What is dear to me is dear to you, says Rasakhān—knowingly hide this from those who do not understand. Anxious gossip runs on every side; come, friend, keep walking until it has exhausted its anger. If the heart desires Him, seek Him with your whole desire; for love’s work, what should not be done? Let your mother-in-law grow angry and let Nanda receive the blame; only give me your hand and lend your ear to that melody.

From the day mind-enchanting Mohana came through your lanes singing to the cattle, what story have the people of Vraja not spread, rolling their eyes as they tell it? If He is even slightly pleased, says Rasakhān, why does He not adorn Himself and delight you in return? Mad girl, if the stain is already upon you, why not cast off fear and enter His embrace?

No companion should go to fetch Yamunā water: Nanda’s darling stands blocking the road. Rolling His eyes and casting glances, says Rasakhān, He hurls the spear of love. I, enemy to myself, went outside; see what He made of me—my necklace broke. Was it Holī, or was I stolen by Hari? The garland of Vraja is steeped crimson in gulāla.

Beloved and beloved wander steeped in affection; loose ends of her veil scatter and fly. Fresh youth trembles; Love’s color enters the lovely depths of their sidelong glances. Rivers of nectar overflow, says Rasakhān, and their waves sweep away whole families of women. They torment those burning in separation, while the darling Girl and darling Boy wear those waves like garments.

That clever young girl lay against her Beloved’s breast, rejoicing in immense delight. Her loosened hair spilled, streamed, and flew; beholding its beauty, the Love-god abandoned all pride. Steeped in that nectar, says Rasakhān, she remained awake through love’s night—her eyes tell the tale. Upon a moon were two red fruits, upon the fruits two night-lotuses, and upon the lotuses strings of pearls.

Joining limb to limb, the two remained entwined beneath the shelter of a tree, says Rasakhān. Together, steeped in Love’s brilliant color, the Beloved placed His arm around her neck. With words sharp as Love’s arrows, in the very heart of affection, they plundered the treasury of delight. He grasps the knot of her dress and the golden vessels of her breasts; the woman says, ‘Beloved, no—no!’

Today, suddenly, I met Rādhikā, treasury of beauty, within the forest. The instant their glances fell, says Rasakhān, they met, filled one another’s embrace, and linked arms around necks. Words steeped in love came from both sides, each touching the other exactly where desired. The spell of enchantment and instrument of subjugation prevailed: neither Beloved nor beloved could say no.

The lovely Girl lay upon the couch with the charming Boy held full within her arms. Suddenly uneasy, she startled awake and tried in fear to tear herself from His embrace. Every flower blooms in forest and garden, and peacocks call at the coming of spring. Hearing the cuckoo’s cry, all lovers hurry home from distant lands. Hear of separation’s heat, Rasakhān: the woman’s body has lost all its great radiance. Her lotus face has withered; hot, clinging breaths rise from her heart. Separation from Gokula’s Lord fell like cosmic dissolution upon the gopīs, Nanda, and revered Yaśodā. A current of tears swept on until all three worlds of Vraja seemed drowned beneath its waters.
