Fresh editorial translation from the Rasakhān Granthāvalī authority

Today, just as I was going to sell curds, Mohana came and stopped me on the road. He demanded a toll, drew me close, and shamelessly plundered the treasure of my youth. How can I tell all my distress? Rasakhān says He took it away laughing and smiling. I was caught alone in His enclosure, friend; the darling stole my modesty and did whatever pleased His heart.

First she took her curds to Gokula; after four steps she came upon that master actor. He worked the power of Love upon her, says Rasakhān, standing in the way and crying, ‘Pay the toll! Pay the toll!’ Wrapped from head to foot in a dark-blue veil, friend, she trembled in every way. She was like lightning trapped inside a monsoon cloud, unable to emerge and flashing only within.

You have lately become a toll collector and demand payment—but if Kaṃsa hears, You will not escape his bonds. You stop me in the forest and stretch out Your hand, says Rasakhān; You will bring immense trouble upon Yourself. If calves stray and the other cattle scatter, all Your wealth will be lost. And if You seize some woman’s ornament, darling, You will not be sold cheaply enough to pay its price.

If You want milk, why seize my garment? Come, take it—how much milk could You possibly drink? On the pretext of tasting, You ask for butter; eat it—how much butter could You consume? I know what is in Your heart, says Rasakhān, so why prolong this argument? If under cover of milk-products You desire another sweetness, Kānhajū, You will not receive even a drop.

That insolent charmer blocks the roads of Gokula, with His companions close beside Him. He glares at anyone and everyone—who now will go and confront You? He tasted one woman’s butter, spilled another’s milk and curds, seized one woman’s garment and climbed upon it, and scattered another’s guñjā necklace. He pays no heed when forbidden, says Rasakhān; one would think the kingdom itself had come into His house. The women ask Yaśodā, ‘Did this boy go out to graze, or to order delicacies for Himself?’

The milk was drawn and set down hot; before it could be cultured, the starter that was added turned sour just where it stood. From the very moment He made those melodies heard, says Rasakhān, everyone’s hands and feet have belonged to someone else. Men and women alike, the young and the very young—what can one say? All Vraja has fallen into lament. Who can know whether Yaśodā’s boy went out to play the flute or to spread poison?

They do not fill their water-pots, do not set foot upon the road, do no work at home; they only sit and sigh. At a single hearing one rolled to the ground, another tossed and turned, and fire-like tears streamed from another’s eyes. Find some remedy: have the bamboo cut down, so no bamboo will grow and the flute will never sound again.
