, and senses. Still holding the ārati tray, he forgot himself for several moments. The queen of Vraja entered the same state:

"Before individual creation, Brahmā praised Him, and Indra perceived Him pervading all directions. One who knows that Supreme in this way becomes immortal, liberated, in this very life. There is no other path to liberation and attainment of the Lord. Obeisance to Nārāyaṇa. I offer Him this circumambulation." Completing the circumambulation, he filled his joined hands with many flowers and prepared to offer them. His eyes were closed, and the queen's eyes also closed under a surge of devotion.

At that moment Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra quietly stepped forward, swiftly lifted the śālagrāma from its throne, placed it in His mouth, and returned to His place exactly as before. Mother had no idea what Nīlamaṇi had done, and how could the lord of Vraja know when he was absorbed in samādhi upon his chosen deity? Nanda had just prayed: "Lord, one desire remains deep within me. It does not fade but grows more intense every moment: may this son of mine live forever, remain happy for endless time, and never be touched even by the shadow of sorrow. My Lord, this is possible only if I surrender him at Your feet. He is exceedingly restless and commits many offenses. Just now he offended You. O compassionate one, forgive him. Wish-fulfilling tree of Your devotees' desires, let Your form arise in my meditation for a moment as before. Let every particle of me be drenched by one drop from the stream of nectar flowing from Your lotus-petal eyes. Then let me place my son beneath the shade of Your supremely cool and peaceful lotus feet and become entirely free of worry." As his prayer ended, the form of his chosen Lord appeared upon the lotus of his heart.

Jeweled makara earrings sway, and their rays play upon His noble cheeks, which seem alternately to swallow and release their beauty. His finely shaped nose resembles a parrot's beak, quivering like a lotus opening in a lively breeze.

Beauty drips in crimson color from His perfect lips, grieving the bandhūka flower, bimba fruit, and coral. His divine row of teeth flashes brilliantly, like masses of kunda flowers or gathered thunderbolt rays.

His soft gentle smile is a wave of exultation, revealing the furthest shore of the ocean of bliss. His lovely chin makes the eyes halt in a flood so deep that no one can draw them out.

His graceful conch-like neck bears the generous radiance of the Kaustubha. Upon His auspicious chest shines the pleasing mark of Bhṛgu's foot, adorned with necklaces of jewels, budding jasmine, and pearls.

Four beautiful arms bear four emblems: conch, lotus, mace, and discus. His long arms reach His knees and wear jeweled armlets; all glory to His broad, raised shoulders.

His lotus hands and petal-like nails steal the heart, while paired golden bracelets display wondrous beauty. The line of hair above His lovely navel seems a young coiled serpent descending into a pool of nectar.

Abandoning all pride, the mind dissolves into the three folds at His waist, where new beauty begins at every moment. His sacred thread gleams, defeating the beauty of lightning against a dense dark cloud.

His yellow silk and matchless yellow lower garment make gold itself appear ugly. Jeweled girdle bells hang at His waist and sound like a graceful line of swans.

His full calves radiate pale light, and His delicate ankles seem slender, soft, and submissive beneath them. His lotus-bud feet remove sorrow, while His flawless toenails are moons spreading moonlight.

All glory to the soles of His feet, marked with the banner, thunderbolt, mace, barleycorn, and other signs. From those feet issued the celestial Gaṅgā, destroying the three torments, curses, and sins.

Śeṣa, Sanaka, and the other sages worship those feet. They bring joy to the Vedas, Sarasvatī, and Nārada and are the treasure of Brahmā's and Śiva's meditation. How can the small-minded Gumāna describe them?

A vast golden crown rests upon His beautiful head, set with many jewels whose light seems to gather the radiance of millions upon millions of suns. A musk dot adorns His lovely brow and makes the beauty of a bee seated upon a lotus petal seem insignificant. His brows resemble young bees arranged in rows to build their dwelling beside the newly opened white lotus beauty of His eyes. Smooth, black curling locks lie scattered on both sides of His lotus face, saturated with divine fragrance. Jeweled makara earrings sway at His ears, their reflections playing upon His rose-colored cheeks. The image appears and disappears, as though those crimson cheeks alternately swallow and release the earrings' beauty.

His nostrils are graceful like a parrot's beak and tremble with His breath, like a lotus shimmering and opening beneath the force of the breeze. Beauty pours from His crimson lips, making the bandhūka, bimba fruit, and coral lament that their redness is not its equal. His divine teeth gleam beautifully, like kunda blossoms or lightning rays of Indra's thunderbolt gathered into a single row. His soft gentle smile is a wave of blissful exhilaration, as though the ocean of joy had surged to its furthest limit. His chin is so lovely that the eyes cannot turn away. They sink into the flood of its beauty and plunge so deep that no one has the strength to draw them out.

His conch-like neck is exquisitely graceful and illumined by the clear rays of the Kaustubha. Upon His lovely chest appears the auspicious mark of Bhṛgu's foot, amid necklaces of jewels, budding jasmine, and pearls. His four beautiful arms bear the conch, mace, discus, and lotus. Long enough to reach His knees, they are adorned with armlets. All glory to His broad, raised shoulders. His open lotus palms and rows of petal-like nails steal the mind, while golden bracelets display wondrous beauty.

The lovely hollow of His navel and the line of hair above it seem like a pool of nectar into which a young serpent descends to drink. O mind, behold the beauty of the three folds upon Śrī Hari's abdomen! The mind abandons all guile and dissolves into them, where new beauty spreads at every moment. The sacred thread glitters upon His dark body, surpassing a dense cloud joined with lightning. What can compare with His yellow upper cloth and lower garment? Gold looks utterly formless beside them. Strings of jeweled girdle bells hang at His waist and sound like a charming row of calling swans.

His full calves seem vowed to scatter light, while His delicate ankles are slender, tender, and slightly trembling, as though declaring their humble submission beneath those calves. Behold His feet, beautiful like lotus buds and destroyers of every dual sorrow. Their ten nails are ten moons spreading immaculate moonlight. All glory to the soles of Śrī Hari's feet, marked with the banner, thunderbolt, mace, barleycorn, and other signs. From them issued the celestial Gaṅgā, destroying threefold suffering, freeing from curses, and shattering sin. Śeṣa, Sanaka, and the other sages ceaselessly worship those feet. They are a fountain of joy for the Vedas, Sarasvatī, and the divine sage Nārada, and the treasure contemplated by Brahmā and Śiva. All glory to the feet of Hari!

The lord of Vraja thrilled as this cherished form of his chosen Lord suddenly appeared in meditation. Yet as he contemplated it, he began to feel that the form stood precisely where his son was beside the queen of Vraja. No, it seemed inscribed upon his son's very limbs. At the same time he felt as though someone within the deepest chamber of his heart laughed and spoke in a honeyed voice: "Lord of the cowherds, you came to place your son at the feet of your chosen Lord, but your son has placed that very Lord within His mouth. Open your eyes and see!" At that very instant...

...the lord of Vraja's eyes opened and he looked toward the throne. His chosen deity was not there. "Queen of Vraja! Queen of Vraja! What has happened to the Lord?" he cried. Yaśodā had been praying with closed eyes, begging the śālagrāma for Nīlamaṇi's welfare. Hearing Nanda's anxious call, she opened her eyes and looked around. The couple's gaze was suddenly drawn to Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's bulging cheeks. "What? Could Śrī Kṛṣṇa have...?" The king of Vraja rose and approached Him. Yaśodā also feared that Nīlamaṇi might have lifted the śālagrāma and placed it in His mouth. What a terrible calamity that would be.

Mother took Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's chin in her hand, raised it slightly, and looked. Her suspicion only deepened. "Nīlamaṇi, my darling, open Your mouth and show me," she coaxed. The lord of Vraja was already certain. He held his right hand near Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's lips, fearing that the frightened child might spit out the śālagrāma and let it fall upon the ground. If his hand were there, it would land safely in his palm. But Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra neither spat it out nor spoke. He only looked at Bābā. Distraught, the lord of Vraja prayed: "Lord of the universe, protect us. This innocent child has committed an unforgivable offense, and I shall perform the atonement. Your own forms, the sun, fire, sky, wind, senses, moon, twilight, night, day, directions, water, earth, time, and dharma, witness every action of embodied beings:

"Śrī Hari's world-bewildering māyā is His smile, and this endless creation is the casting of that māyā's sidelong glance." It was as though Yogamāyā herself, expert in accomplishing the impossible, laughed from behind Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's bimba-like lips to demonstrate this statement to the lord of Vraja. She seemed to say: "Do not worry. No one has the power to harm your son. The sun, fire, sky, wind, and all the witnesses of action are within His mouth."

And so it was. In Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's laughing mouth, the lord of Vraja saw the śālagrāma. With His tiny fingers, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra removed it and placed it in Bābā's hand. On one side his chosen Lord had come into his hand, and on the other an astonishing sight appeared within his son's mouth. "What is this? What strangeness, what supreme wonder! Within my son's mouth the three worlds, the entire universe, are plainly present!" The lord of Vraja stood stunned, his voice choked and unable to speak:

Queen Yaśodā did not know that the king of Vraja was beholding such a revelation. She saw only that he had become grave and was staring wide-eyed at her Nīlamaṇi. She thought he was somewhat distressed by the disrespect shown to his chosen deity. To dispel the gravity of the moment, she said, "Lord of Vraja, do not delay. Quickly bathe Him in pure water and restore Him to the throne." Her words did not reach his ears. Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra tugged Mother's veil and laughed once more. It was the same laughter from which the lord of Vraja's experience of the universe had just emerged, but this time it came not to bestow a new experience, but to gather that experience back. In a moment, the lord of Vraja completely forgot the cosmic vision. Even the idea that Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra possessed anything extraordinary vanished entirely from his memory.

The Puruṣa has thousands of heads, thousands of eyes, and thousands of feet. Enveloping the earth on every side, He extends ten fingers beyond it.

Such is His greatness, yet the Puruṣa is greater still. All beings are one quarter of Him, while His three immortal quarters remain in the divine realm.

The three-quartered Puruṣa rose above, while one quarter became this world again. From there He spread in every direction into that which eats and that which does not eat.

From Him Virāṭ was born, and from Virāṭ the indwelling Puruṣa. Once born, He extended beyond the earth, behind and before.

"That Supreme Self has thousands, indeed infinitely many, heads; thousands of immeasurable eyes and other faculties of knowledge; and thousands of countless feet and other faculties of action. He dwells within all. He pervades the ground of every universe from every side, yet extends ten fingers beyond it. Though all-pervading within the cosmos, He also transcends it. The entire universe related to past, present, and future is the glory of this Puruṣa, the expansion of the Supreme's powers. Yet His nature is not exhausted by this. He is vastly greater than the cosmic Virāṭ.

"The three worlds within manifestation occupy only one of His quarters and end within that fourth part, while three quarters remain. This three-quartered nature is immortal and imperishable, abiding in its own essential state. The three-quartered Puruṣa is raised above, entirely distinct from the world born of ignorance and untouched by worldly virtue and fault. Only one portion came into contact with māyā and arose here as the universe. He then expanded as the manifold creation of conscious and insentient things and pervaded every direction.

"From that original Supreme Person the cosmic egg arose, and within it appeared the conscious Puruṣa who identifies with it. In truth, the Supreme created the cosmic egg and entered it Himself as the living being. That being became the presiding deity of the cosmos. The same Virāṭ Puruṣa then appeared in many forms, as gods, animals, humans, and others. Thereafter He produced the earth and then fashioned the bodies of living beings."

"The Supreme Self, the original Person at whose feet you offered worship while reciting these mantras, is this very son of yours." Yet where was there room for such truth in the lord of Vraja's heart, softened by paternal love? Yogamāyā had inserted a painted curtain of divine majesty only to produce a momentary change of feeling within his mind, stir the ocean of paternal love eternally flowing through his heart, and regulate the sequence of the līlā. She already knew that the lord of Vraja had no need of such majesty and would never accept it.

Be that as it may, the lord of Vraja bathed the śālagrāma again, adorned Him as before, and restored Him to the throne.
