Miscellaneous Poems 1

You have devised such cleverness—why come out upon this lane? ‘Is the lane your father’s property? I came out here first of all. This path is for everyone to travel; why do you deceitfully block it?’ ‘Lord of Rasakhān, go peacefully, or I shall lodge a complaint at Nanda’s palace.’

‘You will earn abuse, ignorant boy! Who taught You such behavior—seizing another man’s wife? Go, go, drink Your milk-products. Who are You to block the road? Do not use such force; Mohana, I have taught You a hundred times.’ Angrily she struck and smashed the little pot, and streams of milk-product ran away like a drain. ‘Lord of Rasakhān, let me go today. I promise that tomorrow I shall come this same way.’

Friend, today He has come dressed in that same marvelous fashion, singing melodies that please you, accompanied by His graceful company. Pay no heed to mother-in-law or sister-in-law—rise and play Phāga. Make the eyes of your companions fruitful; fulfill the fortune of these eyes. When that enchanting melody first entered your ears, you abandoned family restraint even then. On this side Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter laughed proudly; on that, Rasakhān’s Lord laughed in reply.

Today is Holī, Mohana—Holī! Yesterday You came into our courtyard and showered abuse; who was that, then? Why sit far away beside Your mother now? Come out, wanderer of the bowers! All the women of Gokula have come surging with excitement, bearers of the earth’s entire wealth. When the lovely young Girl came out at their challenge, she was the very beloved of beauty’s nectar. She clasped dark Ghanaśyāma like lightning flashing again and again around a cloud. Give us the lampblack mixed in the color-pot; let every body join in the festive abuse. For one insult in this Holī play, says Rasakhān, I would offer a hundred honors in return.

How can I go out while Mohana plays Phāga? All my companions have gone, while love has openly revealed itself in me. One night I dreamed that Nanda’s son came and met me. Shyly I drew my veil, but He wrapped His arms around me. He gave me His nectar and drank mine in a single draught. Then the hostile eyelids opened; every hope I held broke apart. I struggled again and again to return, but sleep would not touch my eyes. Closing my eyelids, I held that vision for the length of one watch. From that day, the Holī pole had already been planted within me. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law went to watch, leaving me confined at home. My mother-in-law sighs, my sister-in-law stands furious, my husband angrily counts every step his younger brother takes. I stand upon the high roof and strain my eyes to the horizon. Night and day hope remains: when will the flute call? How can I make the mind patient? I rise in terrible anguish. This hard heart does not split, though it cannot contain even a sesame-seed of further pain. One longing fills my mind: abandon shame and family restraint, go and meet the Lord of Vraja, Love’s sovereign—the Lord of Rasakhān.
