Nectar arose from the churning of the Ocean of Milk, and the hosts of immortals drank it and were satisfied. Yet that nectar did not possess the wholly incomparable flavor found in the ambrosia of the queen of Vraja's breast milk. Thus, although He has drunk Mother's milk since beginningless time, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, existence, consciousness, and bliss, the complete Absolute, abode of infinite majesty and Lord Himself, has never felt, "Enough." His desire to drink this nectar only increases, and even continuous nursing cannot satisfy Him.
Today He sits upon Queen Yaśodā's lap, relishing the nectar of parental love flowing from her breast. Holding its tip between His rosy lips and grasping it with both tender lotus hands, He nurses eagerly with a soft humming sound, yet is not satisfied. The more He drinks, the more His hunger grows. For every measure of milk that flows, a desire to drink a thousandfold greater quantity seems to surge within His heart. Seeing this, the queen's stream of parental love becomes infinitely multiplied and flows as milk. His longing to nurse then increases again. Thus her desire to feed Him and His desire to drink compete with one another, as though both were racing toward infinity.

The inconceivable great power of līlā now wished to arrange what came next. Leaving the līlā of feeding and nursing unfinished, she went ahead and intensified the fire beneath the milk Queen Yaśodā was boiling for her sapphire. The suddenly heightened flame caused the milk to rise. The queen of Vraja was absorbed in nursing her son and beholding His smiling moonlike face with its scattered curls. Then, as though someone had forcibly broken her absorption and turned her gaze, Mother's eyes suddenly fell upon the rising milk:

English translation
In less than the blink of an eye, Mother drew her breast from Nīlamaṇi's mouth, suddenly set Him upon the floor, and ran toward the milk. This was not because she loved it more than Him. She feared that if it boiled over into the fire, she could not feed her sapphire the supremely delicious milk of the lotus-fragrant cows that day. Pure love gladly renounces even the happiness gained through union with the beloved in order to bring happiness to that beloved.
No material mind can imagine the joy Queen Yaśodā, embodiment of condensed parental love, receives from Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's touch. Countless great yogīs and sages perform austerities for thousands of years and, attaining the bliss of His touch in meditation for only a moment, remain intoxicated with joy forever. What ocean of supreme bliss must engulf the queen of Vraja as she holds Him directly to her breast and nurses Him? No inert mind or intellect can measure it. Yet for Nīlamaṇi's happiness, Mother renounces even this incomparable joy.
She believes, "This lotus-fragrant milk possesses greater life-giving power than my own and is far sweeter. Drinking it will nourish my sapphire's limbs and satisfy Him more fully, yet it is boiling away and being lost." How could Mother bear that? His satisfaction and welfare are far more precious to her than her own joy. If surrendering her happiness can satisfy Him, protect Him, or offer even the possibility of His joy, she is always ready. She need not form such a thought, for it is her eternal nature. As soon as the opportunity arises, love's nature appears in her actions. Thus she left Nīlamaṇi to protect the milk. So be it.

But why would this satisfy Him? He was hurt that Mother had left Him hungry and unsatisfied and had not taken Him along. His hurt became anger. His rosy lips quivered, tears filled His eyes, and His brows curved more sharply. Biting His lower lip, He looked about indignantly. Seeing Mother occupied with the milk beside the hearth, His anger increased. He grasped the churning vessel and tried to overturn it, but He lacked the strength to move the yogurt-filled pot Yaśodā had set in place.
Grinding His teeth, He looked behind Him and saw a stone pestle nearby. He seized it, approached the vessel, and checked once more whether Mother was looking. She remained absorbed in tending the milk. His patience ended. He struck the vessel's upper part with the pestle. It rang, but did not break. His anger weakened as He wondered whether Mother had heard. He looked at her fearfully, but she remained occupied. His fear vanished and His anger doubled. With far greater force He struck the vessel near its base. A hole opened, a stream of yogurt flowed out, and Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's delight knew no bounds.

The child who revels in infant līlā knew it was no longer safe to remain. It was as though the guardian spirit of Nanda's palace whispered, "Yaśodā's sapphire, this vessel has been preserved since the time of your grandmother Varīyasī. Breaking it is an unforgivable offense. Mother will surely punish You, so hurry away and hide." As though directed, He fled across the veranda, concealed Himself behind the pillars, and softly approached the butter store. Its front door stood unlatched. What better hiding place could there be?
He entered, closed that door behind Him, and opened the door leading toward the garden. The store was filled with fresh butter, with countless butter-filled vessels arranged upon hanging racks. This butter was kept especially pure for offerings to Śrī Nārāyaṇa, the chosen Lord of the king of Vraja, and for honoring guests. Gaining sole dominion over such a store, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra became immersed in joy. He had often played freely in the gopīs' storerooms, but this was His first opportunity to enter His own, and He could not contain His delight.
Only after all this did the queen of Vraja finish tending the milk. She removed it from the fire and returned to the churning place, where she saw the broken yogurt vessel and the entire veranda flooded with yogurt. She immediately understood that her sapphire, angered because she had interrupted His nursing, had cleverly broken the pot without her hearing and fled. Understanding everything, she burst into laughter:

Then Mother wondered where her sapphire had gone, and her heart began to pound. Suddenly she saw the marks of His feet impressed upon the streams of yogurt, silently signaling, "Mother, follow us and you will find your sapphire." Only through them could she locate Him in the vast palace. The prints were clear in the yogurt and remained faintly visible farther on because His soles were smeared with it. They led to the butter store and vanished.
The queen understood that Nīlamaṇi must be hiding there. Touching her head with her palm, she worried, "By now this innocent child must have contaminated all the butter reserved for Nārāyaṇa's offering!"

Peering through a gap in the door, Mother saw her sapphire standing upon an overturned mortar. Hundreds and thousands of monkeys sat at the garden door and in the courtyard beyond. Nīlamaṇi took butter from the hanging racks and freely gave it to them, occasionally eating a little Himself and distributing the rest. He also glanced around suspiciously, wondering whether Mother might discover His theft.
Beholding this incomparable sight, the queen thought, "Until today I heard such things from the cowherd women but did not believe them, thinking they invented the stories. Now I see His conduct directly. He has truly become exceedingly restless. I must discipline Him, or He will grow uncontrollable." She picked up the slender golden rod used while carrying Him and slowly approached from behind to catch Him:

One obstacle remained. Yaśodā's slender waist, burdened by her broad hips, could not sustain such speed. By the time she reached the assembly hall, her pace slowed, her hair loosened, its flowers fell along the path, and every limb grew weary. Finding no one in the hall, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra turned toward a thorn-filled garden. Mother became distraught: "If He runs alone into that forest, His tender limbs will be pierced by thorns! Nārāyaṇa! Nārāyaṇa!"
Her eyes closed for a moment, and His movement stopped. His gaze turned from the forest toward her. His power of grace looked out through the veil of His infant mood and saw her pitiful condition. It drew her exhausted body from ten cubits away to within ten fingers of Him. Suddenly finding herself close, Mother rejoiced and sprang forward, placing both hands upon His shoulders from behind:

The string of pearls woven through her pure locks broke apart. Drops of perspiration beautified her face as loosened flowers scattered.

Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra had offended Mother, who held one hand and led Him toward the house. He wept as tears washed the collyrium from His eyes over His cheeks. Pausing, He wiped them with His free hand and repeatedly raised His frightened eyes to Mother's face. She seemed without compassion, lifting the golden rod as though ready to strike His tender limbs. "My Mother, I shall never do this again," He cried anxiously, but she continued to rebuke Him.
"Restless-minded child! Angry one! Greedy one! Friend of monkeys! Plunderer of homes! You have gone through Gokula creating disturbances in the cowherd women's houses. Today I shall punish all those offenses. Tell me where your toys are. Bring them all to me. I shall take every one of them, and then look at this rod!" Thus Mother frightened Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, remover of the universe's fear, who frightens even Yama:

Mother saw that Nīlamaṇi had taken her threats as real and become terribly frightened. Pain pierced the embodiment of parental love, and she longed to clasp Him to her breast, bathe Him in hundreds of thousands of kisses, and wipe His tears. At that moment the power of līlā filled her heart with discernment suited to the līlā: "No, Queen Nanda, do not do that. Your anger is not truly directed toward Nīlamaṇi. You only enact it for His welfare so that He will not become unrestrained. Be patient a little longer.
"You have never disciplined Him before, and in the future you will never again be able to hold a harsh feeling toward Him even for a moment. This is the first and last līlā of discipline in His life. It will benefit Him and increase His boundless fame. If you abandon patience now, how will His conduct improve? Hide and endure your pain a little longer. Let the līlā of discipline be completed. Afterward bathe, dry, and cherish Him with the affection of millions of lives." Queen Yaśodā was caught between these impulses.

Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's fear-filled eyes now became utterly unbearable even to Queen Yaśodā, and she cast the golden rod from her hand far away. Having thrown it aside, she thought, "I shall bind Nīlamaṇi for a little while. Fear of being bound will keep Him from making such mischief again, and I too will be free from worry for a short time. Today I must personally make all the arrangements for Śrī Nārāyaṇa's service by myself. Upananda's wife will certainly not let Sister Rohiṇī return here without feeding her, so she will be unable to come before midday. I must perform all the household duties myself. Nīlamaṇi is exceedingly angry with me within His heart. If I become occupied with the housework and He goes away in resentment and hides somewhere, finding Him again will be difficult. Therefore, the best course is to bind Him."
Thinking in this way, Queen Yaśodā resolved within her heart to bind Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra. Mother did not know whom she was truly contemplating bringing into bondage. She was unacquainted with Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's infinite and unequalled majesty. To her, Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra was simply the child born from her womb. It is a mother's duty to discipline her son, and she was only going to fulfill that duty. Because her son had become exceedingly frightened on seeing the rod, she had thrown it away. Yet discipline was necessary, so she was considering binding Him:

Yaśodā, look toward your son. Why such harsh anger toward this tender child, the very abode of sweetness?
The yogurt thief gazes at your face again and again with His own face lowered, like a night lotus closing when touched by the sun's rays at dawn.
His exceedingly restless eyes tremble with fear, their lovely corners wet with tears, like fish pierced by a hook and thrashing the water.
The heavy drops falling upon His chest create wondrous beauty, like a necklace of pearls scattering over His lovely heart when its thread breaks.
Nanda's son, worshiped by the world, wipes the tears from the corners of His eyes. Servant Sūraj says: for my delight, behold Nanda's child.
