What use, says Rasakhān, are pleasures and gathered riches? What use becoming a yogī and smearing ash over the body? What use practicing the five fires, sleeping amid water, or conquering kingdoms from one ocean to the other? Repeated japa, austerity, restraint, rigorous vows, and thousands of pilgrimages—why keep babbling of these? All are worthless if the heart has neither loved nor served at the court of Nanda’s son, if it has never longed to behold Him.

Eyes find no rest even in temples of gold, forever bright with rows of lamps and crimson rubies. How far can I describe such lordship, O king, with crowds of gatekeepers who never move from the door? Bathe in Mother Gaṅgā, scatter pearls in charity, recite the Vedas twenty times, and meditate with every discipline— what has a person gained, says Rasakhān, if the heart has not loved the Wearer of the yellow cloth?

One roams from pilgrimage to pilgrimage; another recites the Purāṇas a thousand times. One is absorbed in japa, another in austerity, while another remains fixed in perfected samādhi. Wake up and see, says Rasakhān: all these great fools have lost the way. True are those who have cast their very selves, without reserve, upon dark Gopāla.

Woman is the form of deception and uncertainty, increasing delight through playful arts. Nothing is truly in your hands, Rasakhān—why wander bewildered, drinking desire like poison? Those breasts are not golden pitchers, but merely knots of flesh and skin. Those are not the braids of a doe-eyed beauty, but a ladder laid against the house of Yama.

Peacock feathers became His wedding crown: today, friend, Nanda’s son is the bridegroom. Lovely Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter became the bride; Fate itself has joined this pair, the fountain of all joy. Nothing more can be said, says Rasakhān—the two are bound in the snares of beauty and love. All who behold Them attain every happiness: these two are Vraja’s very life and the destroyers of sorrow.

Yaśodā called to Him, and Hari wandered after the cow, patting at her udder in innocent confusion. Trying to find His way, He took four little steps, grew restless, and tumbled in the dust, soiling His silks. Seeing Him, Rasakhān laughed as Yaśodā lifted Him to her breast and swept the loose curls from His forehead. At that sight, joy could no longer be contained within blissful Nanda’s courtyard or within his limbs.

At dawn today I went, says Rasakhān, and remained awhile in Nanda’s house. May Yaśodā’s life extend for millions of ages; the happiness I saw cannot be told. She placed necklaces upon His breast, gazed and gazed, offered blessings, and fondled her little child.

Mind-enchanting Mohana returns from the forest, shining among the cows and cowherd boys of Vraja. He plays the flute and fearlessly sings; surely He intends some fresh mischief here.
