English translation

When Śrī Kṛṣṇa churned Kāliya Lake down to its depths, Kāliya angrily emerged, bit Śrī Kṛṣṇa repeatedly on several limbs, and finally coiled himself around the Lord's entire body; seeing this, the cowherds and cowherd boys standing on the bank fainted and fell to the ground.

Even that loving rebuke from the serpent wives had no effect upon Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra. Instead, laughing all the while, he began scattering water with his restless lotus hands. In the blink of an eye he rose to the surface of the lake and, as though preparing to swim, extended his arms and slapped the water. Then his dark body began ranging everywhere through that vast lake. He moved wherever he pleased. His sport in the water began like that of an intoxicated lordly elephant. The movements of his arms and feet churned the water violently. Countless whirlpools appeared at once; the water at the bottom surged upward, while the upper currents swept down toward the depths. Thousands of streams that threw Kāliya's dwelling into disorder collided above and below. Caught in their force, the serpents' abode seemed to overturn on every side, and Kāliya's serpent kinsmen became half dead. Yet for Vrajendra's son, the enjoyer of divine play, this was sport. By striking the water again and again, he made it resound like a musical instrument. Within Kāliya's sleeping chamber, however, that sound manifested like a terrible thunderbolt and seemed to split everyone's ears.

Suddenly a rising whirlpool struck the sleeping Kāliya with such tremendous force that it nearly hurled him completely outside. The jolt opened his dreadful eyes, and at that very moment the terrifying thunderous sound filled the openings of his ears. His eyes were now open, and the sound of the beaten water entered through that path as well. Yet he could not determine why or how this storm within the water had arisen. Overwhelmed by many fears, he became agitated. “Has Garuḍa come? No, he cannot come here. It is impossible for him to transgress Saubhari's curse. Then only someone even more powerful than Garuḍa could dare to enter this place. But who could that be?” Kāliya's life-breath grew restless with these thoughts, and anger began filling his mind. He could plainly see: “This agitation is about to tear the entire serpents' dwelling apart. It is unbearable. Who knows what consequence even a moment's delay might bring?” Thus impatient, Kāliya finally left the cavern of his dwelling and emerged. Upon reaching the surface of the lake, he spread his hoods, and then his terrible gaze fell upon his opponent. At once he lunged toward him.

The poisoned water surged in terrible waves, and within it Kṛṣṇa played in many ways.

The blows of Hari's mighty arms made the water roar, as though a proud elephant sported there in fury.

The serpent king heard the tumult within his dwelling and could not endure its humiliation.

That wicked and spiteful serpent rushed forth in anger and swiftly came close beside Kṛṣṇa.

But then he thought, “Why, this is only a child! A cascade of beauty pours from his limbs. How tender he is, bringing such delight to the eyes! The dark hue of a fresh raincloud fills the radiance of his body, and that blue splendor is reflected in the waves of the lake. The entire lake shines with his dark effulgence. Where has its fiery poison gone? Nectar now spreads everywhere, and a current of bliss flows from the child's limbs. A yellow garment adorns the waist of his dark body. How beautiful upon his broad chest are the fine, golden hairs that curl to the right, the mark of Śrīvatsa, and the yellow upper cloth that clings beside Śrīvatsa in the force of his rapid swimming. How beautiful is his lotus face, joined with a gentle smile. How much softer than a lotus bud are his crimson feet!”

For a moment Kāliya stood as though astonished. His forward movement almost stopped. Yet auspicious feelings cannot remain steady within a heart filled with demonic qualities. When such a cause appears, the inherent power of the divine object kindles a brilliance like a streak of lightning, and the heart is illumined by the light of truth. Soon, however, a dense covering of darkness envelops the heart just as before, and the creature again drifts within the current of material nature. This was Kāliya's condition. Through the inconceivable prompting of the power of divine play, an exceedingly tiny opening appeared for a moment within the serpent's darkened heart, and a ray of the Dark Beauty's incomparable loveliness shimmered through it. But Kāliya closed that opening once more. The result had to accord with the nature of the vessel, and so it did. Kāliya saw: “Even after all I have done, there is not the slightest fear in the child's eyes. Utterly fearless, he remains absorbed in his exuberant sport.” This poured an offering into Kāliya's rage, and the fire of his anger blazed fiercely. All his hoods rose of themselves. His burning breath darkened the lake, a stream of life-destroying venom flowed from his mouth, and in this dreadful form he charged to bite Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra. He did not know toward whom he was going or whom he intended to reduce to ashes. How could he possibly know?

And so, the enjoyer of childhood play fled as soon as he saw Kāliya. He did not run from fear, but to provoke the serpent still further. Turning left and right, laughing and striking the water, he sped away, while Kāliya raced behind him with all his strength. At every step the serpent seemed about to touch him, yet the Dark Beauty escaped again, preserving a distance no wider than a sesame seed. Countless lords of yoga and sages, whose minds perfected in samādhi have been purified through ages of spiritual exertion, yearn to behold Vrajendra's son Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra for even a moment. Yet Kāliya was visibly racing after that very Lord in order to bite him. What an astonishing event! All glory to the grace bestowed by the enjoyer of childhood play.

And look there, even that vile creature received the fortune of touching the Lord's lotus feet. This was not so that he might offer his life forever at those crimson lotus feet, but so that he might sink his venomous fangs into them. How wondrous is the design of the supreme power of divine play! The Dark Beauty laughed and repeatedly turned his curving glance toward Kāliya, as though he had grown weary, in this manner
