You come greedy for nectar, though what do You know of what true nectar is? Let our bodies be drenched in that sweetness just a little, carefree darling of ten bright days. In the end the day will circle back when You, friend, will roam in the company of cowherd women alone. What will You gain from such talk? Go home now, darling—You are still only a boy.

You have come newly to Vraja today, and would start a quarrel merely by rolling your eyes. You think you can trick us, but if we go to sell curds You will not even learn where. Settle everything you owe us, says Rasakhān, though afterward You may regret it inwardly. If you are the daughter of a great house, why grow proud? You shall not pass without paying the toll.

Hearing these words and turning them within her heart, Vṛṣabhānu’s darling spoke up: ‘Kānh, have You become ignorant—demanding a toll in the forest and blocking the lane? You come into my road and grow angry, though not one word You have spoken is proper. I am the daughter of Vṛṣabhānu’s town, and I am going to sell my milk-products.’

‘Ah, if you are from Vṛṣabhānu’s town, then you certainly cannot pass without paying the toll. If you give curds and butter to taste, you may wander this road a hundred thousand times. Otherwise I shall take whatever sweetness there is, and you will not go again to sell your milk-products. Woman, you needlessly increase the quarrel; after giving abuse, you will receive it back yourself.’
